Who is worse - Tafoya, Gray or Sager?
Answer: they all SUCK.
Tafoya is such a bitch. "Tim, I have to ask..." Um, no you don't. You know he's not going to give you a soundbite. You don't have to ask. We're all sick of the taint talk, and what do you think Tim is going to say, "Yeah, there's an asterisk next to the series."
What a stupid fucking bitch. This is why people hate the media.
As for Sager and Gray, I'm sure one is a goat-fiddler and the other a necrophiliac, and I think they were separated at birth. They are definitely Sith, not sure who's the lord (ie pitcher) and who's the apprentice (ie. catcher) though.
:devil :lmao

Re: Who is worse - Tafoya, Gray or Sager?
Oh my God. I can't even begin to complain about the commentary/ tiny bit of post game on ESPN. It sucks worse than thinking about a game 7.
Oh and the one after game 2..."I don't mean to be nosy steve..but how is your nose?"
-
Re: Who is worse - Tafoya, Gray or Sager?
Gray by a mile! Guys a fucking little prick!
-
Re: Who is worse - Tafoya, Gray or Sager?
Sager for trying to keep the spirit of Howard Cosell's clothing and hair alive.
-
Re: Who is worse - Tafoya, Gray or Sager?
Tafoya's continued employment baffles me

Sager. his clothes are gay.

Indeed.
The best sideline commentators are EX-PLAYERS. They have a rapport with the players and don't ask suck-up questions, or unnecessary digs like Tafoya does. Just look at Chuck and the boys, they actually know what they're talking about.
Get Jalen Rose and Reggie Miller out there. Throw in John Amaechi if you want a bit of spice! :lmao

Jalen Rose for sideline reporting, Reggie Miller for color commentary, and John Amaechi for fashion tips.

Why? Because all three of the aforementioned wankers INSULT the people they interview by asking loaded questions.
After the game today, she insulted Tim by asking the "isn't it true that this series is tainted" question. She's a media-whore just like Sager and Gray. If any of them had integrity, they'd come up with decent questions, but because they care more about their own egos than the people they interview, they ask these loaded questions.
Also, notice how in most of these interviews the interviewer speaks more than the interviewee? These people are glamour-whore vampires!!! Good reporters ask simple, well-framed questions and let the subject answer. These people wouldn't know an interview if it hit them in the face.

Jim Gray rules for throwing cold water on Pete Rose on national television.
-
Re: Who is worse - Tafoya, Gray or Sager?
i guess when people are happy they need something to complain about
-
Re: Who is worse - Tafoya, Gray or Sager?
What's great about Jim Gray is that if he'd been at the game he wouldn't have talked to Timmy he'd have made a beeline for one of the Suns. "Amare, are you disappointed in yourself for not knowing being able to stay on the bench? Do you feel you let your teammates down by not knowing the rules?"
-
Re: Who is worse - Tafoya, Gray or Sager?
I don't think Tafoya is that bad! I think she does a prety good job, plus she is hot!
-
Re: Who is worse - Tafoya, Gray or Sager?
I don't think the question Tafoya asked Tim was meant to be malicious, and I really don't see what valid argument anyone has for saying she is a bad commentator, other than she isn't an ex-player.
-
Re: Who is worse - Tafoya, Gray or Sager?
If Michelle hadn't asked about the series being tainted she would have been fired by ESPN.
-
Re: Who is worse - Tafoya, Gray or Sager?
Gray is a heartless bastard, though his crazy questions always make me laugh at the awkward situation that results.

He used to work for Don King on Showtime fights, and he used to ask tough questions to boxers, and never flinched at all. That's why I was so surprised to see how shaken he was after the malice at the Palace. I just love how he completely submarined Rose. He gets a free pass from me for life for that.

What did Tim say to Suzy Colbert?
My DVR stopped recording right after she asked him if the win was "tainted". I don't know how he responded.
It's fucking bullshit that Tim (of ALL people) should have to answer such a stupid-ass question.
-
Re: What did Tim say to Suzy Colbert?
Michelle Tafoya interviewd Duncan and Duncan was Duncan quick to give praise and held back criticisms, cool and composed. He said that it wasn't tainted, a hard fought battle, and unfortunaley(sp) it had to happen.
If I was Duncan I would just walk out of the interview.

Thanks. Yeah, I think Tim should've just walked away. I don't know why I thought it was Suzy Colbert. I get all those dumbasses mixed up.

Hell no. You're not the only one. Personally, I think she's damn HOT!

Re: What did Tim say to Suzy Colbert?
yeah...then tafoya said "Fair enough"....as if tim was trying to dodge the question...
that kinda annoyed me, but not much because afterall, spurs had just clinched the series.

Re: What did Tim say to Suzy Colbert?
I started a thread about this after the game, but it seems like most people thought I was being unreasonable.

I will state also that Tafoya, Gray and Sager do this all the time, not just this once. It is their modus operandi...

Re: What did Tim say to Suzy Colbert?
As I remember he said something like this:
"Do you think this series is tainted" - idiot reporter
"You know, I have nothing to do with that. The league made a decision and it was unfortunate, but I just play the game." - Duncan

Re: What did Tim say to Suzy Colbert?
What's so wrong with asking the question that is on the minds of everybody watching? Everybody and their mother, even though they "knew" what Tim was going to say, still wants to hear it. Question asked, question answered. Reporters aren't to assume anything, much less the answer to a question such as this one on the minds of the viewing audience.
Did she continue to pursue it once Tim responded? If she did, then fine, chastise her for beating a dead horse, but if she didn't, what's the harm?
-
Re: What did Tim say to Suzy Colbert?
I thought it was a reasonable questions, and TD gave a great answer. Is everyone supposed to be Spurs homers?

No harm in asking-same as there is no harm in some people feeling that Michelle's question was an unnecessary and/or stupid one.
It's a matter of judgement calls, personal taste and opinion- something everyone is entitled to.
Michelle had her say and now we're having ours.
-
Re: What did Tim say to Suzy Colbert?
Yeah he basically said it was an NBA decision and that he had nothing to do with it...said it was unfortunate.
I think the first part is totally missed by alot of people....as if some how it's the Spurs' fault that Phoenix players did what they did and that it's the Spurs' fault that the league reacted the way they did. Bullshit question to ask anyone other than the League or players who commited the suspensible act.
-
Re: What did Tim say to Suzy Colbert?
I don't think it was a baloney question.
Michelle thought that was "the story" and went after it.
I would have focused on another subject- this I know because never once has it occurred to me that the series WAS tainted- but as a journalist that might have been a mistake since the tainted angle is a hot topic right now.
-

Had her say? I fail to see where she injected personal opinion into her question.
But you're right, it's your opinion, but I feel the "dumbass" and "modus operandi" comments are over the top.
To those of you calling them that, what questions would you like me to ask of the Missions and Cardinals this week when I'm writing my stories? What questions would you not like me to ask?

A team just closed out a tough, emotional playoff series and you ask them if it's tainted? Stuipd and disrespectful question. Let the pinheads in the studio and the fans on the forums/radio shows discuss this IQ lowering scenario. Don't insult one of the best players in the league after closing out a series. :nope :hang :td

I am saying that as a journalist she is writing or interviewing to get HER
story.
As long as she is ethical and doesn't make stuff up or plagerize, she can put whatever information she wants into her story.
That is the freedom I give her.
My freedom is to listen or not listen to her interview and like or not like it.
People or agreeing or disagreeing with Michelle does not make her less of a journalist. She had a story to share and told it. I listened and have formed my own opinion on said story- that's the true freedom of the press.

So you'd rather the commentators speculate about what the star player of the team thinks rather than getting his opinion and then analyzing his statement?

I don't see it as ridicule.
I honestly feel that if everyone always likes every story you put out, you are probably NOT a good journalist.
You can't please everybody every time.
On the same token, since everyone's opinions, taste ( in writing style etc) and temperments are so different, it is unfair to expect people to be pleased every time.

Again...the lesson taught to journalists is:
Never Assume.
The only time it's "accepted" is when it's widely recognized as fact. IE: Is water wet?
Just think about it: What if, for some crazy, one-millionth of a percent chance, Tim said he thought the league was wrong or that he thought the win might be tainted. And what if that question had never been asked?
-

I'm sorry. I lost you.
I think we agree that journalists have a responsibility to go out and get stories.
And I understand that is not an easy job.
Where I feel we differ is that you seem to be implying that by virtue of my not liking a story or even reporter ( and for the record that is not at all the case with Michelle) and saying so makes me an illiterate ingrate.
-
Michele Tafoya is a Bitch!
after the game she of course sings the same old song and asked Tim Duncan about how the suspension of Amare and Diaw may have changed the series it seemed to me like she was trying to get a rise out of Timmy and of course to no avail Timmy answered something along the lines of "I had no control over that that was the NBA and its all over now it's done" Tafoya replied sarcastically with "ok fair enough" and could Mike Breen sound anymore disappointed after the game good thing I saw the game on FSN with Sean Elliot it's a shame it will be the last game with Sean commentating this season now I will have to put up with ESPN's half ass ed commentating. Maybe I bitch to much maybe I should be more happy because the spurs are going the the west finals but I have nothing else better to do than bitch but then again Craig Sager was pretty bad when he Interviewed Finley about the Horry foul

Matchups? Agree to disagree, I guess...but I think you'd be hard-pressed to tell me that the question (and Tim's answer, whatever it may be) wasn't on the mind of most of the viewing audience.

I'm pretty sure it was the Apr. 2006 fight between W. Klitchko and Chris Byrd, LM was refering to Byrd. Classic moment.

Angel, I think you are missing the point. It's not that she asks the question, it's that she LOADS it up with opinion first. Good journalists ask unloaded questions, flat questions not loaded with the journalist's or anyone else's opinions. Good journalists keep their egos and opinions out of the way when interviewing, something Tafoya, Gray and Sager are incapable of because it's all about THEM, and about CONTROVERSY.
eg. "Tim, do you think this series has been tainted by the Horry incident?"
vs "Tim, many experts believe the series has been tainted by the Horry incident and claim that the Spurs will now not be true champions even if they win the NBA - how do you feel about that?"
If she had asked the former question I'd have no beef, but she didn't, she asked something much closer to the second question.
Dammit, ESPN have taken down the Tafoya interview or I'd show you what I mean by quoting the exact way she asks the question.

Good journalists do not have opinions! The first tenet of journalism is to be impartial!
Labelling Tafoya, Gray and Sager "journalists' is an insult to real journalism. They are gossip-mongers, no more.
Proper journalists lay out the facts, ask the right questions, and let the audience decide for themselves.
Unfortunately, journalism today is so blurred with entertainment that few people know the difference.

I have no strong feelings one way or the other about Michelle's question. I just feel like people should be allowed to think about the interview as they do- i.e everyone is entitled to their ( right or wrong) opinion.
Oh, and I'm not having a go at you Angel, just explaining a point in my own thread over here... ;)

Re: What did Tim say to Suzy Colbert?
Without seeing the interview for myself...the first question is bad because she asks it as a yes/no, but I still don't see where she injected her opinion into it by asking "Do you think...?"
-
Re: What did Tim say to Suzy Colbert?
She doesn't just say "do you think", she prefaces the question with information that biases the question towards a particular set of answers, and that's why Tim basically said "That's the NBA's problem, and fuck you".
Tim is admirable though - he stood there and listened to the question for what must've been 30secs (she framed it agonizingly poorly) - before giving her a clipped answer and getting out of there.
As I said, we are all so used to terrible journmotainment that no-one even notices the horrible crap that passes for journalism today.

...or a strip club.

Re: What did Tim say to Suzy Colbert?
My problem isn't with the questions. As pop would say, "I would do the same thing if I had your [reporters/journalists] jobs."
What annoyed me a little bit was her "Fair enough" response after Tim's thoughtful, honest answer.
I hate when journalists or reporters refuse to believe the person they're interviewing and show their utter disappointment when they don't get the answer they're fishing for or want to hear.
"Fair enough"....It's not fair enough that you have that job and some more qualified, less annoying person is doing something else. Like...he gave you a damn answer. He should be in the damn locker room with his teammates but he stopped just to talk to you and answer your (pointed) question. Don't fuckin' call his answer "Fair enough." It's extremely fair, bitch.
Shoot, I would loooove Suzy Kolber...I'm sure she knows something about basketball. If not, I'm pretty sure she's a competent researcher. She's hot.
Rachel Nichols would be fine too (although I think she's over-rated). Seriously, she doesn't seem nearly as annoying and even if she slips up, her looks would make it less annoying. (I know all this about looks may be a bit superficial but it's very true, and is a big factor in tv journalism/reporting...and Suzy Kolber IS hot.)

I was speaking about the opinions of the readers.

had to pay for that journalism school somehow

Angel, I think you are missing the point. It's not that she asks the question, it's that she LOADS it up with opinion first. Good journalists ask unloaded questions, flat questions not loaded with the journalist's or anyone else's opinions. Good journalists keep their egos and opinions out of the way when interviewing, something Tafoya, Gray and Sager are incapable of because it's all about THEM, and about CONTROVERSY.
She was doing an interview, not a research paper.
I like it when reporters for television have a conversation with a player. For me, it makes the interview they are conducting more real to life and interesting. I would hate for being nitpicky about technicalities to interfere with the fun of watching sports broadcasting. Wouldn't you?
As long as reporters use proper grammar and etiquette in their interviews, and don't interview people in the middle of the game ( :lol), I am satisfied.

Re: What did Tim say to Suzy Colbert?
She is a great sideline reporter you spurs fans should not be so critical.

Free Suzy Kolber...
Rachel Nichols would be OK (slightly over-rated like umm...shawn marion???? but still ok...better than Tafoya, Gray, or Sager)
I wouldn't mind Ahmad Rashad or Bob Costas at all. Bob Costas...reminds me of NBA on NBC...

gonna post that song at every opportunity...

Re: Who is worse - Tafoya, Gray or Sager?
Gray. Why? Why is he trying to be a journalist? It is entertainment. Leave the journalism to the newspapers.
Nothing wrong with Tafoya. Sager is a breath of fresh air. I like Sager, in fact. Because of the clothes. It is amusing. He doesn't push it when interviewing, but isn't a complete pushover. I liked Tafoya's interview with Tim, a little rougher than Sager, but not being a prick like Grey. Greay is like Vescy, I don't know why they have jobs.

Re: Who is worse - Tafoya, Gray or Sager?
I would say sager because he doesnt work for ABC

Well, their loaded questions, which take 3/4 of the interview to ask, let alone the fact that the interviewers are really trying to trap the interviewee into giving them a controversial soundbite, piss me off so much that it reduces my enjoyment of the telecast! So, no, can't agree.
Anyway, what I have realised is that these people ARE NOT journalists. They are glorified gossip columnists given a microphone and told to dig some dirt, so I guess I have to let them off the hook. However, there should be a disclaimer on the screen while they do their interviews which states:
"Attention! This is not journalism. The opinions of the interviewer will be interposed on the interview." :lol
I'm obviously the only one who feels that way so I'll leave it at that.

See this is what I was advocating- opinions and discussion. Caring and sharing.
Yes I am deliriously tired. :)
I was tired when I went to sleep- ended up doing so too early which is why I am awake at this hour when I have to be awake again by 8:15 am. :dizzy

Re: What did Tim say to Suzy Colbert?
They are just commentators and sideline reporters, not investigative journalists or even writers. I didn't see anything wrong with the question she asked and I didn't think she injected her own opinion in it. Considering it was the topic on every website, newspaper, tv, radio broadcast in the country that was covering the series, I wouldn't have expected her to NOT ask about the series being tainted.
