Re: What could SA do to get Gasol?
I think one thing that will burden Gasol in terms of dealing him to a contender for something close to equal value is the fact that he's shown himself to be a rather soft player in the playoffs.
Memphis may have figured out that it's not going to win with Gasol. Given that he's got a huge contract (they're on the hook for $86M through 2011) and they're in the midst of clearing the decks with the ownership situation in flux, they might actually be willing to just create cap space and acquire picks and prospects in the hope that they can surround whomever they get early in the 2007 draft with some players to make them competitive as they rebuild.

I was just teasing people. :)
More likely it has nothing to do with a trade, there are a lot of interesting players to see in this game. There are some really good prospects in Pau (Ajinca and Vaty) and in Kaunas (Maciulis and Kalnietis). There are too older players wiht a nba level like Aaron Miles.
Re: What could SA do to get Gasol?
I don't see it happening. He makes too much damn money. I could be wrong though.

Yeah, with that contract I'm sure the Spurs are really serious about trade talks...

I'd generally agree with you. But if the Spurs figure that Gasol is about as well as they'd do on the free agency market in 2008, they might be willing to do away with the 2008 plan, particularly if they can rid themselves of some bad contracts in the short term.
With that said, I don't think that is the case and I can't imagine that the Spurs are serious contenders for Gasol at this point.
Re: What could SA do to get Gasol?
Gasol/Duncan would be pretty sick, but it'd take Parker and the Grizz might require that whatever team asks for him takes back a fat contract (Cardinal or Stoudamire)....something like this:
Parker + Williams for Gasol + Stoudamire...if that works
Does anyone know how much Stoudamire makes per year?

That assumes that the Spurs are planning on doing anything significant in the 2008 free agency market. The 2008 "plan" more likely is "get payroll as low as possible so Holt & Co. get the maximum sale price."
Re: What could SA do to get Gasol?
It's also conceivable to me that the Spurs are being mentioned in the rumor, but are in the potential deal as a third team -- that might allow, for instance, the Spurs to deal a package "assets" like Scola, Beno, Williams and draft picks to a couple of teams and to get back something of use that wouldn't otherwise be available.
Just a thought.

Oh, I know.
Re: What could SA do to get Gasol?
Stoudemire makes about $4.2 mil/year for 3 more years

Thanks for the update! It's not as much as I thought he made, but that's still alot of cheese for a 33yr old who's consistently injured and severly declining in production.

Dirties,
Since when does a $120 million profit for my share of the team "amount to nothing?"
You're my backhoe forever,
Peter Holt
Re: What could SA do to get Gasol?
I was thinking Manu and Williams for Gasol would come close, salary wise. I would rather ship off Manu than Tony...Tony is only 24 and still has a ton of upside.

The thought does make sense, but trading Manu would hurt at the wing position badly.

Yeah, but having two all-stars that can put up 20/10 every night would make up for the lack of wing support.
Re: What could SA do to get Gasol?
I wouldn't pull the trigger on that trade if I was RC, but the salaries match and IF we had to choose between keeping EITHER Manu OR Tony, I would keep Tony.

Don't get me wrong....Manu is a great player that can flat out take over a game if he has to, but with Pau and Duncan together...damn that'd be....well like the Duncan/O'Neal combo the Spurs dreamed about a couple summers ago.

well in fairness to the spurs they have never really had to land a big name free agent. With the lottery luck and all they have always receieved their franchise player in the draft.
