Spurs License Plates Not An Option
SAN ANTONIO -- Like a lot of San Antonians these days, Craig Kindle is trying to find creative ways to show his support for the San Antonio Spurs.
Recently when Kindle got a notice in the mail to renew his license plates, he thought about getting some specialty plates of his favorite NBA team.
But to his disappointment, Kindle found out his only option for specialty plates of a Texas NBA team was of the Dallas Mavericks.
"I was pretty much shocked that we were left off the list," Kindle said in an interview with KSAT 12 News.
So why aren't Spurs specialty license plates available?
The Texas Department of Transportation requires professional sports teams to pay a $15,000 deposit to have specialty plates printed. The team can recover their deposit once 3,500 plates are sold.
But after checking with other professional sports teams around Texas, Spurs officials found out that most teams never reach the quota and decided to pass on the specialty plates.

. . . and Spurs fans wonder why the Spurs are the only team that does't give away free t-shirts.

I live in Oklahoma now and for some reason you're not required to have a front license plate here. Hence, I bought a Spurs one!

Re: Spurs License Plates Not An Option
Are asterisks available as characters on personalized plates?

Good luck on finding one. If you see one, do let us know, huh.

I would totally buy a Spurs plate.

Man the Spurs are about the stupidest team in pro-sports when it comes to marketing, and have been since day 1.
Did they ask those other teams how many championships they have won recently? Did they ask them if there are any other pro teams in their towns?
IF the other teams go and jump off a bridge are the Spurs going too as well, or some shit like that?
Bash Cuban all you want, but at least he knows how to sell his team to his public.

Yeah, no kidding. Make it an option and everyone in this damn town would have a Spurs license plate. I'd take the over on 3,500 plates in the first month.

How much does it cost to get specized plates? I'd get some Spurs ones too.
The Spurs logo is one of the best looking logos in Sports right now, IMO. What a shame they waste it.

Re: Spurs License Plates Not An Option
my god, they have one for dolphins

wtf holt?
-
Re: Spurs License Plates Not An Option
The other question I would ask is...why do the Spurs have to pay money so people can pay money to get their plates?
TDOT aren't exactly a bunch of Einsteins either.
-
Re: Spurs License Plates Not An Option
How did the dolphins come up with $15,000?

Last time I checked it was something like $30. But that was a couple years ago.

Kinda hard to believe that you can't get Cowboys or Longhorns plates...
I know they could sell 3500 Longhorn plates in Austin.

It's just a dummy safeguard to avoid having to make a mold for every organization in Texas. However, I doubt they added Holt's cheapness to their equation.

Re: Spurs License Plates Not An Option
shit I'd buy a 2nd car just so I could purchase more than 1 spurs plate.
damn Holt is cheap.
I can name 13 people that I know IRL that would jump at the chance to have a Spurs license plate.
hell... my next car is going to be black just so it matches better with my Spurs decals :lol
-
Re: Spurs License Plates Not An Option
You can even get Rangers plates, but no Spurs? Geeez.
-
Re: Spurs License Plates Not An Option
What is a Dallas Star and how the hell do they have plates before the Spurs?
-
Re: Spurs License Plates Not An Option
I think we can all agree that this is an outrage of the highest order...and a plain and simple case of fan mistreatment and unappreciation(?) on the part of the Spurs...
-
Re: Spurs License Plates Not An Option
Spurs are cheap as hell
welcome to last *since Holt owned the team*

My jeep would look damn good with that logo on the plates.

Yeah it's a continuing outrage, since so many of us have already checked to see if they were available on our own. :lol
Like I said, now that it's been brought up, maybe it will happen. Post a picture when you get yours.

This is nothing. Holt put Holt's Cat to sleep because it was eating too much.

If the Mavericks have one...

Re: Spurs License Plates Not An Option
The lack of a Spurs license plate comes up about once every other year. Still nothing.
Then again, this team has needed a Long Three for who knows how long . . .

Re: Spurs License Plates Not An Option
cheap bastards. this is why i never believe the spurs account of contract situations.
-
Re: Spurs License Plates Not An Option
I can see it now, a petition getting about a 100,000 signatures, then after the mold is made, they sell 500.
I'm also pretty sure that it is 15k per year, otherwise they wouldn't worry about selling 3,500 to get the deposit back.
-

I thought the same thing. The season ticket holders should make a deal with the team. They have more pull than the rest of us.
-
Re: Spurs License Plates Not An Option
If someone was passionate enough about it, they could probably go to a bank and get the bank to accept deposits for the plates. Of course one or more of the news stations would have to endorse it to raise public interest. Kind of unorthodox, but it has been done to raise money, albeit for more worthwile cases. It would be sad if SA could not get 3,500 plates, much less the surrounding area.
-
Re: Spurs License Plates Not An Option
3500?thats nothing . they would probably sell half of those, if not all, in Laredo and DelRio alone. :rolleyes
-
Re: Spurs License Plates Not An Option
Funny that you can't get a Spurs plate in Texas but you can get one in New York!??
I think this is the one that David Stern has:

I think that was me. When I asked, the answer I got was pretty much what was posted here about the $15,000 thing. Who knows, when we get the fourth trophy, maybe it'll happen.

Re: Spurs License Plates Not An Option
I feel lucky enough just to get a Wheaties Box.
-
Re: Spurs License Plates Not An Option
I renewed my plates 2 weeks ago and they told me the same thing, the only option was the Mavericks. :lol
3500 would sell here easily. Stupid marketing team, as usual.

$15k isn't that much really if it's a one-time fee. Plus they get to recoup some of it.
I wonder if the NBA gets a cut for each plate sold.
Hell, Elson and Barry should pay for it to even out their lack of contributions this post-season.
-
Re: Spurs License Plates Not An Option
For those of you, like me, who live in a state that doesn't require a front plate, you can get this one...nice!

You guys aren't going to believe this...but I have the longhorn logo on my own damn plates and didn't even realize it lol. I didn't even ask for them...not quite sure how I wound up with them.
I thought I had seen those somewhere lmao :nerd
Still...now that I know I can't have Spurs plates...I'm extremely bothered by it.
