You're grossly exaggerating; you're giving up picks for four years and are you really counting rentals like Rondo/KCP/Beasley towards that total? If you have Kawhi or KD saying they're coming then yeah, keep that capspace open because they're every bit as good as Davis. If not what, you're going to save that capspace to max out Boogie, Klay, or Butler? Also I don't think you're a bit off on the capspace argument. Even without taking the Solomon Hill contract the Lakers would have an extremely hard time opening a 30% max slot (Leonard) and would have absolutely no way to open a 35% max slot (Durant) after trading for Davis. That $5 million Luol Deng is owed really hurts them here. They'd be looking at around $26 million salary cap space if they just did the trade for Davis without Hill, and that would be with renouncing Zubac and letting him walk. That's not getting you Kawhi, KD, Boogie, Klay, Kemba, or Butler. Even if you do the trade while taking Hill though you're still looking at around $12.5 million capspace without renouncing Zubac, which would be enough to land a nice supporting player.
