Dodgers get Hanley Ramirez in deal with Marlins
Seeking to revive a stagnant offense, the Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired third baseman Hanley Ramirez and reliever Randy Choate from the Miami Marlins in exchange for pitcher Nathan Eovaldi and a minor leaguer, a source familiar with the trade said late Tuesday night.
Ramirez will play shortstop for the Dodgers in the short term until Dee Gordon recovers from a torn thumb ligament, then move to third base.
The trade is the second in two days for the underachieving Marlins, who dealt second baseman Omar Infante and pitcher Anibal Sanchez to the Detroit Tigers on Monday.
Ramirez, 28, is batting .246 with 14 home runs and 47 RBIs for the Marlins. He was moved off shortstop this winter, when the Marlins acquired Jose Reyes in an attempt to remake the club in its inaugural season at Marlins Park. The rebuild has not worked.
The Dodgers believe the skilled Ramirez will benefit from the change of scenery and recapture the form that made the three-time All-Star one of the National League’s better players at the end of the last decade. They will assume all of Ramirez’s contract, or about $38 million through the 2014 season.
Choate, a veteran left-hander, has a 2.49 ERA in 44 appearances for the Marlins.
The Marlins, who received top-rated pitching prospect Jacob Turner from the Tigers, continued to rework their pitching staff. Eovaldi is a 22-year-old right-hander who was 1-6 with a 4.15 ERA in 10 starts for the Dodgers. From Nolan Ryan’s hometown of Alvin, Texas, Eovaldi was one of the team’s premier prospects.

Would still be a power upgrade over Gordon at the SS or even spell Uribe at the 3rd as he hasn't amounted to much for the Dodgers.
can mattingly do what guillen couldnt?
Knowing what I know about his statistical drop off and his immaturity, plus my su ions about his age, and the fact he's expensive and a lockerroom handful, I'm not disappointed that the Dodgers pick him up.
Keep sacrificing the future on the altar of the immediate for players that likely hurt as much as they help.
Once HanRam gets his avg to .300 he'll suffer a mysterious injury that'll keep him on the DL for the remainder of the year. Works everytime.
Watched his first game vs Cards. He got a triple on his first hit. Think he was 2 for 4 or something. He's a good player in what I've seen tbh
He's playing well for now. I hope he helps LA sweep San Francisco. But once it goes south for Hanley, and it will, his at ude and poor/lazy play can really hurt his teams.
Be a bloody good effort to sweep SF.
Fair enough, I don't know much about him, just seen him in a couple of games
He's been benched a number of times by a couple different managers for destructive/lazy play or detrimental comments. He always has an at ude about him if he doesn't get his way. He's kind of the Owens of MLB shortstops. Wouldn't surprise me whatever happens. So much talent, so much headcase.
Oh. He's one of those players. He seemed like he had a good at ude when I was watching. As I said only saw him in a couple of games but was always smiling and giving out high 5s
How am I wrong? How am I crying?
There's a reason why Florida first replaced him, then traded his ass for pennies on the dollar.
Ummm yea, because they are the Marlins. How long have you been following baseball?
He's a moody player and he wasn't happy in Florida. It's that simple. There is a reason he started beasting as soon as he put on a Dodger uniform. The baseless accusations about his age are just dumb and reek of sour grapes. I'll take a guy who is in his prime and has better career numbers than Matt Kemp for Nathan Eovaldi every day of the week.
How many World Series do the Dodgers have since 1990? How many do the Marlins? Despite the Dodgers having a well run team for many years pre-McCourt, the Marlins are the best example of an organization that understands the strengths/weaknesses of their players and weighs them against actual worth to the organization and the team concept.
The Marlins have two les managing head case talent worth winning with. For what the Dodgers traded, it absolutely was a move worth making. However, him being in statistical decline for the better part of two years, being a locker room head case, and clashing heads with three managers can't be disputed. While I expect him to play better for the change of scenery, Ramirez is expensive, and could ultimately prove more costly in the next few seasons than just his salary. They have like 75 million in four players. Unless you fully commit to just buying talent at the pace of the Yankees, you will be as hindered long term as helped short-look at the Sox, Phillies, Mets, etc.
I don't have any use for sour grapes. You got Ramirez at 15 per, Diamondbacks brought in Kubel at 7 per. Half the price, twice the production. For a team boasting the reigning Cy Young, the real MVP, several other All-Stars, and a payroll twice that of Arizona's, it's sure not helped ya be much better than the just-as-injury-plagued Diamondbacks.
Dodgers get Victorino for Lindbolm/Martin. Another day, another acquisition of an in-decline player, however, this deal makes sense for the range of prospects given up. Victorino may actually increase his doubles/triples switching ballparks with the extra room.
