Congrats to PJ.
Some expect Pop to just slide over Don Newman to the lead assistant coach role. I wonder if that's going to be what happens or if the Spurs will look to bring in a new lead assistant from the outside.
some new blood in the coaching ranks doesn't hurt

The Seattle SuperSonics have decided to hire P.J. Carlesimo as their new head coach, an NBA source said Tuesday evening.
Carlesimo has spent the previous five seasons as an assistant on the staff of Spurs coach Gregg Popovich.
Seattle’s new owner, Clay Bennett -- a former member of the Spurs’ ownership group -- has tried to use the Spurs as a blueprint to remake the Sonics. Last month, Bennett hired Spurs assistant general manager Sam Presti to oversee the Sonics’ front office.
Seattle is expected to announce Carlesimo’s hiring Wednesday afternoon.

Well, at least the league officials know what the Spurs are all about: Success.
Congrats to PJ :tu
The search for a new head assistant begins now.
I'm guessing they just promote Newman, but who knows.Quote:

About time Carlesimo got another shot. Congrats. Go whoop ass (except Spurs').
Congrats to PJ. It's been a long time coming but he deserves it. I hope the Spurs can bring a former player back like a Mario Elie or someone to be the #1 asst.
Is Don Newman considered lead assistant-caliber?
They could go Argentine and hire Ruben Magnano. :)
Congrats to Carlesimo and best wishes to the Sonics except against the Spurs.
That would be a slight to Newman not to move up. Like it really matters to pop who's sitting in the 2nd or 3rd chair.
I would love to see the Spurs go out and hire a quality international coach.Quote:

great chance to get a young coach in to learn the ropes that has a young different point of view on things.
Good timing. :lolQuote:

GREAT for PJ, but he will be missed ...
It's gonna blow when we go 1-3 against the Sonics next season.

Already? :lol
Agreed. Portland looks like they will win championships. The question is how soon can they put it together . . .Quote:

Earlier this summer I thought that if PJ got hired, two people the Spurs could look at as potential replacements as assistant coaches could be Paul Pressey and Tom Thibodeau. However, both were hired within the last 24 hours.

The New Orleans Hornets hired former NBA player Paul Pressey as an assistant coach on Monday.
"Paul will be a great addition to our team," head coach Byron Scott said. "He has many years of experience in the NBA, as both a great player and assistant coach."

Tom Thibodeau was hired Monday as an assistant coach with the Washington Wizards.
Thibodeau spent the past four seasons as an assistant with the Houston Rockets.
I'd venture to guess two years from now only one or two of those players will be on the Spurs.Quote:

Everybody wants a piece of the spurs success I guess
The biggest reason Portland played us so tough...was Zach Randolph. If Oden is as good as Randolph offensively...TPark will leave the forum for a year. You have my word.
I hope the Spurs do hire the coach of the Argie National Team...dude is a bad ass offensive coach.
Congrats to PJ. I'll miss him here, but he deserves to be an NBA head coach again.
You mean the ex-coach?Quote:

Couple years ago. He took a head coaching job in the Italian league ... and I guess being the national coach for Argentina is a full time job.Quote:

That doesn't mean the food is going to be good.
Let's see how good of a cook they are now and I doubt they've even figured out what they want to make yet....lots of choices...and that's not always a good thing...it doesn't always get the best meal made.
Two different things...
Yet another coach that knows the spurs plays and how to defend our players I hope we don't face Seattle in the playoffs :rolleyesQuote:

I'm just hoping that it was a fluke that the Spurs won three championships during PJ's five years as assistant coach.

Elie just took a job with the Mavericks.
I am not sure, but I don't think Elie's stint as an assistant went over too well here. He sure did leave fast. He was also coaching a couple of guys he played with(Malik and Duncan)...something Pop isn't a big fan of doing.
And I say this as a huge fan of Elie the player.
Mario can be a little on the blunt side...something that probably doesn't go over as well without his stepping on the court to hit daggers, after being blunt.

Report: Spurs assistant Carlesimo to be named Sonics coach
Associated Press
Updated: July 3, 2007, 8:23 PM ET
SEATTLE -- The Seattle SuperSonics have scheduled a Thursday news conference amid reports that the team has hired P.J. Carlesimo as its new head coach.
Team officials are refusing to comment on a report appearing on the San Antonio Express-News Web site, which says Carlesimo has been chosen by Sonics' ownership.
Carlesimo has been an assistant the last five seasons in San Antonio and before that was a head coach in Portland and Golden State.
Carlesimo and former Minnesota coach Dwane Casey have been considered the two front-runners for the position. The Sonics fired Bob Hill on April 24.
when was this.Quote:
Elie just took a job with the Mavericks.
:clap Good for him! He's waited a long time for this, so I hope he does well there.
I never found a link confirming it, but I do know he was rumored to go to Dallas to fill one of their coaching vacancies, left by Sam Vincent who took the Bobcats head coaching job. I thought he left fast because his high school buddy, Chris Mullin, offered him the #1 asst. coaching job when he hired Mike Montgomery in 2004. He was like under PJ and Mike Bud when he coached that one year here.Quote:

SEATTLE (AP) -- The Seattle SuperSonics have scheduled a Thursday news conference amid reports that the team has hired P.J. Carlesimo as its new head coach.
Team officials refused to comment Tuesday on a report that first appeared on the San Antonio Express-News Web site, which said Carlesimo had been chosen by Sonics' ownership. General manager Sam Presti, who spent the last seven years working in the Spurs' organization before becoming Seattle's GM on June 7, was traveling and unavailable for comment.
Carlesimo, 58, has been an assistant the last five seasons in San Antonio and before that was a head coach in Portland and Golden State.
Carlesimo and former Minnesota coach Dwane Casey were considered the two front-runners for the position, vacant since the Sonics fired Bob Hill on April 24 after the team went 31-51 last season. Calls to Casey were not immediately returned.
When the 30-year-old Presti was hired, finding a new coach seemed to be the top priority for the youngest GM in basketball, who was given authority over the coaching search.
But the process dragged, in part because Carlesimo couldn't interview until after the Spurs won their third NBA title since 2003.
Sonics' owner Clay Bennett, a former member of the Spurs' board of governors in the 1990s, has repeatedly said he wants to model the Sonics after the San Antonio organization. He seems on his way there, having plucked Presti and now, apparently, Carlesimo from the Spurs.
Carlesimo has played a supporting role in San Antonio, far different from his last stop as a head coach in Golden State, where he clashed with players and had an infamous run-in with Latrell Sprewell.
Carlesimo's intense, in-your-face approach in Golden State almost immediately became an issue when tensions developed between him and Sprewell, his star player.
The emotions boiled over at a practice Dec. 1, 1997, when Sprewell responded to Carlesimo's terse command of "put a little mustard" on a pass by choking his coach. It took several players and team officials to break up the attack, which an angry Sprewell renewed 15 minutes later.
Sprewell initially had his contract terminated by the Warriors and was suspended a year by the NBA, but the sanctions were reduced by an arbitrator to a 68-game suspension that still cost the All-Star guard $6 million in wages.
Following his reinstatement, the Warriors traded Sprewell to the New York Knicks. Carlesimo was fired by Golden State early in the 1999 season after a 6-21 start.
Carlesimo took Portland to the playoffs each of his three seasons with the Trail Blazers, but never advanced out of the first round.
Seattle has seen its two star players leave in the last week. Seven-time All-Star Ray Allen was traded to Boston on draft night for the rights to No. 5 pick Jeff Green, Delonte West and Wally Szczerbiak.
Then late Monday night, free agent forward Rashard Lewis agreed to a deal with the Orlando Magic.
One positive for Carlesimo would be the opportunity to work with Texas star Kevin Durant, picked by Seattle with the No. 2 pick in last week's draft. Durant and Green will both be part of Seattle's summer league team that begins play Friday in Las Vegas.

Promote Brett Brown!!!
He did a great job here in Australia, he is very similar to Pop in style.
Congrats to PJ! :tu Bout freaking time he got a shot... though I wish he would have gone to the Magic. Playing the Sonics is going to be a headache now.
PJ took the Seattle job because he knows Durant doesn't have upper body strength.
Good for PJ -- he deserves another chance. I'd love to see the Spurs bring in anyone who can add to the paradigm by injecting some new philsophy into the mix.
As for Portland, I'm thinking that they have a chance to be similar to the 1989-90 Spurs. If they manage to add a solid veteran contributor this summer, they can be quite scary. They certainly have a decent chance to win that division in the next season or two.

Do you have any nsight in who the Spurs bring in to fill in Newman's old spot when he is moved up?Quote:

As to those who downplay the role of the assistants: Pop's assistant coaches get to do more and have more input than probably any other team in the NBA.

What about bringing back Terry Porter as an assistant? Is he still coaching?
Assistant Coach Don Nelson.

I always got the impression that Pop consults with Budenholzer more than anyone else, at least for in game strategy.
