Prince William claims he had been "planning [his proposal] for a while," but his new fianceé Kate Middleton didn't see it coming.
"I didn't really expect it all," Middleton told Tom Bradby of ITV News in the U.K. "I thought that he had maybe sort of thought about it, but no, it was a total shock when it came – and I'm very excited."
William, who proposed with the engagement ring of his late mother Princess Diana, actually had the piece of jewelry handy for several weeks.
"I'd been carrying around the ring with me ... for about three weeks before [proposing]," he says. "I would not let it go. You hear a lot of horror stories about proposing and things go horribly wrong, but it went really, really well."

I have quite a few Brits on my twitter feed and watching the British humour people go off after the announcement was high entertainment. Within five minutes someone tweeted "Oh, I hope they make a connection to Diana, no matter how tenuous." Within 30 minutes of that tweet was the first article linking Kate with Diana, lol.
It's very nice for them, wish them well, but as I am not British and live in America, I'm puzzled as to the sheer volume of news coverage over here about it.
