Speculation:
It may have something to do with a vaccine we all have had, but one developed or widespread in the last 60 years, or that fades over time, akin to tetanus shots that require boosters.
Young children, who all have to have their shots would have much more recent immunity. It would explain both levels of vulnerability.
If that is the case we may already have a vaccine that works at least mildly, but just don't know it.

If one has had one of the several human corona viruses as simple cold or flu:

... then T-cells have have been primed for C19 having been stimulated by other non-fatal coronaviruses

As FAILED STATE USA continues to have 10Ms of bad-faith, anti-govt assholes
who refuse masks and distancing, the REPUG so-called govt FAILS to provide enough testing, rapid results testing, and contact tracing

Republican in the hospital with COVID-19 after suggesting virus is a ‘hoax’ and preaching at maskless church service
https://www.rawstory.com/wp-content/...s-service.jpeg
Arkansas State Sen. Jason Rapert (R)
has a known history of downplaying the coronavirus,
even pushing narratives on social media that describe it as a “hoax.”
Now, he’s contracted the virus after appearing as a guest preacher at Sanctuary of Hope church in Branson, Missouri about two weeks ago.
According to a post on his Facebook page this Thursday, Rapert is in the hospital “after being diagnosed with pneumonia and
testing positive for Covid-19.”
“We have all been doing our best to wear a mask, :lol
social distance :lol
and be careful like everyone else. :lol
This virus is serious :lol
and can attack anyone regardless of age or general health,” he added.

Current coronavirus wave 'could continue through the winter'
now it's looking more likely that the first wave will continue for months,

There are no waves. Without lockdown and actually ramping up testing and contact tracing to actually accomplish something with a lockdown it's probably not hitting a lull until it infects a significant proportion of Americans.

So, the entire U.S. deaths are on par with just NY in mid-April.

So, Darrin has set into broken record mode

NY population density made it extraordinarily vulnerable.
Also being a major hub for the transport of people.
Sadly the warmer weather did the opposite possibly of what it was supposed to, it kept people in close contact inside.
But when people decided to cram together anyway in the South, they burst the chance they had.
Our federal government was extraordinarily counter productive almost the entire way. (under the orange, who gave up trying to talk it down)

That you think this is somehow comforting is really weird, considering that NY was the previous epicenter and had like -- half the deaths overall? Is that right?

If all these "hot spot" states were having 1K deaths per day, it would be horrific. But, that's not the case.

Pardon me if I don't share your sense of the diminishing marginal disutility of death.
Exactly what threshold of death do you deem tolerable? 168 is the TX death toll today.
For how long will that be tolerable?
Do you think that frequency will increase in the winter months? Will it be tolerable then if it is just a thousand deaths a day, instead of a hundred a day, because someone exceeded that daily count somewhere else?
Before I say anything else, what you just said is one of the creepiest things I have ever witnessed with my own eyes.

One of the creepiest things that you've ever witnessed with your own eyes? Really?
I should feel bad that Texas, currently, isn't nearly as bad as NY in its peak?
-
Re: Coronavirus is one mutation away from infecting millions
In my zip code with 30K residents, there are just over 200 cumulative cases and zero deaths.
