I don't see Butler making the difference but it'd be nice.
I'm pretty sure Butler will be in the Summer League this year and I wouldn't be suprised to see him dominate. I'd equate the Summer League competition to D-League or CBA, and he blew up the latter.
I just think that if he stays motivated and in shape, there is a considerable amount of upside and talent to admire.
The main reason I see him as a difference-maker is that the Spurs are in need of a low-post scorer when Duncan rests, and he has the ability to fill that role.
If he busts out in the Summer League and training camp, I think he could take over Elson's spot in the rotation and be a contributor next year.
But, I guess you could say I'm optimistic... :lol
Re: Spurs re-sign Oberto and Vaughn
He did just those things in the last couple games of the year, against gasol, Reggie Evans and some other good bigs.
Don't see why he couldn't do it against the rest of the league's back up big men.

I'm with you. He wasn't the automatic and-1 against quick PGs that Van Exel and Udrih were last year. I'd still love to get someone on par with Claxton '03, but the team could do a lot worse than Vaughn.

Ain't Marvin Williams under contract?
Re: Spurs re-sign Oberto and Vaughn
I'm happy these two are back. Definitely keeps the cohesion and chemistry together for another year.

I like this signing a lot and love that it was for the vet minimum. I think it just shows Vaughn's desire to be a stalwart on this team and his play will be a valuable part of repeating next year. In other words, he still needs to step his game up and keep Tony rested throughout the regular season grind.
First year in the system, Vaughn held his own, especially defensively. I've heard various Spurs say it takes a few years to really feel comfortable in their system. I look forward to seeing if there will be any sort of progression with Vaugh's decision making with scorers are on the floor and finding more consistency with the jumper after one year of playing with them and winning a championship. Unlike Beno, I think he's up to the task.
I may eat my words later.

Re: Spurs re-sign Oberto and Vaughn
3.5M per year for 3 years. Thats very reasonable. Especially if the final year is an option. I love getting the hometown discount.
Re: Spurs re-sign Oberto and Vaughn
So do the resignings of Oberto, Vaughn, and Big Red mean the 2008 master plan is no more?

Why? None of these are significant cap eaters. Still a lot of room under the cap for next season.

Retaining Oberto is nice, but it doesn't really move the dial much compared to the signings of players like Lewis and Carter. Where this deal really pays off is in the following years. Look at the deals that other teams are giving to quality big men; heck, look at the deal second-tier perimeter players are getting.
Oberto's contract is much more reasonable than those, continuing the Spurs' trend of being an oasis of fiscal sanity in these otherwise crazy times. That's going to pay huge dividends next summer, because depending on what the '08 cap figure comes in at, the Spurs could have enough cap space to go above the midlevel exception in pursuit of other free agents -- in what appears, at the moment, to be a loaded free agent class.

A rotation player for a championship team signing for the league minimum? Believe it. Vaughn is likely to come back in the same role as he did a year ago, and by not splurging on a backup point guard the Spurs have more dough available to go after higher-priority needs. The only way this comes back to bite them is if Tony Parker has an extended injury absence.
