Yep. Deaths lag and the low death rate now is a reflection of peak social distancing in late April through early May.

Maybe the Italians are right and the virus gets weaker over time?

Most pandemics follow this trajectory regardless of mutations. Be patient. The numbers will sadly rise again.

My unscientific speculation is that treatments are better and distance/masking measures are reducing viral loads in initial infections.
Also millennials and younger folk in bars.

Plus infections are no longer exponential once a pretty significant portion of the population has been infected and either recovered or died since it has less targets to spread to. Though without distancing and mask use it would probably still be a very steep rise, just not exponential steep.
