Where the Spurs stand as of now

In the West;



1. Dallas Mavericks: Great coach (Johnson), Big time superstar that thrives under pressure (Nowitzki) and a strong, reliable second scorer (Howard)
2. Phoenix Suns: MVP (Nash), Amare rounding into form, two solid tweeners that rebound (Diaw/Marion)
3. Lakers: Best coach in the NBA (Jackson), best player in the NBA (Bryant) and a supporting cast that doesn't get enough respect.
4. Utah- leading candidate for this year’s MVP (Boozer), great coach (Sloan, emerging superstar PG (Williams)- thoroughly dominated the Spurs.
5. The Spurs


The Spurs are not as good as either of these teams right now. Nevermind the it’s early crap- we’re a third through the season and San Antonio hasn’t proven they can beat these teams. They needed an 11 for 11 night from Oberto to beat Phoenix who were still integrating Amare at the time. Boozer is a better player at this stage of his career than Duncan. A healthy Kirilienko kills us and Deron Williams is light years ahead of Tony Parker. What’s more alarming is that the Spurs could have won these games but were OUTCOACHED down the stretch by their opponents- Pop’s fourth quarter line-up vs Dallas, Pop’s calling four down twelve straight times against Utah, Pop going small against the Lakers etc……


If I were you, I would seriously think about lowering expectations for two reasons; a) I used to think Tim Duncan could make up for Pop’s stupidity- he’s just not that good anymore and b) Gregg Popovich is scary stupid.


Same shit as last year- we’ll make the playoffs and lose a close series to one of the these four teams mainly because our coach can't make in-game adjustments. Seeing Duncan turn into a scoutmaster last night and get violated by the likes of Kwame Brown just makes things worse.

Who else would LOVE to see PJ Carlesimo coach the Spurs for at least 15 games? If, for no other reason that to just see what could be different? Pop has lost sight of the forest throught the trees. Do you really think Avery Johnson would be starting Jerry Stackhouse if he was shooting 30%?!

When did PJ become such a great coach?

He sucked last time he was a headcoach in the NBA and I have no desire to see him become the coach of this team while Pop is available. Pop isn't perfect, but he's better than anything else we can get right now. He's definitely better than Carlesimo.

If Pat Riley or Phil Jackson become available, I'll be all for dumping Pop in favor of them....but since they aren't...I'm not about to dump him for some guy that couldn't even win the big one heading a major college program.

Horseshit. We are a third through the season if they changed the number of games to 60. Every team the Spurs play compete as if it is game 7. Kobe, off a sprained ankle played 40 minutes last night. Do you think Pop would have played him 40?, when Ginobili is on his 3rd or 4th game back and plays 23? Pop coaches the same way every year. You ought to be used to it by now. Amazing that Johnson has coached less than 3 years and you call him a "great coach" He would be lost without Del Harris.

I'm pointing out patterns that don't and won't go away. Last time I checked, the NBA had about six elite teams and the rest was absolute crap so excuse me if I'm not impressed with playing .700 ball. There was a time when 'demand for excellence' meant something.

And Yankee fans have the right to complain. Way to go, Walton. You've just increased the average age for "emos". The Jazz and Spurs had the best records in the NBA not one day ago. The Spurs lose a game by being careless for a 4-5 minute stretch against a team with Kobe Bryant and Lamar Odom ON THE ROAD and all of a sudden, the Spurs are 5th in the West? Not to take anything away from the Lakers, because they do play pretty decent perimeter D and they have active hands, but let's not get too emotional about an L.

Pop's teams don't start playing well together on a consistent basis until he knows what he has and they know each other better...as in February, March and April. It's not a maybe, it's a fact. It's not uncommon for teams to let-up every now and then, especially after several blow-out wins. I think TP was more interested in talking to Kobe about Eva's diamond than in taking care of the other rock.

Simmah down a bit. It's a month and a half into the NBA marathon.

And while everyone is entitled to their opinion, this was a bit overboard. First of all if Popovich were so incompetent, I don't think Tim Duncan and the many other players who have played under him would have regarded him so highly. I had the pleasure of getting to know Danny Ferry and some other players of late and Pop actually is my folks' neighbor, so I've met him. While I don't exactly rant with them about basketball all the time, I have gotten the impression that Pop is pretty solid and has a good basketball IQ. According to Ferry, Pop is one of the top coaches in the league.

The point is its easy to have elevated expectations when you are the fan of the winningest sports franchise in the U.S....or the world?...over the past decade or so. And while everyone has a right to maintain those expectations, we all don't have to agree with them. Having said that, I love WaltonBuysMeOff's entertaining as hell takes and cracks, but I mightily disagree with him here.

Yeah, Dirk really melted under the pressure of that game 7 in San Antonio. I'd be the first to say Dirk was not a pressure player if I thought it was true. So the Spurs were the shit in 2004-2005 when they were 17-5 at this exact same point? As opposed to them being 16-6 now? Or how about when they were 13-9 in 2002-2003. I bet you were on the verge of cutting your pecker off, or atleast trying to find it so that you could then cut it off.
