Giovani dos Santos is considering quitting Mexico's World Cup squad following the omission of his brother Jonathan.

    • Jonathan axed by Mexico

The players' father, Zizinho, is enraged by coach Javier Aguirre's decision not to take both of his sons to South Africa - and he now wants both of them to quit the squad permanently.

Zizinho, himself a former professional player in South America, said: "Gio is very hurt and he wants to be at home with us. He is there now and he's not well. We don't know if he will play (at the World Cup) or not. We still don't know anything.''

Jonathan is also set to quit international football over the snub - something his father completely agrees with. "Jonathan told me that he is going to quit the Mexican team and I don't want him playing for them anymore anyway,'' Zizinho added.

This is just pathetic.... and it's going to affect Mexico even if he doesn't leave.

Truth is, Jonathan was not quite ready for this world cup...

I heard Zizinho's interview in Spanish. He overreacted and his comments were rubbish.

In all seriousness, their father can make all the threats he wants about Jona never playing for Mexico again, but does anyone think Brazil or Spain would need him on their squad? If I had to bet money, Jona will return to Mexico by next year and Giovani will play in the world cup.

Question is, does Mexico want a little willing to blackmail his nation team into playing his brother? What a little

This is exactly what I was thinking, there's no way Jonathan makes the Brazil squad.... Giovani could eventually, but at the end of the day if he goes through with this... it's going to look very bad...and something he will regret.

Jonathan I think, is overrated... I saw him play in some friendlies and he made more mistakes than plays.... over time he could be a decent player but he shouldn't be reacting like he's good enough for the squad.

I would've taken him over Blanco though, god how I hate him.

I heard that Zizinho and Aguirre were real close friends. They played together back in the day. I'm guessing Zizinho wanted a personal favor from Aguirre. This has happened before with the Mexican team; players, without enough merit, get called up because of favors or friendship, stuff like that.

This is the kinda distracting that's never positive before the world cup. And Zizinho needs to grow a pair and put Mexico over his petty bull .

There are a couple of misleading takes in this thread....

    1) Gio never said he would quit the team... that's all been the overreaction of Zizinho...

    2) Jonathan has more talent than at least 15 of the players on the current 23-man squad. FC Barcelona would not have signed him to a 3 year extension if he were only a scrub. It's been said that his hamstring injury a month ago (muscle tear) rendered him a little tentative and imprecise. That's ultimately what did him in... But any of you all would be pissed if you were cut from a team knowing you were better than several of your peers... that said, he's overreacting... he's young and has the opportunity to participate in at least 3 World Cups....

    3) Sense you may hate "Cuahu" (must be a Chivas fan) but his talent is undeniable. Very few Mexican players are capable of delivering the passes he does... that's two amazing assists against the Italians (Borgetti header in '02 and today's pass to Medina). I agree that he's a temperamental headcase though...

I am a Chivas fan, but I never really hated him because he was with America... he is a headcase, and while I do respect his passing ability... he brings nothing else to this team other than slow legs and constant flopping a long with the whining.. Not to mention the unsportsmanlike conduct... did you see the elbow?

I think they need to stop calling the old man to the field, we are not going to get better with him in there.... they're only setting us back.

I've never been one to throw elbows on the pitch... but the Italian defender stiffed armed Blanco behind his neck...

As for the flopping... Blanco manages to keep the ball in his feet and draws many fouls... that in itself generates scoring opportunities for the team even if he can't slash to the goal anymore (due to lack of footspeed).

I probably would agree with your position more if he were playing the full game... Aguire has said Cuahutemoc will only be playing 25 minutes a game though (and that he expects him not to hold back in that time frame - since he no longer has to pace himself)... Having Blanco as a sub is a veteran's luxury. It's no coincidence that Aguirre once again managed to secure a last second classification to the World Cup when he called on the services of a then "retired-from-the-national-team" Blanco...

If anything, Aguirre should have taken Jonathan instead of ing Bofo. I'm still so pissed he's on the squad. Where's Zinha, Nery, even Omar Bravo or de Nigris?

typical Mexican soap opera distracting stuff... timing is really bad though... if they don't go far on the cup Giovani will be shot to death by some of the Mexican cartels losing money because of an early exit or something...

You're ing ting me. Bofo got in? Mexico needs a new start and stop playing all these guys from 2007 on down. Minus Marquez and the marquee players. I know Bofo wasn't there in 2006, but still. I'd rather have Neri in there.

    Gio is staying.

It's all good now. Jona already spoke and basically said his dad was talking out of his ass and he understands why he was cut..
Judging by yesterday's game Gio seems fine and had a nice assist on that goal by Vela.

That being said i still can't believe bofo is on the squad. Hopefully he'll just be a bench warmer but even if he is why not have Jona as a bench warmer instead?

I'll take Medina over Nery, de Nigris, and Omar Bravo anyways...

Nery was awesome on the last world cup, nearly unstoppable, but he's a headcase now... de Nigris wouldn't make a difference, and Bravo disappears in important situations..

Medina is fast and crafty... and managed to score a goal against Italy... we'll see how he works out..

As far as Bofo... that's just Aguirre trying too hard to put veterans on the field... It should've been either Bofo or Blanco, since they pretty much do the same things on the field IMHO.

Zinha is great, and should've been on the squad instead of Bofo, either him or Jonathan.

Medina is garbage yeah he's fast but thats about it.
Nery never played for Mexico in the World Cup..
    De Nigris died last year...
    Bravo is garbage too.
I would take Zinha over Bofo though, i'll take anyone over that scrub
