Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
For me, it would have to be last year against the Mavs. That was our chance, if never in the future, to repeat and it came down to one critical possesion and other key calls during the series. That one hurt more than getting the broom by the Lakers in 00 and all the other exits. What about you guys?

04 versus LA.
Had em down 2-0 and should have won game 4.
Had that game won at halftime.

1. 2004 (.4)
2. 2001 (Sweep)
3. 1979 (Losing 3-1 lead to Bullets)
4. 1995 (Hakeemed)
5. 2006 (Enough Said)
6. 1994 (Maloned)
7. 1990 (Strickland's no look pass)
8. 1983 (Mitchell misses 15 footer that would have taken us to game 7 at Forum)

Yup, yet another opportunity to get back to back. I feel we would of beaten minny and been in a dog fight with Detroit, but would of come out victorious.

Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
1995 will always be #1 for me, losing against Houston after winning 62 games.....
In the Tim Duncan era, probably 2001 for having the best record in the NBA and losing our 2nd leading scorer in round 2, and then getting embarrassed by the Lakers by an average of 22 ppg margin of defeat for the series. Lost by 39 pts and 29 pts in the last two games. I just hated the fact that they flat out quit with no heart after the first 2 games
2006 is a close 3rd

Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
dallas by far
the lakers series sucked from '04 but the better team won
last year we literally handed the mavs that game

You can blame Juwan Howard and the dirty ass Mavs for that. They knew their team was fucking garbage so they tried taking the Spurs down with 'em. I'm glad their pathetic fluke franchise hasn't won shit.

I agree Spurs should be going for a 3 peat here if only Manu had not fouled Dirk.

Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
1995 was the worst emotionally, by far. I was twelve, and that series was the first time I ever attended a playoff game. David Robinson was the MVP and we had the best record. I made a poster with a big drawing of David dunking with "50 MVP" written under it to take to the game. I don't think it occurred to me back then that we could lose.
2006 was pretty tough as well. 2004 would have been a lot worse if the Lakers hadn't lost to the Pistons. (The Pistons will always have a special place in my heart for beating them and keeping Malone from getting a ring.) None of the others really compare to those three.

06 lame calls on last plays in the dieing secs of every game

Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
The 2006 Spurs, while they lost a winnable series, did not ever quit. They showed a lot of poise and heart in defeat. In 2004, 2001, 1996, 1991 - the Spurs did not show poise in defeat. 2004 was the best of those teams - by far - so in that sense 2004 was the most disappointing.
-
Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
The Spurs should have one in 1995, big choke job. 2001 shouldn't be on any list since we were clearly overmatched.

.04 lakers was the worst for me.

1) 2001 - utter annihalation leaving Duncan looking like a schoolgirl
2) 1995 - dominant team with 5-0 at his peak; so close to first title
3) 2004 - up 2-0 looking like a lock to defend title, then get swept
4) 2006 - worst officiated series; screwed by seeding & scheduling (game 1)
5) 2002 - won 1st game, then swept; had 4th qrt lead in all 5 games
(My memory doesn't go past the Barkley buzzer beater in '93)

I know! Watching malone with a hurt leg on the sideline with that defeated look on his face! That is a top 5 non Spurs moment of my NBA watching life!
-
Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
.04 Lakers... after Duncan hit that shot I was so happy, then the Fisher shot... it just drained everything out of us and the players.
Mavs loss doesn't hurt as much any more, they were a hell of a team that year and it was pushed to the limit, game 7 in OT, can't go much further than that.
I wasn't really into watching basketball until 2002 or so, I can't really speak for the remander of the moments listed aside from reading or watching clips of them, but they still hurt a bit to see.
-
Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
Definitely 2004. I was so confident that series, and so hyped that we would be the "All Star Team". Then we were playing "ho-hum" that game 5 I was thinking we would lose but hoping we wouldn't. Timmy brought me my hope with that last second shot and I was crying with joy, then a mere 0.4 seconds later I was crying with unconsolable saddness. Ugh that was a BITCH!
-
Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
.4 was the worst, but the BS foul on Gino last year was a close second.
-
Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
I've got to go with 06 as well. I mean you really couldn't even get mad at Manu because he did so much for us. I remember I literally just sat there staring at the television in disbelief. I could not believe we lost that freakin game. What made it so bad was that it was to Cuban and Dallas. :devil
-
Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
Honestly, I thought the Spurs were overmatched in the series. Our defense did not get it clicking.
But I agree, Manu's foul was the worst.
-
Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
'04 definitely. Not because of Fishers shot as much as the fact that they still had game 6 and 7 and just fell apart. That team just didn't have the killer instinct that this team has.
At least '06 went to 7 hard fought games. I don't blame Manu's foul because they still had overtime to win it.
-
Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
in order:
79 bullets
01 lakers
91 warriors
95 rockets
81 rockets
90 blazers
06 mavs
04 lakers
93 suns
02 lakers
but they are all disappointing, especially the ones that the spurs didn't make the playoffs.

What about Barkley shutting down the arena?

Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
Last year, because you don't foul a driving player when you're up 3, at home in a game 7.
I'm still pissed at Manu for doing that...frick'n inexcusable, and it cost us a championship.
Next, there's Strickland's infamous pass.
My first heartbreak was the infamous call against Whopper that cost us the game against the Bullets. I was a freshman in High School at the time, and I cried like a baby.
But Manu's foul has to be the topper for me...dude, what were you thinking? Still can't and never will get over it.
-
Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
Last years Dallas Game 7 was the nail through the heart for me. Closely followed by .4
I still cannot imagine what on earth manu was thinking to contest that shot by dirk being up 3 with so little time.
He wasn't even in the damn play but came flying from the wing to contest it. I seriously think i yelled louder than anyone in the fuckin arena when i saw him going after dirk on that drive. I wanted to go choke him...seriously...just put evryone on the three point line and let them have the paint all to themselves and you win the DAMN GAME!!! ARGHHHH!~!!!!!
-
Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
I think the 00 year was the worst for me. Had TD not injured his knee, the Spurs would have held off the Lakers' start of their mini dynasty by one year. The Spurs were clearly better than LA that year and would have repeated, had TD missed that Sacto game where he hurt the knee.
-
Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
Jesus Christ...there's been a lot of them, haven't there?
The loss to Washington in 1979 was awful. I was so sure the Ice Man was going to lead us to victory.
But really, all of them have sucked.

We lost that series because of Pop's idiotic insistence on going with a losing "small-ball" strategy. We got killed on the boards, and there was nobody to defend the rim except Duncan, who repeatedly got into foul trouble.

'95, '04, '06. Losing always sucks but it really sucks losing to the Mavs.

Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
With all due respect to the .4 game and the Manu foul game, the 1979 loss to the Bullets was the worst playoff loss in franchise history. And it's not even close. You have to put that series in its proper context. The Spurs had just joined the league after the ABA merger a couple of seasons earlier, and there was a palpable dislike for the ABA teams, mostly coming from the likes of that asshole Red Auerbach (RIP) who derided the league at every opportunity.
The ABA was thought of as inferior. It was thought of as bush league (which it was, of course). But say what you will, the ABA had just as many talented players as the NBA. Even with all of their condescending shit, the NBA teams had no problem pilfering the talent from the ABA, turning some of its teams from crap to competitive. Artis went to the Bulls and immediately made them respectable. Dr. J was the most dynamic player in the world at the time and was sold to the Sixers so the Nets could afford to join the league. Moses ended up in Houston. Maurice Lucas was huge for Portland's championship. But the NBA never gave the ABA teams respect, and the ABA guys all played with a chip on their shoulder because of it.
In any event, winning that series would've legitimized the ABA and the Spurs. The Spurs were up 3-1 on the Bullets, and choked the series, aided by one of the worst flops in NBA history when they called an offensive foul on Billy Paultz as he was setting a pick in the final minute of game 7. It was just an awful call. Washington went on to win the finals against Seattle, and the Spurs never got that close again really until 1999. And truthfully, by 1999, I sort of thought of the Spurs as the Boston Red Sox of the NBA. Always good, never good enough to win it all, and always cursed.
To me, anything after 1999 is gravy. So we lost to the Lakers on a time keeper's screwup? So what, we won the title the previous and following year. Big deal. Same thing with Manu's foul. Complaining about those two is just being spoiled at this point.

I agree. It takes longer than .4 seconds to even blink your eyes.
Its a tie between 04 and 06 for me.... Erasing a 20 point deficit in the second half of game 7 and taking a 3 point lead with 30 seconds to go. After being down 3-1 we were gonna beat the cocky ass Mavs who punched us and talked shit on our town and got all the calls, then disaster.....

The foul only tied the game. We still had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation and overtime. Without Manu's help the Spurs wouldn't have a chance to even win last years game.
Another thing Duncan and Manu both were injured last year too, so to blame an entire series on one player is stupid! We were also down 3-1 in that series it was a great series overall.
The worst loss I remember was the Fisher shot.
I'm not blaming Manu at all. You are right, without him the Spurs wouldnt have had a chance to win the game at all. If anything I just felt terrible for him.

This sums it all up. If you were alive and following the spurs in 1979 which many here who are answering .4 or last year were not, its 1979, and for the exact reasons given in your post.

Trade Manu!.............. oh, wait...

Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
1. 2004 (.4). Absolutely the worst. Up 2-0, we had those chumps. The way Detroit handled them in the finals only made it worse.
2. 2001 (Sweep) Yes, it was disappointing, as we had the best record that year. But, that was a very, very, very good Lakers team. One of the best teams of all time. But I would have liked to have seen more fight in our guys.
3. 1995 (Hakeemed). I'm still not over that team. Should have been our first title.
4. 2006 (Enough Said) We got Dirked. Worst of all, Dallas fouled the whole thing up, after all the good work they did in finally beating us.
5. 1994 (Maloned) No, that team wasn't that good. Utah was much better that season.
6. 1990 (Strickland's no look pass) Pretty disappointing.

Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
95 sucked donkey balls, i was away at college and trying to study for finals. It was a miserable, miserable time.
2004 sucked cus Spurs would have had a 3peat if they had won that year, and all this bullshit talk of not being able to repeat would have been put to rest three years ago. I also have personal reasons why 2004 is memorable, but I have talked about that already and won't get into it again.
2006 hurt, but when the Mavs choked in the Finals, I have to admit a little bit of the sting was taken away :)

Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
For all of the historical reasons that Mitch Cumsteen cited, I think 1979 has to be among the hardest for Spurs fans who go back that far. Being one of the few clubs to concede a 3-1 lead in a playoff series is bad enough; but having done it in a conference finals at a time when respectability was hard to come made it that much worse.
Washington didn't go on to win the title in 1979 -- Washington was the defending champion at that point and ended up losing the Finals to Seattle 1-4.

The Spurs lost a first round series against the Suns in 1992, but David Robinson didn't play in that series, which goes some distance towards explaining the series loss.
In David's years with the Spurs, they lost in the first round to Golden State in 1991, to Phoenix in 1992 (without David), and to Utah in 1994.

Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
Great points about 1979.
0.4 for me because it was the Lakers.
If we had won in 2004, it would have evened our playoff record with Phil Jackson and go one up on Kobe and Shaq. I am not so sure if we win the championship that year but it would have been an interesting series with Detroit.
The Spurs/Lakers rivalry between 1998 and 2004 is one of the greatest in NBA History. The fact that they added Karl Malone and Gary Payton was straight out of a DC Comic. The villains all join forces to defeat the superhero.
-
Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
1979 w/o a doubt.
SA had just beaten Dr. J's 76ers to win their first ever playoff series in the NBA. Then blowing a 3-1 lead and having John Vanak call that crap foul against Paultz in Game 7...not to mention the "mysterious" power failure that occurred in the 3rd qtr of that game, at a time when the Spurs were comfortably in the lead and in thorough control.
-
Re: Which Playoff Exit Was Most Disappointing To You?
Last year by far. Every other year the Spurs' players were just unable to do it, for whatever reason. Last year the coach made the players do it with a big part of their team tied to the bench, and it was just enough to cost them the season. If not for that we could be looking at the Spurs trying to threepeat, which would have cemented their legacy.
