Can we talk about the fact that Pop closed with his pet wombat over White?
In an elimination game. And had plays run for him so he could jack up low percentage threes.
If its close, you just know Wombat will be out there in the 4th Qtr of Game 7. If we need a three to keep the season alive guess who's getting a play drawn up for them? Wombat.
-
Re: Can we talk about the fact that Pop closed with his pet wombat over White?
Whelp, you wanted him to make in-game adjustments...
-
Re: Can we talk about the fact that Pop closed with his pet wombat over White?
You're right, we should phone the Spurs front office and let them know you should take over as head coach immediately.
-
Re: Can we talk about the fact that Pop closed with his pet wombat over White?
I think they want him to keep shooting to get him out of his funk. Unfortunately he's gonna keep shooting those in Game 7 :lol

Are you saying this was a good move simply because Pop is the GOAT you fuxking retard? Are you saying the decision is basketball related and not a clear sign of favoritism for his pet?

Pops obsession with him is exactly why an easy sweep turned into a game 7
-
Re: Can we talk about the fact that Pop closed with his pet wombat over White?
Law of averages of Manu’s old progression to the mean suggests Patty will hit a three in game 7. No way he finishes the year going 0 for whatever. Who knows maybe that one three is the difference maker like when he won the 2nd game of the year at LA.
-
Re: Can we talk about the fact that Pop closed with his pet wombat over White?
Maybe they saw an opportunity to rest White's plantar fasciitis injury, since the game was decided.

Everyone has been begging Pop to stagger White and DeRozan. Tonight he staggers White and DeRozan and the complaint shifts. Interesting stuff, tbh.
When it was time to put White back in, the game was over.

Let’s just enjoy this win. I get it. But our guys just sent a message. Big statement win. Let’s revisit this when the season ends, be it Saturday or later..

Who cares. The issue isn't that he went 0-7 (or whatever it was) from three. The issue is that Pop obviously has a soft spot for him despite his painfully obvious limitations. He shouldn't have been out there, period. He's inferior to White in every way.

Nah bruh. I could see it if he just had Wombat out there to buy a couple possessions to give White a small rest but that clearly wasn't the case. He went as far as to run a play for him despite Wombat being horrible on threes that are on the move/off screens all year long. Despite him being like 0-6 from three at that point in this game.
You're really going to tell me with a straight face that Pop doesn't have a soft spot for him because he's such a great teammate and overall great guy off the court?
-
Re: Can we talk about the fact that Pop closed with his pet wombat over White?
Same reason he was just such an ultra-dick in the postgame interview. They asked him about the effort, and he said, "Why would anybody not come to play? This is the playoffs... nobody is going to come out flat."
Do you think he just didn't notice that HIS fucking team came out flat last game, and didn't bring nearly the effort that Denver did? If he can overlook that, maybe he doesn't see what's happening with Mills on the floor. Fucking Alzheimers.
-
Re: Can we talk about the fact that Pop closed with his pet wombat over White?
The game was fucking over he was trying to get patty to shoot it off his funk.

Re: Can we talk about the fact that Pop closed with his pet wombat over White?
lol at the "they were just trying to help Wombat get out of his funk" BS
I could see that for LMA, Demar, Rudy, or even White. But for an overpaid, below average player, who is absolutely worthless on the other end, that should realistically only be seeing 10-15 MPG in this series? GTFO. How about just playing him less instead of trying to get him out of his funk. That'd be a lot better for the team.
-
Re: Can we talk about the fact that Pop closed with his pet wombat over White?
An utterly bizarre move, as White had just drained a 3, he's a much better player than Mills, it's an elimination game ffs, the Spurs need to re-inflate White's confidence because his game is critical to the Spurs success, etc, etc.
Denver made an adjustment after game 3 which apparently has stymied White, no doubt. However, it really does seem that Pop has instructed White to not look for his own shot as much since then. If Pop hasn't said that outright, his substitutions/roster management says that loud and clear.
At this point, Pop's micro-mismanagement is a net minus, and the Spurs players just have to be a lot better than their doddering, stumbling coach.

He's done that with Mills and Forbes, and they've had a hard time getting the shot off. I think he'd go with Belli or Gay, tbh.

White started the fourth (with DeRozan on the bench -- staggering, tbh), went out with five minutes to go and the lead ballooned to 20 within two minutes, tbh. Pop has used this rotation before and White would usually go back in with ~3:00 remaining but 'twas over tonight.

Re: Can we talk about the fact that Pop closed with his pet wombat over White?
Mills is a big part of the offensive flow of the bench unit so drawing up plays for him and encouraging him to shoot within reason is wise. Having Mills take shots will potentially help him catch fire and it's worth gambling a play here and there for that possibility.

The game was over. Knowing that White is playing with a painful injury why not give him as much rest as possible? Besides this was a nice win, so why in the fuck are you so angry? Save your raging hardon for Pop till after the season is.

Yeah, I don't get this. He rode the wave with White and Poeltl; both were in for a longer stretch than usual and the game was 99% in hand by the time he removed them. Maybe he could have rode them 1 more minute to push the 99 to 99.9, but that's nit picking.

How many 3 pointers does the little fucker have through 6 games? I count 2.
He might as well be wearing a Denver uniform at this point.

I'm afraid there wasn't any extra ordinary about Gregg's press manners. That is how Gregg has rolled ever since I can remember. Definitely at least 10 years back. He's never going to change in that setting.

My point is that he seemed totally unaware that his team didn't bring the effort in Game 5. Maybe he just can't admit to any fault - but that's what the OP was talking about. He just keeps throwing Patty in and it's a disaster.

It's an elimination game though ffs. The circumstances aren't exactly comparable to whatever other time he might've used that rotation. Buying him a quick breather I can understand...you know stick Patty in a corner for a possession or two, call a full timeout afterwards, etc. But nah Pop was out there calling plays for him.
They cut it down to 14 after the Harris 3 at about the 5:20 mark btw (still plenty of time), after which Pop called a timeout. Guess who he trotted out at the PG spot? I'm asbsolutely convinced this is a case of him trusting Wombat over White and not a case of White not being needed after the lead ballooned.

Because when Mills is going he has the potential to hit momentum shifting 3s, draw big charges, and exploit sloppy passing with steals. I understand the hate for him, I'm not a big fan of him either, but there's no denying he has the ability to get hot and make an impact.

Up until that point, White had played the whole second half outside of a two minute break at the end of the third. If you want him in at the start of the fourth to buy time without DeRozan (AKA staggering), you're going to have to live with a two minute break at around the five minute mark.

When was the last time Pop ended a game with Mills over White? It might have happened once in the last 50 or 60 games, tbh.
I understand being paranoid when Mills is involved but this is an unfounded worry, IMO.

But doesn't it just make so much more sense to just cut his minutes and make sure he doesn't play any critical minutes?
Like I said I get it with LMA or DD or Rudy, since there's no better options to turn to. But since when do you give more shots to a scrub when he's struggling just to get him going? Especially when there's a much much better option available. Just doesn't seem logical.

I don’t understand either. 3-11 shooting, no one-on-one defense. Except maybe a few steals, but more being in the right place at the right time. He didn’t force the turnover himself but the ball went his way. I have no idea while he closed instead of White

There was no reason to get White and his plantar fasciitis back on the court. Game was over with 4 min to go.

Tbh I’d rather see Lonnie substituting to protect the lead. Beli/Forbes are enough long range. The 3 together is just a formula for disaster. Lonnie is long and can actually slow down Murray or any of their guards, and could attack the rim and put pressure on their defense
-
Re: Can we talk about the fact that Pop closed with his pet wombat over White?
OP usually has good takes, this is not one of them. I saw no design plays for Mills, he was just open. He shouldn't have shot the ball but shooters shoot. He was terrible offensively but very solid defensively and thats what we needed at the end of this game.

I don't understand the fascination of many posters on Lonnie. The guy doesn't have a clue of what is doing. We seen it time and again. He needs to play some regular season minutes next year, and learn. A lot, since he doesn't even seem to have a good basketball IQ. So far great body and some few moves. That's it. He cannot play in the playoffs.
He will come along, in time. Now, no way he can play.
-
Re: Can we talk about the fact that Pop closed with his pet wombat over White?
I understand having him out there when the game was all but over just to try and shoot him out of his funk, but I was wondering when he was going to have his ass glued bertans style to the bench, it wasn't just the awful outside shooting but the botched point blank layups, botched loose balls he had so many golden opportunity's to make even a minimal beneficial impact on this game and he went in the opposite direction every chance he got.
I used to love the guy but at this point I'd rather see Forbes and Belinelli uptick their minutes. Watching it, it sure felt like he was in there for way too long when the game was still very close even if the minutes don't represent that. I mean at least I can say he tried very hard and did play with effort.
Feel like we've been waiting for him to shoot out of this funk since the summer of '14. Let's see how all these guys respond in Denver.
-

Pet wombat might be the most realistic description of Mills role on this team.
Priceless

Derek went out of the game with over 5 minutes left, and four fouls. Once SA got it back up to 20 at about the 2 minute mark, there really wasn't a reason to bring him back in.

Actually you are bringing the Argument not to sub White and Poeltl out. With 5 Minutes left, Denver still could make a run for the win. At that moment subbing out your best 2 Defenders begs for disaster. Luckily Denver had nothing left in the tank in that game. Remember game 2, where spurs let the foot of the gas and lost.

Whatever Bonner had on Pop, he sold it to Wombat tbh.

Even worse than I could've ever imagined.
Wombat played the last 16 minutes of the game. White on the bench.
-
Re: Can we talk about the fact that Pop closed with his pet wombat over White?
Great D by Wombat at 88-86 with the chance for the stop and game tying/winning shot.
Also failure to foul when behind 90-86 with 16 seconds left. :lmao
-
Re: Can we talk about the fact that Pop closed with his pet wombat over White?
Before idiots say "yeah but White was 0-7" wtf did Wombat do offensively those last 16 minutes? Atleast White gives you consistent effort on the defensive end. I mean fuck at the very least do the obvious offense/defense substitutions. 88-86 and you trot Wombat out there?
But no Pop wanted to make it clear how much trust he has in his pet wombat!
-
Re: Can we talk about the fact that Pop closed with his pet wombat over White?
Did Mills even hit a 3 pointer during that 16 minutes stretch? Only reason for him to be over White at that point.

I understand being paranoid when Mills is involved but this is an unfounded worry, IMO.
Well, so much for that huh? Not in my wildest dreams could I have imagined what Pop did today.

Warned you all about the Microwave. Many didnt listen.

Re: Can we talk about the fact that Pop closed with his pet wombat over White?
Patty was terrible all series long and DWhite was bad the first 3 quarters....so of course Pop closed the last 16 minutes with fatty.
timvp i see you lurking, my guy. Are we going to go with a) Derrick seemed hurt b) Derrick was so bad that Patty was the clear choice with his experience
I mean how dare anybody question a GOAT like Pop....
-
Re: Can we talk about the fact that Pop closed with his pet wombat over White?
Just remember.....
The Pop Suckers scoffed at this thread citing that Pop had closed with DWhite over Patty time and time again....
But in the end, when it mattered most, Pop went to that fat fuck to close a game 7 and the Pop suckers are gonna say he had no choice since Derrick was terrible, while conveniently ignoring how absolute shit Patty was for the entire series.....
I just pray that they play the Patty is hurt card, please.....

It's funny that Game 6 when he closed with Wombat despite him being 0-8 from three, their argument was "they were trying to get Patty out of his funk".
Game 7, White is struggling and doesn't see the floor the last quarter and a half, not even for defensive purposes and they can't stop going on about how it was the right call. Or the "lesser of two evils".
Why does the scrub still get minutes when he's struggling and the guy who was the 3rd best player on the team all year not? Where is the fucking consistency by Pop?
-
Re: Can we talk about the fact that Pop closed with his pet wombat over White?
Correction: Just went back and checked. Wombat checked in at the 8:45 mark of the 3rd Qtr. He played the last 20:45 of the game.
:pctoss

Did he even make a shot during that span? I'm sure he must have, but I'm wondering how many, tbh. :lol

Good call, tbh :depressed

Possibly the longest stretch of PT given to any player this series?

Pop is not consistent. But it's only really a problem when it costs them games and series.

Nope. :lol
But he looked like he was playing with more confidence than White though!
3rd Qtr
4th Qtr

Patty finished the series with an anemic 3PT% of 13.6%.
In 7 games, he connected on only 3 shots from downtown.
I know he was playing with a bad thumb, but that is still absolutely dreadful and definitely played a factor in the Spurs demise.

Re: Can we talk about the fact that Pop closed with his pet wombat over White?
White shrank in the moment. Not surprised
-
Re: Can we talk about the fact that Pop closed with his pet wombat over White?
There was a camera shot of White near the end of the game. He looked like he was kind of sad and confused.

Wtf did Mills do? I think Mills is so high energy that it confuses Pop. He sees the energy but not the awful defense and missed shots.

Yes, so did Aldridge and DeRozan in the first two quarters.
Why doesn't White get a chance to redeem himself.
Patty never showed he was effective this entire series yet he plays to close out the last 20 minutes?
