I believe that you have to purchase the equipment upfront for dish, whereas the equipment is more or less "given" to you thru directv (especially if you have a special offer). Directv requires that you subscribe to your service so that they can recoup your hardware fees; dish does not, since you pay for them. It's not like you can use either hardware with another service, so that is a plus for Directv.
Pick the programming you like best. If you want a DVR, the one from Directv is far superior - it allows you to watch something else when you are recording (unless dish has come up with a two-tuner DVR in the past few months).
I would highly recommend Directv, I have had a good experience with them. I have the DVR/Tivo, but I don't subscribe to premium programming like HBO, etc. The DVR will change the way you watch TV, seriously. You won't be able to do without it.![]()
