Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
OMG. We nearly lost cause the damn refs were making ridiculous calls at the end. Late whistle on Bowen for a questionable foul on Rip. But that call to give Detroit a time out when Billups didnt have posession of the ball was really ridiculous. I mean he threw the ball away and then made the sign. :madrun :madrun
At least Manu made amends for that stupid turnover by icing free throws to win the game. If not we would be cursing the damn refs again. :bang :bang :bang
-
Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
I only started watching at the end of the third. The refs were ridiculous both ways.
The Spurs were trying to give it away all by themselves.
-
Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
San Antonio got the favorable whistle for the first 3.5 quarters, and then Detroit got it down the stretch. Horrible officiating both ways.
No need to overreact, though. The refs didn't determine the outcome of the game.
-
Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
The Refs were horrible all game. Even Elliott started mentioning it.
-
Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
Questionable foul? Bowen practically knocked him over... If that was TP, you'd be begging for a flagrant.
-
Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
You're begging for the flagrant, dude. :ihit

Pop had some dumb rotations in that fourth quarter and he is damn lucky Bowen stopped everyone all by himself. :D
-
Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
Refs sucked on both sides, but they didn't almost lose the game for the Spurs.
-
Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
Did u guys see the charge Rip took against Brent? omg it's air contact and definitely the worst of flops =(!!!
-
Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
I can only imagine what this board would be life if you actually beat the Mavs this year.
-
Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
Refs had some pretty poor calls both ways all night long. Rasheed did far less than Tony Parker and Elson when arguing calls to get a technical foul. Rasheed also didn't get a to the hoop call when he got fouled on a fade-away jumper. Duncan got a couple of chippies as well with very minimal contact.
Chauncey and Rip both had a few flops in the game, I'll admit that. But, Chauncey's big flop on the 3 pointer, well, he didn't get a call. Chauncey is very adept at drawing body contact fouls when he's just dribbling the ball. And, we all know Manu has been notorious for exaggerating contact throughout his career. The few games I've watched, it looks as though he's not as big a flopper now, but plenty of players do it.

you're right, blaha is just downright terrible, no which ways about it

Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
To be fair....Elliott is just as quick to rip a Spur as he is to praise him.
-
Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
there is homer all over tonight, the spurs almost lost another homegame on a soldout friday night..
they showed up for the first quarter and then got their asses kicked. thanks to bonner they won... :lol

Blaha tries to disguise his homerism most of the time. But, it's definitely there. It's more noticeable for people who aren't Pistons fans, just like Sean Elliot's homerism is more noticeable to non Spurs fans. Blaha is an acquired taste. He's pretty good if you've followed the Pistons long enough.
I don't think anyone tops the Chicago Bulls' TV guys in terms of an over-the-top homerism call of a game.

Actually I called Elliott a homer as well. :wtf
Well, when Blaha said that Bowen "punched" Rip at the end of the game to send him to the line...that is when hit mute.

that's true. i think, when listening to other guys, you can tell how much of a homer they are based on how they react to the officiating :lol
-
Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
No offense, but I appreciate homerism when I watch the Spurs. I also appreciate the home fans in the ATT center beating the shit out of the opposition fans...
sorry, but that's just the way it is.
If you ain't first.... your last.
-
Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
To me...the homerism is the only thing I don't like about Elliott's broadcasting.
-
Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
I didnt see the game, they dont show it where I live, but how did Barry look? The box score looked good
-
Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
The refs were awful in the fourth. I felt like we were getting penalized for making hustle plays. So infuriating!
-
Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
Refs sucked on both sides in this game. I thought they were blind on some plays, but it was pretty evenly sucky.

Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
Let me help you, then. Perhaps you were talking about when Parker had to rest. When TP had to go to the bench, the Spurs suffered and had their lead trimmed. The first half with Jacque Vaughn and in the 4th with Beno. The Spurs stood around a bit too much and didn't move the ball very well against the zone. Fortunately, Parker played well and was key in the win.

Its a hometown broadcast, i want to hear it from THAt point of view.

Other than that. Give me the darn homecooking.
Screw "objective"

The contact wasn't questionable... the amount of time it took the ref to dislodge the whistle from his throat was. :madrun

Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
Whats wrong with Sean being a homer for a team that he's been apart of for so long? Besides don't they still pay him for doing the broadcast? And its not like he doesn't give respect to the opposing team. He always has nothing but good things to say about each team the spurs play. Like some one said earlier in the thread, he's the first one to criticize the team to.

That was me. :)
I like Sean and always have....he is funny as hell, I think he does a great job and I don't think he is as huge of a homer as people like to believe but I think at times he can be. I agree with you also about him being respectful of the other team. I have heard him compliment many opposing players many times.
I know that all team broadcasters can be homerish and I understand it. You essentially work for the team and are around them almost year-round. I understand the homerism and I know its part of the deal...I am just not a huge fan of that particular element of the job. I don't really even consider it "wrong"...Its really a personal preference thing, not a suggested course of action to anyone. :toast

My post really wasn't directed towards anybody. But as far as Elliot goes he's one of my all time favorite Spurs. :flag:

Mine too.
The week of the 99 finals, he signed a pic for me of him pointing to Mario Elie after the MDM. Its a copy of the Express-News sports page headline the next day...got it framed and hanging in the house....one of the nicest guys you will ever meet.

No....telling people to loosen up just because you don't agree with them is telling people what they should like and should do. As I explained...its a personal preference I have. You have yours, I have mine.
And when have I ever been hypocritical to or about you?

Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
Parker had 10 points as San Antonio quickly took control in the first quarter, leading by as many as 13. The Spurs' shooting clearly frustrated the Pistons, evidenced when Wallace got a technical early in the second for complaining. It was Wallace's 18th technical of the season, meaning he'll face another one-game suspension.
"I wish they would review the whole 48 (minutes)," said Pistons coach Flip Saunders. "If they're going to give him a 'T' for that, there should have been about four others called at least."
-------
so, Rasheed will be sitting on the bench on their next game against the Bucks?

I understand his frustration, but the calls were bad on both ends of the floor.

What you should have noticed is the difference between what happens when we interact with an intelligent, knowledgeable fan base (the Pistons fans) versus the drooling pack of Cubanoids.

everyone and everybody does that. is this an astounding revelation, punky? you were lighting up your keyboard after the golden state loss showing how much "it didn't effect" you. funny how you were "showing it" for long after the game was over. please, mav "fan" stick to the nba forum.

and bob ortegel is an unbiased commentator. compared to bob, I could listen to bill walton for the whole playoffs. again, punky, no astounding revelation here. all teams have homer commentators. get over it. stay in the nba forum.

Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
I actually thing Elliot is one of the most NON-homer basketball announces that announces for a TEAM.
If you announce for a team you are SUPPOSED to be a little bit of a homer... but he always is admitting that our players fouled... saying we shouldnt complain, that we dont have a gripe... says that opposing players got robbed etc...
-
Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
Refs called that game badly -- on both sides.
-
Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
Eddie Rush #62 was the ref who called the game so poorly (and in my opinion-- with an attempt to give the Pistons an advantage or at least the Spurs a disadvantage.) Does he always officiate games poorly or is it just against teams he doesn't like? I was at the game and then watched again at home. Why do they allow Refs with such poor skills continue? Rush's family connections?
-
Re: Damn Refs Nearly Cost Us the Game
Eddie has been noticeably odd on his calls over the years.

If you were talking about that straight-on three attempt...it was actually Parker defending. It didn't look like Tony even touched Billups. The newspaper said that Billups heard Pop telling TP to foul him, so when TP got up close and extended his left arm, Chauncey hoisted and tried to draw the foul.
