Report: Gasol wants to play for contender
ADRID (Ticker) -- There is more bad news for the Memphis Grizzlies. Spanish star Pau Gasol would rather play for a championship contender.
Gasol told the "El Tirachanas" program on Spanish television's COPE that he wanted "to be with a team competing for a ring," something that he added would be "very difficult" to do with the Grizzlies.
Gasol broke the fifth metatarsal in his left foot while playing for Spain in the semifinals of the FIBA World Championship last summer. He missed the championship game but still was named tournament MVP as Spain won the gold medal.
Without their All-Star forward, the Grizzlies are off to a 5-17 start.
Gasol is set to make his long-awaited return for the Grizzlies on Saturday when they visit the Miami Heat.
But Gasol's days in Memphis may be numbered. Speculation has swirled that the Chicago Bulls and Boston Celtics may be interested in acquiring him.
"There is some truth in it, especially with the whole situation of the change of owners (with the Grizzlies)," Gasol told COPE. "The situation has been uncomfortable, but there are not only the Bulls and Boston, there are other teams interested."
A group headed by former NBA player Christian Laettner and his former Duke University teammate Brian Davis is seeking to purchase the Grizzlies.

What Would We Have To Give For Gasol?
Don't know if this has been brought up in another thread but if you were to want him, what do you think the Spurs would have to give up in order to land him?
-
Re: What Would We Have To Give For Gasol?
I'd be surprised if we could get him for anything less than Parker.
-
Re: Report: Gasol wants to play for contender
The dude thinks entirely too much of himself
-
Re: What Would We Have To Give For Gasol?
This is a pretty ridiculous thread. Obviously we would have to include at least one of the big 3 & that isn't going to happen. He is the Grizzlies superstar & its going to take at least 1 big name plus picks to get Gasol. He will not be available for say EWill, Barry & Butler, thats for sure.
-
Re: What Would We Have To Give For Gasol?
IF we dont land my boy c-webb, then Stackhouse, croshere, buckner, george, picks for Mike Miller/Gasol.
Imagine Harris/Jet/Howard/Dirk/Gasol :drunk :drunk :drunk
EARTH TO MARK CUBAN....TRADE FOR CHRIS WEBBER! :dramaquee

Exactly right. The dude thinks he's the best shit since sliced bread and has never even gotten out of the 1st round and has only made 1 all-star game, so it's not like he's been putting superstar-type numbers in all his seasons.
He got his fat contract from a rebuilding franchise though and now wants to run with it while he can.
Quote:
wouldn't you if you were a top tier big man who helped lead his team to a world championship
"Top-tier" until last season. First time the dude's made the all-star and is already demanding a trade and trying to ruin a franchise.
And he made the world championship with a roster loaded with nba players used to playing international basketball together (yes maybe not allstar nba players, but still decent nba players), so don't give him too much credit for that.

Re: What Would We Have To Give For Gasol?
Gasol would be an amazing pickup. A Ducan/Gasol frontcourt would be absolutely unreal. In the playoffs though would Gasol be able to guard Dirk?
-
Re: What Would We Have To Give For Gasol?
You'd have to offer Parker and Ginobili for Memhpis to even pick up the phone.

He's a 20/8 player with no off the court problems or anything. So why would they give him up for nothing? They'd want Parker plus some.
-
Re: What Would We Have To Give For Gasol?
I would offer them anyone except for tp and duncan
-
Re: What Would We Have To Give For Gasol?
If we would trade Parker then we would not have a good PG. Only if you guys think that Beno and Vaughn can replace him, and who thinks that I think he must be stupid.
Trade Manu would be just great. Michael Finley sucks, so our SG position would be the worst in the league. Then there is no replacement for Finley so he would play 48 minutes per game.
If we lose one of them and get Gasol we would be not a better team.
How many shots will TD take when Pau will be in the team? If there would be no Manu the Parker would take 20 shots per game, Gasol 18 shots per game, Finley 12 shots per game.
Tim Duncan now takes just 10 shots per game on the other side Tony shots 18 times. Even Finley shots more than Duncan. That sucks in my opinion.
I don't think that TP is our main guy in the team, so wtf is wrong with Pop.! He told TP that he needs to shot 20 shots per game. That is just stupid.
Tim is playing like a reserve in the team, taking 10 shots per game. What would happen if Duncan would take 20 shots per game like Carmelo or James. He would have 35 points per game. But no Pop thinks that TP must shot more than Duncan. :madrun

Re: What Would We Have To Give For Gasol?
pau would make up for manu
besides paul is going to be great longer then manu
tp though would have to step up more in fourth without manu
finley was a big spark in playoffs last year
-
Re: What Would We Have To Give For Gasol?
stop trying to trade our big 3!!!
Gasol - no way in hell we'd get him. Not even for Manu or Parker or both
-
Re: What Would We Have To Give For Gasol?
I would not trade two of the three and the only one I would trade would be manu
because of his injuries and how many great years he has left

Well, that settles it, then. Somebody who calls himself ducks takes nothing but money into consideration while making decisions about his own life, therefore one of the very best professional basketball players in the world should use the same calculus and, more importantly, shut the fuck up QED. Makes perfect sense.
Cleveland isn't a contender, but trading Gooden and Ilgauskas for Gasol might well make them one.
Snow-Hughes-James-Varejao-Gasol? Not bad.
-
Re: What Would We Have To Give For Gasol?
Gasol is my favorite non-Spur but I doubt he goes anywhere, he's one of the most underrated players in the NBA and is a top 10 talent. Look at how bad the Grizz are without him!
I want him here no doubt but I accept that no way we'd get him without ditching Parker, Ginobili, Duncan, or Bowen.
Why would we ever trade Parker?! Ginobili would be gone before Parker, and I don't want our core to go away.

Re: What Would We Have To Give For Gasol?
Um, earth to those with questionable sanity:
1. why would Mem give away their franchise big?
2. why would we gut our team? (balance is important, as we all learned last year)
3. it's the era of small ball again! Why would we want Twin Towers? We did that at the right time and owned the league, we do it now, and trade our all-star guards to get it done, and we'd be a bubble team at best!
:wtf

I think this is the crux of the argument here. Even if the Spurs decided to offload Manu and Parker to get Gasol, it wouldn't make sense as the dynamics of the NBA have changed to favor perimeter players. Dominating post players are less important in this day and age. And Gasol is a damn good player, but not the type of player who alters the landscape of a basketball game just by being out on the court.
-
Re: What Would We Have To Give For Gasol?
Gasol is KG, minus the tan. They tease, they tantalize, they put up nice numbers, but when you need a franchise player to step up, they fade. I wouldn't trade ANY of our bit three for Gasol, and would have a hard time with key role players.
-
Re: What Would We Have To Give For Gasol?
No thanks :td Gasol is all hype and no substance (at least when the chips are down).
-
Re: What Would We Have To Give For Gasol?
Gasol is good. Similiar type of player to a young Duncan, minus the defense. Similiar type of player offensively in terms of production.
-
Re: What Would We Have To Give For Gasol?
mem would have to trade him if he demanded to move

...except during crunch time.
It's not so much that they haven't advanced past the first round. It's the fact that they've gotten the broom up the ass for three years running. How can you not even take a game in three years of first round series? That's fucking pathetic.

What could SA do to get Gasol?
I am not one to propose ridiculous one sided trades but this snipit caught my eye. David DuPree has never come across to me as a 'Vescey' type source. Let's assume he's correct what in the hell would we have to offer the Griz?
Long Beach, CA: Hello Mr. Dupree. What's your take on the sudden Kobe Bryant one game suspension for the alleged intentional elbow on Manu Ginobili. Which team do you think will acquire Pau Gasol and Eddie Jones before the February deadline. Thanks! Chris
David DuPree: It looks like Eddie Jones is already gone to the Heat, but Pau Gasol is a different matter. He is a real difference maker and will command a lot. Chicago and San Antonio appear to be the hottest after Gasol, but he could end up darn near anywhere because of his age, overall ability and size.

Re: What could SA do to get Gasol?
I would trade any combination of anyone not named Duncan and either Manu or Parker.
The chance to get a world class big man to recreate the towers does not come around often.
-
Re: What could SA do to get Gasol?
Just an information to start some crazy speculation : West and Paxson were in France today to watch the game between Kaunas and Pau and we all know who play at Pau. ;)
-
Re: What could SA do to get Gasol?
I am sure the Spurs are interested in Gasol but they will not get him without giving up at least Manu, which won't happen... I wonder where these rumors come form...
-
Re: What could SA do to get Gasol?
This is one of those trades where there is no way Memphis is going to get anything close to equal value.

Interesting... maybe the Spurs are in talks with Memphis about other players!? I can't imagine that they really consider trading Gasol to SA...

yea he is demanding a trade and wants out. This reminds me a lot of the shaq deal. They will get on decent player and some scrubs. Maybe a pick.
-
Re: What could SA do to get Gasol?
I think one thing that will burden Gasol in terms of dealing him to a contender for something close to equal value is the fact that he's shown himself to be a rather soft player in the playoffs.
Memphis may have figured out that it's not going to win with Gasol. Given that he's got a huge contract (they're on the hook for $86M through 2011) and they're in the midst of clearing the decks with the ownership situation in flux, they might actually be willing to just create cap space and acquire picks and prospects in the hope that they can surround whomever they get early in the 2007 draft with some players to make them competitive as they rebuild.
-

I was just teasing people. :)
More likely it has nothing to do with a trade, there are a lot of interesting players to see in this game. There are some really good prospects in Pau (Ajinca and Vaty) and in Kaunas (Maciulis and Kalnietis). There are too older players wiht a nba level like Aaron Miles.

I'd generally agree with you. But if the Spurs figure that Gasol is about as well as they'd do on the free agency market in 2008, they might be willing to do away with the 2008 plan, particularly if they can rid themselves of some bad contracts in the short term.
With that said, I don't think that is the case and I can't imagine that the Spurs are serious contenders for Gasol at this point.
-
Re: What could SA do to get Gasol?
Gasol/Duncan would be pretty sick, but it'd take Parker and the Grizz might require that whatever team asks for him takes back a fat contract (Cardinal or Stoudamire)....something like this:
Parker + Williams for Gasol + Stoudamire...if that works
Does anyone know how much Stoudamire makes per year?
-

That assumes that the Spurs are planning on doing anything significant in the 2008 free agency market. The 2008 "plan" more likely is "get payroll as low as possible so Holt & Co. get the maximum sale price."
-
Re: What could SA do to get Gasol?
It's also conceivable to me that the Spurs are being mentioned in the rumor, but are in the potential deal as a third team -- that might allow, for instance, the Spurs to deal a package "assets" like Scola, Beno, Williams and draft picks to a couple of teams and to get back something of use that wouldn't otherwise be available.
Just a thought.
-

I wouldn't pull the trigger on that trade if I was RC, but the salaries match and IF we had to choose between keeping EITHER Manu OR Tony, I would keep Tony.

Don't get me wrong....Manu is a great player that can flat out take over a game if he has to, but with Pau and Duncan together...damn that'd be....well like the Duncan/O'Neal combo the Spurs dreamed about a couple summers ago.

it could happen but I don't think it would. But still I think trading manu at this point would not be a good idea.
-
Re: What could SA do to get Gasol?
Manu is our only "all-star calibur" wing player, which every successful team needs. Now, if they could get him for Gasol, and then go out and get a similiar type player, that'd be fine, even if Ginobili is second favorite player after Tim.
Quality wing players are a lot more common than quality big men.

Cause there was no way we give up one of the big 3 for Maggette. That would not have been worth it by any standards.
However, if we are talking moving Gasol for Manu, that would be a different story. We would however have to involve a third team say Golden State. I proposed the trade in another thread and the numbers work. Manu to Golden State, Jason Richardson to Memphis, Gasol to SA with other players and maybe pick here and there.

I agree with that. I can't imagine that the Spurs would really be willing to give up any of the Big 3 or to take on a monsterous salary for a guy like Gasol, who might create more problems than he would solve while bringing the sort of Stay-Puft softness that the Spurs have tried to avoid for so many years. For $86M, you get a lot of nice regular season numbers followed by a playoff MIA.

Successful Scenario
Due to San Antonio and Memphis being over the cap, the 25% trade rule is invoked. San Antonio and Memphis had to be no more than 125% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Crazy, but if the Grizz were really looking to dump Gasol, if the Spurs were really willing to take on a huge commitment like Gasol's contract and if the Grizz thought that highly of Mahinmi it could work.

If that was the trade offered to the Spurs, what Bryant just said, Id do it so fast their heads would spin.
I thought Gasol in the playoffs against the Spurs, played pretty friggen good.
He rebounds well, can block shots and has a nice back tot he basket game, but also can shoot the jumper.
More than likely though, this is all poppycock though.

I can't believe all the haters on this forum. Though Pau is not a leader, he can flat-out dominate on offense.
The Grizzlies won't "dump" him for anything less than high draft picks/top-level prospects

Yes, I've seen Gasol play and I know he prefers the mid-range shot and fadaways, but I don't see how his lack of "toughness" translates into lack of production.

I see you focused on the single-game effort and not on the year average statistics to prove your point....he's 8th on the blocks leader list (two behind Duncan).
Bottom Line: When a guy has the potential to put up 30/15/5/5 on a given night, I could care less what his "label" is....just put him on my team.

In regards to Gasol disappearing in the play offs, he has had to be the main big in the past. Pressure on him would be less with Duncan who is quite comfortable stepping up in the playoffs. Gasol might well shake that monkey off his back with Duncan by his side. It's fun to dream but I would be shocked, shocked I say if Gasol ended up wearing the silver and black.

I watched the game and must say I liked the way Mahinmi played.
Very agressive both sides of the court, very mobile, grabbing rebounds, dunking the ball, setting good screens...He also seems to have bulked up and start to look good.
He still have foul trouble issues but that's something he will fix with more PT and experience. I've seen him play a few times this year and that's the first time he looked that active to me.
I don't know if he'll be ready next year, maybe/probably one more year with a bit more PT in Europe would be fine, but for those who can't see him play, you can have good hopes on the kid.
