The Spurs commenced the game by playing spiritless ball, as though the suspensions of Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw had somehow depressed them. As though they'd be damned if they won and double-damned if they lost Game 5.
Meanwhile, the Suns were absolutely inspired.
As were the refs. The unofficial count had Phoenix getting the benefit of six highly dubious calls, while San Antonio was the beneficiary of only one. And how to explain what transpired with 11 ticks left in the game: Duncan was handed the ball and was about to make an inbounds pass when Mike D'Antoni suddenly raced on the court screaming and gesticulating like a madman. The refs responded by tooting their whistles and declaring a do-over. Why wasn't D'Antoni tagged with a technical?
Anyway, the Spurs stuck to their guns and salvaged a ball game that could easily have been lost. And the otherwise exhausted Suns will be instantly energized in Game 6 with the return of their banished warriors.
The only fitting conclusion for this remarkable series would be triple-overtime in Game 7.

The game was as fairly called as humanly possible, but yeah D'antoni went on the court thing left me scratching my head, and it was the second time he did that in the game, he was on the court a little earlier when Parker was dribbling upcourt late in the fourth, and the ref had to push him back, he was quite cloes to Parker.

The Spurs got another dubious call, the 3 pointer by Manu where Nash was jumping to the side of him and Manu locked his arm around Nash's shoulder and pulled him down on top of him to draw a foul and the refs bought it. Nash pointed it out right when he got up and replays showed it clearly. I'd call that pretty dubious.
It's irrelevant anyway, the Suns probably deserved a few more "dubious" calls after being robbed of Amare.

AJ was doing that all throughout the the GS-Mavs series too. Apparently Coach's can come onto the court without penalty now, even if the player with the ball almost runs into him (almost happened with AJ).

I wondered at the time what D'Antoni was thinking.
Still don't understand why he wasn't "T"d up for running onto the court during play.
And that "off the ball" foul that wasn't called that way was rather a dubious call also. That would have pretty much sealed the deal if it was called correctly.

I had never seen a coach come out that far. He was practically in the play.
took me a minute when see'ing it to realise what was going on. he was almost in front of the ref.
Was he trying to cause a diversion so he could have more time to set up for the inbounds play?
or just wasnt thinking?

I don't think anyone really wanted Amare and Diaw suspended. But: (1) we have no say in that; and (2) the rule was applied the same way it's always been applied.

Eh, I didn't check out the replay of that. I still think it's hard to argue or claim Nash was jumping to the side of Manu to contest a shot, he jumped right at him and basically his momentum was pretty much initiating contact. Whether Manu grabbed looked onto him to draw him closer in one huge motion after attempting a fading three...

D'antoni's antics were pretty annoying. But if they called the technical on him, other sides would be pissed at the zebras just the same. Anyway, Pop was treading close on a technical, at some point in the game. There were a lot of no-calls in this game on both sides so whatever.

A veteran player will often 'enhance' a foul to make sure the refs notice and call it. There is no question that Nash was running at Ginobili and couldn't stop his momentum into Manu or there wouldnt even be any discussion.

The reason he ran on the floor was because Tony Parker was all alone at the other end left unguarded. He knew that we could have essentially run the clock out. The sad thing is the refs let him get away with it.

I'm wearying of all this talk of "dubious" calls and microscopic review of officiating decisions. Nobody can ever prove that kind of thing objectively, because everyone comes to the situation with a bias of some sort. Even if one team did get the benefit of the whistle, what difference does it really make?
Teams don't win and lose games because of officiating -- make more baskets, get more rebounds, play better defense. Play the freakin' game. Play better than your opponent. Do that, and you'll win.

Honestly, I thought that this was the best reffed game of the entire series. Nothing really objectionable.
