Spurs play boring baketball...blah..blah..blah...
Anybody else sick and tired of hearing this? It seems to be popular opinion of fans who don't watch the Spurs.
I know this has been discussed before, but do any of you think that this bias might work against the Spurs in their upcoming series against the Suns since their might be calls that go against them in tight ballgames?
Phoenix is a glamour team that the league would love to see in the finals, while the Spurs are the underappreciated club that puts everyone to sleep, except our loyal fans.
I, for one am hoping that the Spurs take care of business so the games don't come down to this.

I am, in fact, predicting a flop contest between Ginobli and Bell. I fear the Russian judges may favor Ginobli, with Bell being American and all, but Bell has to be the favorite going into the series. Bell was once again a league leader in faking ... er taking charges, with Ginobli not that far behind.
Perhaps Bell and Ginobli can just lay on opposite ends of the floor until a ref blows the whistle or someone in the 4-on-4 action scores a bucket.
Quick fact: Nash was actually the Suns leader in t(f)aking charges, so he has been spotted playing defense this year. Woo hoo! I would have to say he has mastered it by now.

Re: Spurs play boring baketball...blah..blah..blah...
I sometimes think this "boring" reputation is what costs the Spurs a lot of calls.
It's not only untrue, but unfair to tag them with some kind of label like that. Who in the world could watch Ginobili play with reckless abandon and call the Spurs boring? Who can watch Duncan toy with other superstars, and call the Spurs boring? Who can watch Bowen hassle superstar shooters night after night and call the Spurs boring?
Only someone who doesn't enjoy pure-team-oriented basketball.

Maybe the Spurs do play boring basketball...better to be boring and still playing than be flashy and get bounced in the first round.

Remember Barkley has maintained all year long, that the road to the Championship will have to be through the Spurs....And the Spurs, in his book, will come out on top.
The Spurs just go about their business and win......
And he picks them to win it all.

Re: Spurs play boring baketball...blah..blah..blah...
1) The Spurs are still boring. If you have seen one Spurs game, you have seen them all.
"Duncan holds the ball for eight seconds....and hits a bank shot for ten feet out".
"Ginobili hits the ground".
"Popovic calls another timeout"
"Horry hits a three"
2) That doesn't mean they don't win. Suns assistant GM David Griffith labeled them a "winning machine" which i would say is accurate.
-
Re: Spurs play boring baketball...blah..blah..blah...
What do you expect from people who are completely ignorant about basketball? I couldn't make up a better example than the above post. Hey Suns fan, do you think the all star game is the best game of the season? It has lots of dunks and lots of scoring with no team execution and no defense. Wow, what fun.

Re: Spurs play boring baketball...blah..blah..blah...
Boring is hearing all those denver and suns fans booing gino for his effort....Spurs didn't have an answer for carmelo but as a team they shut his team down we didn't boo him !
quit the whining and go check out re runs of amari doin push ups...coz he won't be doing em next series!

Re: Spurs play boring baketball...blah..blah..blah...
I think what ive noticed about spurs fans is that they know a little more about basketball than most. For me, I love watching the spurs because theyre SO incredibly good. After playing basketball with friends and then coming home and watching a spurs game, I just sit and stare in awe of how good they are, offense and especially defense. And its not just that theyre an nba team; theyre a lot better than most nba teams and you can see it. Thats plenty of entertainment for me

Re: Spurs play boring baketball...blah..blah..blah...
I think that it's people who haven't played organized, coached basketball, and learned the game, that don't appreciate the Spurs. Unfortunately this is a lot of people.
For example, I never played football, but I've sat and watched with people who have. They see, literally, 20 times more things than I do in a given play. They appreciate spacing, blocking, fakes, how the snap count is done, and all kinds of stuff like that.
This makes me understand what it's like for someone who never played except for pickup games maybe feels watching the NBA. There is so much going on that they do not even see, much less appreciate.
For example, one of the things I absolutely love about the Spurs is their defense in the paint. You saw that over and over again in the second half of the last game against Denver. Someone would drive the lane and the Spurs would converge on him and pressure the shot and the drive enough so that they'd miss 3 out of 4 times. It's not about spectacular blocks, it's about just bothering them enough to get their percentage down. Whenever I see that I just grin stupidly. I'm sure others watching say, "Wow, that player missed an easy layup." Or, worse, "Wow, the refs sure missed that foul."

Re: Spurs play boring baketball...blah..blah..blah...
LMFAO if you REALLY believe that as a Spurs fan you inherently have a greater knowledge of basketball.
Ive heard THIS argument before...
"If you don't like Spurs basketball than you don't know basketball and you only like And 1/All Star game blah blah blah blah"
Or how bout "People call the spurs boring cuz they don't get in trouble and don't have thugs and are nice guys".
Well Jordan, Magic and Bird stayed out of trouble and were nice guys and they still weren't boring.
The Bulls played great defense and they still weren't boring.
The Shaq/Bryant Lakers played defense and they still weren't boring.
Hell, even the Rockets were more fun to watch. Hakeem was amazing. INSPIRING!!!! Can't say the same thing about Duncan.
But what gets me the most is the way Spurs fans act like a bunch of jerks anytime anyone calls their team out.

Hey Spurs fan, what was YOUR FAVORITE Duncan highlight this year? Seriously, search through youtube and find me your favorite Duncan play.
Go on, find something that will REALLY impress me!!!
But don't be surprised if you get a sarcastic "WOOOOOOOOW" in return.

Basketball and highlights on BSPN is all about the offensive...One quick one that come to mind is that STOCK>>>>> (block and steal of YAO MING) !!
since it came at the defensive end......SUNS fans can't appreciate

Props to Nash for almost perfecting the flop. I'm serious...he finally realized that he's not big enough or strong enough to guard anyone so he learned the flop. As silly as it sounds, it makes the Suns a better defensive team.

What's amazing to me is that I call you out for not understanding the nuances of great basketball and you ask for highlights in return. Again, douche, the all-star game is full of highlights. Duncan doesn't throw down amazing dunks anymore, but a great block or good defense or a great pass is every bit as satisfying to me.
Not suprising, though, coming from a bandwagon troll who roots for a team that doesn't play defense.
I'll be waiting for your sarcastic comments about the Spurs parade, too. I'll send you a link to Amare's youtube videos to make you happy.

This is probably true for the following reason...The core fan base of all teams have a good knowledge of basketball. The Spurs probably have a bigger core fan base since it's the only pro team in town. Basically, there are just more hoops fans in San Antonio so there are going to be more fans that follow the game more closely. I would speculate it being similar for Jazz fans. If it's the only game in town you generally end up learning more about it even if you're not trying to. This is what I believe anyway.

So we agree then that Spurs are boring?
Btw - Show me a great Duncan block since your NEW argument is that defensive plays are exciting (even thought the spurs don't even average many steals or blocks).
Oh...and Duncan doesn't throw down great dunks anymore???
Feel free to find me your favorite Duncan play EVER!!! Rookie year if you want!! :lol :lol

I think that's exactly right. I've been listening to ESPN radio in Dallas and they are lamenting how hard a year it's been for Dallas sports fans, that now that the Stars and Mavs are gone in the first round they only have the Rangers until minicamps start. In San Antonio, there's nothing after the Spurs lose.
The ignorance of the "boring" label, even after the arrival of Ginobili and Parker, two of the most entertaining players in the entire NBA, still completely astounds me. It's almost as stupid as still trying to use the "soft" label. Again, though, what should one expect?

I've seen some "great" Duncan blocks just in the last month. He's so efficient at it when he blocks one that the ball stays in play (see Bill Russell) so it might not be flashy but it's what I'd consider "great".

One way basketball is boring to me. Sorry that you come onto a message board spouting ignorant opinion as fact and arguing when someone else has a different view. You are still looking for highlights of individual plays? Go watch the all-star game until Sunday. You'll then be fed a steady diet of great plays over the next five games as your team gets stomped. I look forward to your quiet departure out a side door like the Mavs and Nuggets fans before you.
But watch whatever you want. Some people like Jerry Springer, too.

Again...if I think Duncan is boring, then I must only like all-star games and Jerry Springer?
Why is it that people like Magic, Bird, Garnett, Pippen, Jordan etc. etc. never got the boring label and Duncan does???
Is it because everyone outside of San Antonio only likes All star games and Jerry Springer?

That must be it. Duncan's boring, just because someone said it. You bring immense basketball knowledge into this forum; you should be extraordinarily proud of yourself.
Garnett. LOL. I'm sure watching him sit on his couch watching the playoffs is riveting.

Re: Spurs play boring baketball...blah..blah..blah...
wow, i can't wait to hear studdermyer, stoddlcrier, notadmired...amare proclaim how he is dominating (by design) the spurs while losing basketball games. its funny how the boring trend as you call it is to let the superstar dominate and work the rest of the team. I guess it will be boring to see tony and manu run with phoenix, because if i recall the spurs beat you at your own game when we last met in the playoffs, the only difference was our guys play d. amare may dominate on offense but defensively he is non existent. he will get that great block into the 8th row celebrate pose, while tdunc will boringly block a shot to himself or a teamate and take it down court for that boring bank, layup or three. ya your right 95 pts per game boring. whats boring is that the spurs d take high scoring teams out of their offense, boredom is mistaken for frustration. so let the frustration begin, this will be a fun series.

I'm amazed that people are entertained by guys running up and down the floor hitting jump shots and NO DEFENSE. If that's your idea of entertainment, you should just go down to your local Dave and Busters. They have a basketball machine where you can make shot after shot, without any interference from those pesky defenders.

I don't get the whole boring thing. I've watched Detroit, Dallas, Lakers, Miami, Cavs, Phoenix, Denver, and the Spurs, and well, they're all "boring" in the sense that they do the same 4-5 things all the time.
The only team in the league that is truely reckless and "exciting" to watch is Golden State, every other team goes through the same motions.
What the heck makes a Kobe jumper more exciting than a Finley jumper? Nothing.
What makes a Nash layup more exciting than a Parker layup? Nothing.
The only exciting thing the Suns have going are Amare dunks and fast breaks, which the Spurs are seriously underrated in. We push the ball at every opportunity.

Nash penetrates, kickout pass to open perimeter shooter, score.
Now that's a play that Phoenix HARDLY EVER runs.
Wash, rinse, repeat. :sleep

The Suns are not a huge ratings team their best player in Nash is not that flashy. Amare is not on the level of a Lebron or Wade in terms of appeal. Only chance the league has for monster ratings in the finals is if Lebron and the Cavs get there and that is not likely to happen.

League would do well if Houston (Yao) somehow got to the finals. I don't see that happening though.

Re: Spurs play boring baketball...blah..blah..blah...
The Spurs are a proven multiple time NBA Championship Team. This cannot be boring unless you don't appreciate Championship Hoops.
In the Duncan years, the Spurs have been one of the most efficient teams in NBA history. I can see where the methodical success of Duncan and crew cutting opponents hearts out is frustrating to other teams and to the fans of other teams. But boring ... not if you know what the game is truly about.
Strong defense has been the Spurs primary MO in playing Championship Hoops. The Spurs executing all other teams with their superior defense has to be frustrating for the other teams and their fans. But boring, not if you know what the game if truly about.
The Spurs are from a small market AND continue to kick the collective @sses of the big market media darling teams. In my view this makes them boring ... to all the big market hacks, parrots and bandwagon fans that have little understanding of the game.
If the "Duncan" Spurs were in LA, Houston, Chicago, New York or Boston they would be applauded by the masses as one of the greatest teams of all time, and their style would be trend setting and exciting.
But since they are ours, they are boring. And we love it!

Most of what you said i agree with...but Kareem Abdul Jabbar played in a huge market and was still considered boring.
Penny Hardaway and Shaquille Oneal played in a tiny market and were considered exciting. So were the Kings a few years ago.
No...small market is just a lame excuse by Spurs fans.
-
Re: Spurs play boring baketball...blah..blah..blah...
Isn't saying the Spurs are boring analogous to saying the New England Patriots are boring?

Psst ... the Magic and the Kings never won shit. If they had kicked the collective @sses of big market teams the average big market bandwagon fan and big market hacks would have found them boring over time.
On your other point you sound a little confused. You have said Showtime was exciting with Magic and crew. Now you are selling Kareem as a big market player who was boring.
It appears you like it both ways. :dramaquee

It doesn't! Like I said, the Spurs are a "winning machine".
Then why do you care if the Spurs are "boring"? The only reason to bring it up is in an attempt to diss the Spurs. If the Spurs win but are boring...but you thing winning is the most important thing....it shouldn't matter how they win.

Do you also find it annoying that others believe all Spurs fans are intrinsically more knowledgable about basketball as well.
I find it annoying when anyone is so ignorant that the believe an entire fan base thinks and acts alike.

Re: Spurs play boring baketball...blah..blah..blah...
I've never understood the point of arguing that the Spurs are boring. The Spurs aren't boring to Spurs fans. And watching games throughout the season, it's rather clear that there are lots of Spurs fans around the country -- arguably, the bandwagon has grown considerably in the last few years.
Boring, ultimately, is an entirely subjective determination. Frankly, I find games that are nothing but offense to be boring. There's no suspense in wondering when and how the next basket will come; the suspense comes from waiting to see which team will make a mistake that will cost it an easy bucket. Why is that fun? To me, there's inherently more tension in a tight, low-scoring game in which every possession is critical to the success or failure of the teams playing. I think it makes for better basketball, too, because you're certain that at every moment, each team is giving everything it has on both ends of the floor. Frequently, with teams that are considered "entertaining," by whatever establishment defines that, you have the sense that the defensive end is a time for taking a break to get ready for the next offensive possession.
Perhaps I've been suckered into thinking that good, tight games without high-flying offenses and with dominating defenses are somehow entertaining. Somehow, I'm able to derive entertainment from watching NBA games without needing to see 20 dunks each night. Maybe I'm unsophisticated, or I suppose I might just not be hip enough to truly grasp what should entertain me. But, given the reactions that I see (and hear) when I go to games, it seems apparent to me that thousands of others share my sentiment.
Ultimately, I'll end where I began. Boring, like beauty, is entirely in the eye of the beholder. The value of the team I support or its worthiness as a potential champion does not and should not turn on the degree to which it is able to entertain the most common denominator. My team's worthiness as a potential champion turns exclusively on how well it executes the things that it must do to win games. If being a "winning machine" is boring, well then sign me up, because boring sure has become beautiful around San Antonio.

2) That doesn't mean they don't win. Suns assistant GM David Griffith labeled them a "winning machine" which i would say is accurate.
:lol I feel the same way about phoenix and nash (which he did the exact same thing in dallas) runs down to the end of the court then slices down the baseline and dishes it out. book it.
It's a tired play but it definately works.

I'm bored with the boring label. Do any of the Suns fans have any interesting smack to bring, or do we get to hear "boring" "soft" and "asterisk" for the next five games?

Re: Spurs play boring baketball...blah..blah..blah...
I've got no problem with the casual NBA fan finding Spurs Basketball boring. They don't have a rooting interest in the Spurs, and if they're not excited about a Tim Duncan bank shot or a Parker layup, that's a matter of taste.
It's when other fans try to use this as some kind of insult that confuses me... It's supposed to bother me that you don't enjpy watching Spurs Basketball? Why would I ever care as long as I enjoy it?
-

I agree. I am not saying that everyone everywhere should love the Spurs or their style of play but if you are going to diss a team...at least make sense. People who do that care less about winning then they do about a team looking good.

I just find it interesting that anyone claiming to be a basketball fan wouldn't enjoy well executed basketball with good defense and exciting players. Seriously, anyone that can say that Parker and Ginobili aren't fun to watch hasn't been watching (which is the point). "Ur tem iz boring. i dont watch them becuz there boring."

People who say the Spurs are boring and that run-and-chuck no-defense teams are entertaining are the same people who think the fights in Rocky movies are examples of good boxing.

Re: Spurs play boring baketball...blah..blah..blah...
Which would you rather have?
-Championships or early exits?
-Celebrating with your buddies when your team wins or sulking
when they lose?
-Championship parades or "wait until next year"?
Watching your team raise championship banners on opening night
or watching other teams raising banners on opening night?
I'm sure there are hundreds of thousands of fans of the 14 teams
who didn't make the playoffs who are a hell of a lot more
bored right now than Spurs fans.
All of you fans of the "flash and flair" teams can have the excitement
of watching your teams' early exits.
I'll take "boring" championship ceremonies any day of the week.

Ginobli and Parker make their share of circus shots adding some spice to the game for those video game junkies who want flashy plays.

I have a great cure for the Spurs "boring" reputation. They take their jerseys and replace "San Antonio" with "New York."
They would become instantly exciting. They would have multiple books written about them. In fact, they would be one of the most intriguing dynasties of all time!

Re: Spurs play boring baketball...blah..blah..blah...
Spurs are so boring i had to sign up for this boring forum. Why do you spurs fans want? You cant play incredible defense, half court basketball and abuse the paint and be classified in the same category of entertainment as the suns, warriors and nuggets.
I'm not saying the spurs aren't good, their excellent and all you spurs fan I am sure have fun watching your team with 50 games every year. But i rather watch a game with high flying dunks, alley oops and flashy passes then just watch my team win after game. Remember the game is for entertainment not just watching your team with games
Why do you think the Spurs are never in the music highlights? Tim Duncan's abuses the backboard, Robert Horry ends up in the corner somehow wide open for 3 and Bowen's head in incredibly shiny. The most interesting person on that team in Ginobli since he pushes the ball every chance he gets and seems to make a layup regardless of how hard he's hit on a foul or where he is on the court.
The spurs are like those guys who live a boring, conservative, serious life, then turn 50 and decide want to have fun by buying a convertible corvette and shades. I'm sure most of you spurs fan are those guys mentioned above.
I'm going to watch my Warriors play the Jazz in 30 Min
estimated final score 145 - 117. Thats what i call basketball
:clap

The Spurs might as well play in 3 piece suits.
P.S. the spurs jerseys are so boring and conservative. Do they even have an alternate jersey? I know they have the one retro jersey which looks pretty much like the regular season jersey. Maybe if they change their colors the game will look more exiting.
Spurs are the PC in (Mac vs PC) commercials.

Why not just make it the WWE? Seriously, if it's just about entertainment and who will bring the most viewers to their televisions, then why even bother with the notion of there being a real competitive element to the game? Preordain winners to ensure "exciting" matchups that will keep ratings high and do away with the notion of one team actually being better than another. That's what people want, isn't it?
-
Re: Spurs play boring baketball...blah..blah..blah...
I practicallly like how the Spurs play as a team. Maybe that mentality got into me that even when I play NBA live, 2k7 or arcade baskeball, I run a low-post play, waiting for the CPU to double team Duncan and then kick-out to the open shooter. :lol
