Of course, the big motivation for this trade proposal was the age difference. Manu is getting older and Tayshaun is still young, so this would be, in my eyes, a trade aimed at reloading an already good, albeit older team.
Tayshaun won't bring the killer instinct or ability to close games that Manu would bring, but how long is he going to be able to do that for? One or two more years max, I predict, without losing a lot of his quickness (barring any major injuries).
I'm not saying that this is a monster of a good deal for the Spurs -- of course, in the short term, it will bring whoever gets Manu a legitimate SG/SF starter or sixth man. But take a look at how far Shaq has declined in three years, and how that trade by the Lakers has enabled them to build around one young star and bring in some additional young talent. Couldn't we do the same with Parker, and keep our own dominant big man the way the Lakers couldn't?
To make the deal a little more even, we could ask for a legit backup PG in Lindsey Hunter:
