Brent was smart. Even in the aftermath, he was careful to say nothing at all about Tony, and only complementary things about the organization. That'll get you a job down the road.

A number of teams had used this gambit, including Dallas actually signing a retired player to a partially guaranteed contract to make salaries work, but it was in the immediate aftermath of the Spurs use of this tactic that it was rendered null and void by the league.

Not sure it is what it looks like. I remember going through the media guide at one point and SSE had like 15 VPs? It may be that they bumped him into a VP slot to make it harder for someone to poach him away. A team would basically have to offer him full control of bball operations to offer him an upgrade and get automatic permission for an interview. Otherwise, they'd need the Spurs permission.

Well, to be fair, it was more than fan conjecture. Tony said that himself.
And as much tension as there likely is between them, Brent and Tony never let it come out in public. And I doubt Brent would let it get in the way of honoring one of the all-time greats when that time comes. Brent is a big boy.

This has the potential to be a coup. Similar to Kerr, his basketball IQ shone through as a broadcaster (he also had it in spades as a player, but they're not always one and the same). He's the type who came off as likely to be successful whether in the front office or in coaching.

Agree. That was the Spurs best chance at a threepeat...then The Foul happened. We still would have had to get past a loaded Minny team with Prime KG, Cassell, and Spree...but after that Dallas series, I think we would've gone all the way.

No Phoenix was in the WCF that year. The Mavs had to beat Phoenix with Nash to get to the NBA finals. That was Phoenix's best chance to ring and they blew it but I think Nash got injured.

I swear, that series with the Kings was their achilles heel. It was a physical hard fought series, and it exhausted them. The Kings really took them out of their element. The same thing happened in 08 with New Orleans, and then they lost the next series to the Lakers.

Actually wondering what this position accounts for in the FO hierarchy other than being ‘third-in-line” behind RC and Popovich.
If I had to take a stab it’s to run the behind the scenes, non player operation.. lots of staff positions listed in the Spurs press release.

Always enjoyed Bones when he was with the Spurs & when he was with NBA TV. He will be missed there, but he always seem to have a great BB IQ, & I'm sure that PATFO knows who they are getting. Heard someone say that Bones doesn't have FO experience, but hey, he has to start somewhere, & VPOBO, may be a great place to start. Hey, if Steve Kerr did it at Phoenix, why not Bones? I'm glad that PATO & the Spurs are hiring one of their own, and he's a good choice for this position. Once Pop decides to step down, will this mean that Bones will move into the role of POBO, or will Pop retain that role only? Hmmm... Time will tell... GSG!!!

2006
This was the last year the NBA seeded the three division champs 1-3.
Meaning the 63 win Spurs had to face the 60 win Mavericks in round two.
Denver had only 44 wins but got the 3rd seed for winning their division.
In today's formatting the Spurs would've gotten the winner of Memphis and Clippers in round two, while Dallas would've battled Nash's Suns in the semis.
I firmly believe 2006 San Antonio was their best team to not ring...better than 2013 even.
PS - this Dallas series was the one with the biased refereeing for the entire freaking series. The NBA did NOT want a repeat of 2005, which it should've been: Spurs Pistons II
And yes...as you can tell I'm still bitter about something that happened 12 years ago.

Good question 🤔
Big 3 plus Bruce, Horry, Brent, Finley
vs
Big 3 plus Kawhitter, Green, Mills, Neal, Tiago, Boris

I thought that too but you could argue, 2005 to 2007 was the only years where you can legit argue the Big 3 were at their primes. Duncan started off the year bad because of plantar but by playoff time he was a Beast. We also shipped in 2005 and 2007 so, 2006 probably was a championship caliber team as well. 2013 was Very good too.

I went back recently and watched all I could find of that series on YouTube. It was amazing how few calls the Spurs were actually getting from the refs in that series. Much different treatment than today’s Warriors receive. No respect for the dynasty in place at the time. You could tell powers that be were accepting the Spurs run through gritted teeth. Even Manu’s foul, though real, might have slipped by if that had been Durant on defense today. The league would have issued an apology for “missing” the call a few days later.

This is where I think the Spurs failed. You're right---Durant would have been given that call. The Warriors would have been treated more fairly. But, why didn't true Spurs ever try to become more marketable? More likeable? They prided themselves on being a boring team.,

:lol jesus fucking christ, you got me good with that one.
Seriously though, i always loved Brent. One of my fav Spurs from that era, dude was a playoff performer. I really hope it was just sexting and that Tony didn't actually feed Erin his french fry.
Erin was gorgeous, too.

It works both ways. If the Spurs had tried to become more marketable then whose to say Manu,Parker, and even Duncan's egos don't blow up. They might not have had same type of unity and chemistry that allowed them to stay together long term. I do believe a team like the Warriors will have chemistry problems once they are finally dethroned due to all the big egos they have.

You are exactly right with this. I'm not ready to let this fade out of my memory either. Most people don't know this anymore (or never did if they are newer fans). The NBA has been so manipulative over the years with ref bias/agenda and their endless new rules. It has cheapened the product greatly which sucks because this is my favorite sport and these are some of the best athletes in the world. Let them fucking play. Jesus.

What about Tim Duncan getting hacked on the last play of regulation? Am I remembering that as clearly as I think I am?

Yeah, Tim got the rebound on Manu’s miss right under the hoop. His putback hit the underside of the rim because his arm was being held down in the front, with Dirk’s elbow on top of Tim’s head from the back. 2 seconds left when he got the ball, point blank range, and he couldn’t shoot because he was being held down. Sad. :pctoss

I can already prepare for the flack I'm going to get posting this but I can understand when people have grown up with the bad habit of exclaiming "Jesus Christ" or "oh my God" or "Go* damn" and theyve done it whole life and are densensitized to it. Yall obviously arent Christian and dont care or realize that you're committing blasphemy (one of 10 commandments) each time u do it but when u actually take the time to type it out thats no accident. Non-believers wont care but for those of us who do its actually offensive and if yall at least consider yourselves"good" people try to avoid it knowing the majority of people do believe.
