Spurs don't have as many fans as the Suns
Spurs don't have as many fans as the Suns... or so some posts claim. But that is what makes Spurs fans so special. Because we believe in them from the beginning. And we have to put up with so much trash talking but we are still there for them because we see how good they are no matter who says otherwise!!! :toast :downspin: :ihit

Thats what the media wants you to believe. Here in Vegas which is a national/international destination, there are plenty of Spurs fans from around the country and around the world.
During the all star weekend, there were plenty of Spurs jersies as well as Cleveland and of course the Lakers. I think I saw one phoenix jersey the whole time.

We're just not as good at lobbing bottles at Suns to get camera time.

Re: Spurs don't have as many fans as the Suns
The SA Spurs have fans who grew up on the Spurs, since the team first moved to SA back in the early 70's, so thats close to 40 years of caring about the Spurs. Current Suns fans go back as far as when Steve Nash first came to the Suns, which goes way way way back a few years to 2004. 3 years of fandom compared to 40 years of rabid fandom.

You're joking right? The Suns right now aren't nearly as popular as they were back in the days of Charles Barkley and Kevin Johnson. We're not the Mavs here.

Re: Spurs don't have as many fans as the Suns
I can imagine Suns having more bandwagon fans, but I still think the Spurs have their fairshare of spreadout fans, so I don't see how it's an issue. We don't need the louder obnoxious fans who are swayed by the media hype anyway.

I think that has more to do with the NBA's popularity in general.

Probably. But I'm seriously dissapoitned in Suns fans as a whole. We used to be an amazing crowd, but now we're a bit listless (I was even told by a girl behind me to sit down when I was cheering, WTF is up with that?). While I'm sure the league as a whole is more popular, I'd probably think (and correct me if I'm wrong) that the Spurs have more fans now because of how much winning they're doing.

Re: Spurs don't have as many fans as the Suns
When I heard about the Suns fans honking at night at the Spurs hotel room, right away I thought the term "DESPERATE"!

These days most NBA fans reside outside the United States. I remember last year a NASCAR rain delay had a higher rating than an NBA matchup of the Lakers and Cavs, with two of the most hyped "stars" in the league. A freakin' NASCAR rain delay that was showing the prior weeks race that had already occurred. You think that happens to the NFL or even MLB? For some reason the NBA has chosen to market poorly and is now a shell of what it used to be in terms of fan base.

Totally agree. I don't give a shit if the NBA is in Spain, I want it better marketed and represented in the states. Probably the worst thing that the NBA is doing is constantly searching for the next Michael and hopelessly hyping individual players. Did they totally forget about why the NBA was so popular? Sure there were stars like Bird and Magic, but they were always the consumate team players and the teams had specific identities. The fact remains that team basketball like Phoenix, Detroit, and San Antonio is much more entertaining then just having four people watch Dwyane Wade drive to the hoop and draw a foul. I think that it's time that David Stern needs to pass the torch.

I've hated the way the NBA has marketed domestically for years. It's like they see the NFL's dominance and have given up. The hip hop image they tried to embrace a decade ago or so completely blew up in their face, and to me they have missed the boat completely by not marketing the team ball concept and by not continuing with explaining the game to fans who don't know the subtle details of the game. If you think about it, the NFL does a fantastic job of explaining the game through ESPN shows like NFL Countdown, NFL Live, and the pregame shows. They actually go through and break down certain plays pertaining to the coming weeks matchup and give the casual fan information and a feeling that they are informed and know what's going on. The average NFL fan can recognize things like a zone blitz, nickel and dime coverages, and other strategies of the game thanks to the NFL's superior marketing.

The Celtics fans used to do that back in the day. I think it's the only clever thing the Suns fans have done. Throwing bottles, calling in bomb threats and lobbying to have the rules changed to benefit them are weak.

Re: Spurs don't have as many fans as the Suns
In the Spurs vs Nuggets & Suns playoff games that has been aired on my country's local TV this month, the Spurs always get the most vote of winning the game & series by casual BBall fans who's interviewed at the pregame talk show. :)

Re: Spurs don't have as many fans as the Suns
What is this thread about?
I bet half of Austin if not more, all the way down to the tip of Texas are all Spurs fans. That pretty much makes up half the state of TX.
-
Re: Spurs don't have as many fans as the Suns
Austin is probably 2% Spurs fans.

Re: Spurs don't have as many fans as the Suns
I know plenty of Brazilians who like the Spurs.
