Mozilla Ready to Launch Firefox 3 into Browser Wars
Just more than 10 years ago, Mozilla threw its open-source code into the public domain. Today, its browser -- Firefox -- is preparing to launch its third major release in hopes of continuing to eat away at Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
Firefox already has more than 18 percent of the global market, according to Net Applications. With the release of Firefox 3, Mozilla could see a boost in downloads and market share. Microsoft's next version of Internet Explorer won't come to market until later this year.
On June 17, Mozilla will release Firefox 3. After more than 34 months of active development and the contributions of thousands of people, Firefox 3 will be downloadable free from the Mozilla Web site. Mozilla is promising this is the best browser -- period.
"Firefox 3 is a very nice browser. It's still going to have to go up against Internet Explorer {Windows] and Safari [Mac], which have the home court advantage on their operating systems," said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at JupiterResearch. "It shows that the browser market is anything but stagnant."
A Focus on Security
Firefox 3 is based on the Gecko 1.9 Web rendering platform. Building on the previous release, Gecko 1.9 has more than 15,000 updates, including some major re-architecting for improved performance, stability, rendering correctness, and code simplification and sustainability. The result, Mozilla said, is a more secure, easier to use, more personal product with a lot more under the hood to offer Web-site and Firefox add-on developers.
Mozilla begins with a focus on security. Users can click a Web site's favicon [icon] in the location bar to see who owns the site and to check if the connection is secure. Identity verification is prominently displayed and easier to understand, Mozilla said. When a site uses Extended Validation (EV) SSL certificates, the site's favicon will turn green and show the name of the company.
Firefox 3 also has malware protection to warn users when they arrive at sites known to install viruses, spyware, trojans or the like. And a new Web Forgery Protection service blocks the content of pages suspected as Web forgeries. New SSL error pages, Mozilla said, are clearer and stricter, and Firefox automatically disables old and insecure add-on and plug-in versions.
Add-ons that provide updates in an insecure manner will also be disabled. Firefox will inform antivirus software when downloading executables and the browser respects the Vista parental control setting for disabling file downloads.
Easier, More Personal
Mozilla also concentrated on making Firefox easier to use and more personalized. In terms of password management, that means an information bar replaces the old password dialog so users can save passwords after a successful login. The add-on whitelist has been removed, making it possible to install extensions from third-party sites in fewer clicks. And a new download manager aims to makes it much easier to locate downloaded files. Users can also see and search the Web site where a file came from.
Firefox 3 allows users to add bookmarks from the location bar with a single click and associate keywords with bookmarks to sort them. Web applications, such as a favorite Webmail provider, can now be used instead of desktop applications to handle Web-site mail links. The Add-ons Manager can be used to download and install a Firefox customization from the thousands of add-ons available from Mozilla's Web site.
Gartenberg expects the competition to dominate browsing will continue. Even now, Microsoft is working on the release of IE 8 and Apple is seeding Safari 4. "Clearly, Web browsers are still very important, as important as they were 10 years ago, but just in a different way," he said. "The bottom line is no one is actually paying for a browser any more. A browser is free. It's something you give away in order to make money elsewhere."

Re: FireFox 3: Download Day
Nope. I have no clue why firefox is supposedly better and really I have enough memory that if that's the reason, I don't care. All I know is that IE has extra tabs right there behind the main page so you don't need to click, file-open new tab or hit the hotkey as I had to do when I tried out Firefox. That's about all that matters to me.
Re: FireFox 3: Download Day
Mozilla must be getting crushed by all the downloaders. I can't even get the page to load.

They've been having issues all day. I was finally able to grab it from here:

dumb question... I believe it keeps your bookmarks in place when you upgrade, but does it keep stored passwords, etc... from one version to another? Or will those need to be reentered?

Just got it.. don't see any big difference. Graphics look cleaner, the tabs thing. My adds were not compatible.
It is faster than IE by far, that's the main difference. Other than that.. I don't see what all the hoopla is about..
Re: FireFox 3: Download Day
I really don't get it. Faster than IE? By far? I mean I clik a link, boom, the page is loaded. Instantly. Everybody says it's faster and hell maybe in terms of nanoseconds it is, but I don't see how Firefox could possibly be noticeably faster than the "instant" load time IE provides me. Maybe if I were traveling at the speed of light I'd notice, but as it is I don't really need my browser to load pages faster than it does.
Like I said above, until Firefox implements a tab system like the one in this screenshot IE will be my choice.

Does the new Firefox have that, because last time I checked it didn't. People are all like, "you can't be serious," when I say IE or Brutalis just laughed, but I mean if somebody could explain what's so much better about it I'd like to know. Maybe it is a foregone conclusion, but like I said, I really just don't get it.

By that do you mean a tab system where the newest created tab is first instead of last in line? I've always found that weird in IE.

I mean in FF I think you have to either click on file- open new tab, or hit ctrl+T, in order to open a new tab. I don't use it and I haven't seen #3, but I think so anyway.
In IE there is a new tab right there behind the page (see the circle on my screenshot) that is already there with nothing loaded, so all you have to do is click your mouse on it and a new blank tab opens up.
And if I follow you correctly, in IE 7 the tabs stay in the order/priority they were opened, left to right.

I can see liking that feature better. I prefer using the keyboard to pointing and clicking a new tab though, so it's not an issue with me.
I was wrong in the way I described how IE opens tabs. Here's what I don't like...
Say I have www.spurstalk.com open in the first tab, and www.spursreport.com in the second tab. Then, I go to the first tab (spurstalk.com), and right click and open the Spurs forum from it in a new tab. I don't like that the new tab is placed in between the original two tabs in IE7 instead of after it (like FF does).
Re: FireFox 3: Download Day
ball I wasn't laughing at YOU, just at the thought of IE being better than FF. Obviously it's a personal pref and all. Yer one of my fav posters sweetie.
By faster, not the internet. The program itself. FF loads faster than IE, has more options, and is cleaner.
For instance, notice when you clear your temp int files and cache on IE it takes longer than it does to do it on FF. And that's been the case on my friends puter, my old one, and this one.
Also, its pop-up aka ad blocker is better. When I use IE I notice ads get through on some websites that FF has blocked. Also, the plug ins aka add ons for FF are sweeter.
Some of what I say is just my pref, but some is just because of my experience FF has proven me more useful.
However, FF3 is faster, and cleaner, but I don't see any major upgrades from FF2.

I hate that too. Cause back when I used IE when I had multiple tabs up, I'd go click a tab from the order in which I opened it, and it'd be a different tab. I was like dubya tee ef, mate? I like how FF tabs them in order of when it was opened.
However ball has a good point, and I agree, I wish FF had a spare tab that's not anything until you click it. FF makes ya do the click and open crap. So that is one advantage IE has.
The other day I quoted Sense about the tab thing saying FF does have that, but I misunderstood him apparently.

On FF you just double click the blank space next to the tab you're on and you get a new blank tab.
Re: FireFox 3: Download Day
Downloaded and I'm liking it... :-D
Re: FireFox 3: Download Day
After downloading FF3 and the latest Opera, I'd have to say I like Opera more. Even though the FF add ons are better but they aren't compatible with FF3 so it's a non issue now.

Re: FireFox 3: Download Day
Done.
I haven't relaunched my Firefox yet though.
I'm so lazy.

Yeah but if you only have one page up, there is no option for that.
Re: FireFox 3: Download Day
How fucking hard is it to press CTRL-T?
