Retirement of player's numbers

Duncan is a lock. Considering Bowen is considered the best perimeter defender in the league, and has been HUGE for the Spurs in their championships, it's difficult to say that he doesn't deserve it. If Manu and le Pinceau play out their contracts with the Spurs, that would give them about a decade on this team, which is being considered a dynasty now. If they win it all this year, that makes 3 titles, with maybe one or two more legit chances. It's hard to not retire their numbers. Horry, as big as he has been for the Spurs, hasn't really played long enough (would be 5 years after next year) with the Spurs, but you never know. You might as well retire them while you can... you never know what's going to happen after Duncan retires.

There is very little chance he retires as a Spur; they should retire his number anyway.

George Gervin didn't retire as a Spur.

Having a statue of Pop outside the main entrance to the AT&T Center would help the crowd flow. No one would walk up to the doors under Pop's watch. You hustle when Pop is watching, or you don't go at all.

We are a long way from this happening but if you retire Elliott, you have to retire the big 3 at a minimum.

Bruce has to be considered as well.

If Pop ends up winning 6 championships, maybe the Spurs can retire #6 for Pop.

Parker, Duncan, Ginobili, Bruce are all locks.

First of all, you retire a number when the player usually goes in retirement. I can see Duncan and Bowen retiring as spurs. I can even see Ginobili being an spurs till the end of his career. I'm not sure about Parker, he is still young and he probably has about 6-7 more years of prime game. Horry could be in if Lakers opt out. I don't see the rockets retiring Horry though.

I don't think that the Rockets will retire Horry's number. I have the sense that Rockets fans think Horry was a lazy player and a waste of potential. I may be wrong, but I think the Rockets thought Horry would become a perennial All-Star for them.

There's nothing that says that a player's number can only be retired by the team that he last plays for. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's #33 is retired by both the Bucks and the Lakers. Wilt Chamberlain's #13 is retired in both Philly and LA. Julius Erving had his number retired by both the Nets and the Sixers. Bob Lanier had his #16 retired by both the Bucks and the Pistons. Clyde Drexler has his #22 retired in Portland and Houston. Charles Barkley's #34 is retired in both Phoenix and Philadelphia. I'm sure there are others, but those are certainly some very prominent examples.

Even if Parker leaves San Antonio at some point, his work here is probably worthy of making sure that nobody else ever wears #9 here again. If he plays both of the next 2 games, Parker will (along with Bowen) join Tim Duncan and David Robinson as the only Spurs to have appeared in 100 playoff games -- not an insignificant accomplishment. In Parker's case, he's 3rd in franchise history in playoff points and has a decent chance to catch David Robinson for 2nd place in the next couple of seasons. He's 2nd in playoff assists, and can pass AJ for 1st with another couple of good playoff runs. He's got 2 all-star appearances and counting and has been a vital cog to a team that has legitimate dynastic expectations.

If Parker does stay along for a few more championships, and then leaves, at the end of his career he can always sign a one year 'retirement' contract, to retire as a Spur...it's what Emmitt Smith did with the Cowboys at the end of his career.

Great points. I think Parker is taken for granted around here.

They should give Coach Pop #1. I laugh at players that request that number. I get the impression they think they're better than they actually are.
