Put A White Guy On Wells?
For those Spurs fans too young to remember, Bonzi Wells has a history of not being the most politically correct individual on the planet.
Quote:
In November 2002, Wells was fined for spitting on San Antonio player Danny Ferry and calling him a "honky" during a game. The following December, he was fined for his involvement in a post-game brawl with the Golden State Warriors, calling the team's Troy Murphy a "cracker."
Perhaps this could be Bonzi's one weakness. He doesn't like white people. The Spurs need to take every advantage they can get and as we know, history is bound to repeat itself.
Who should the Spurs try on Wells? Brent Barry hasn't been horrible against him. Maybe Sean Marks can be activated for this specific role. He's kinda fiesty. Rasho's playing well and could use his length. Beno is pretty small but the Spurs need to think outside of the box.
How about Manu or Oberto?
Hmmmm.

In game three a good run was made with a lineup of Barry, Beno, Rasho, Gino, and Timmy

Those statements WERE hilarious but I have to agree with you, Bonzi has mentally matured since joining the Kings. I was talking the other day about how he just walks off when he thinks he's been fouled or he'll maybe mention something in a calm manner to the ref but he leaves it at that. He didn't used to be that way, it's a good thing to see. Artest was so calm the last game too, I'm happy to see that they are putting it all into the game and not living up to some of the stereotypes that people wanna put on them.

Racism = Ignorance. Ignorance is not a genetic trait thus change is ALWAYS possible. Anyway, this strays from basketball, if i wanted to talk about race issues I'd go elsewhere.
-
Re: Put A White Guy On Wells?
Then go elsewhere.
They are on their best behaviour now.
If the SPurs come out tommarow night and start winning, and winning big, they will revert to their old ways.
Ala Ron Artest in game 1.

Free the Kiwi and retire Nazr. And we have a series. ;)

Bruce has had trouble with LeBron and Carmelo for the same reasons he has had trouble with Artest and Bonzi(and this isn't the first trouble he's had with Artest, and Bonz never cared much prior to this series but he's had some big games, and team wins, against us too in Bruce's career).
When we had Hedo we used Hedo to guard Artest, and I think Hedo did a lot of guarding Bonzi in the playoffs in 04. LeBron worked Bruce pretty good the first time they matched up. Bruce's D has improved on LeBron since...but I can't say he's figured out Carmelo. Thing is, all 3 of their teams have had some regular season success against us, and Carmelo gave us fits last year in the playoffs, remember?
Bruce is tailor made for Kobe Bryant though...Kobe doesn't go 230lbs of pure power...Kobe's game is speed and athleticism. Bruce was brought to the Spurs and given a starting role to defend Kobe Bryant and no other player, becaus the Lakers were the one team we coudln't beat and Kobe tagging us for 40 a game was the reason why(see the 2001 WCF), and he's earned every bit of his pay, and his starting role, and then some, for what he's done against Kobe since coming here...He ended up becoming a bigger part of the soul of this team and it's success in the ensuing years than I think anyone envisioned when he was first signed to be the Kobe stopper...

Re: Put A White Guy On Wells?
I say put Oberto out there. He can't do any worse than anyone else has been doing and maybe he'd get a rebound here and there.
-
Re: Put A White Guy On Wells?
Melvin Sanders would probably do a better job of staying in front of Bonzi and bodying-up on him than the Kiwi. Marks has length but he also plays weak D.
Oberto would do a great job down on the block and boxing out but if he were defending Bonzi, or Artest for that matter, the problem would come when the Kings start the iso out on the floor. From there, Wells or Artest can either back their man down with a smaller, quicker defender like Bruce and Manu or drive around the slower Bigs like Horry or Oberto.
I do miss Danny sometimes.

Re: Put A White Guy On Wells?
Sean is feisty, doesn't take shit, crashes the board, plays hard.
He'd drive Bonzi Bonkers.
Oberto seems to have better presence/anticipation of where to go, where to be on the low block in rotations. Whereas Nazr just doesn't have a fucking clue of what's going on.
Tim is playing AK47 Kirilenko basketball. Rather than rotating quickly into position in front of the driver, he matador-like let's the driver get by and then tries to block the layup from behind. Seems like Tim wants no part of rotating quick enough to take a charge/physical contact.
Bonzi is a lot/too much for one person, but sending doubles and QUICK help from our bigs could slow him down.
But in WCF 05 we let Amare go off for 15 - 20 pts more than Bonzi's geting, but shut down everbody else.
The problem is that Spurs have forgotten how to play tough, shutdown defense, while the Kings have sent the Spurs 3G shooting into the toilet in Game3,4.

Re: Put A White Guy On Wells?
I like the Rasho idea- because the only thing "worse" than a white guy from Duke would be a white guy from Europe! :lol
-
Re: Put A White Guy On Wells?
I think Duncan and Bowen should guard Bonzi. Manu gets pushed around too much. Whichever isn't guarding Bonzi should guard Artest. The key is to get them in foul trouble before they get our guys in foul trouble. Fouls have played a big part of this series - and that includes some crappy calls early on that have taken Duncan, especially, out of his game when we needed him.
-
Re: Put A White Guy On Wells?
I sort of like the idea of trying Oberto. He's going to get some boards and his length should bother Bonzi ... plus he's not going to get pushed around by Wells.
Not saying he should get 30 mins a game, but how about some spot duty to see how it works? Bonzi's already torching everyone else, what could it hurt? And if Oberto goes into foul mode, Bonzi's not the world's best FT shooter - shooting 60% so far in the first round.
-
Re: Put A White Guy On Wells?
Oberto or Marks it is then! :elephant

Pop will not suddenly play the #12 or #13 guy as a solution for Wells. I think you need to go at him and get him in foul trouble.

Re: Put A White Guy On Wells?
If they're putting Marks on Bonzi, they should give him a buzz cut, tell him to grow out some patches of facial hair and teach him a good Mississippi accent. Just to enhance the effect.
