The Democrats only have 15 states that lean 3% or more to the left of the country as a whole, while the Republicans have 26 states that are 3% or more to the right of the country (there are 9 states within 3% of the country as a whole). The Democrats more or less need DINOs like Joe Manchin and Jon Tester in order to control the senate, while Republicans can maintain ideologically purity and just win the states they're supposed to win.

People were right though the Republicans experienced a drastic shift after Bush, they just didn't expect it to be further to the right.
