It looks promising. The magnetic cover slash keyboard is really sneaky and cool, tbh.

    Shut up haters.

I am reading some stuff from the WP8 event going on right now... Looks good. This is especially cool:

...All this will run on a kernel shared with Windows 8 and Windows RT. In other words: yes, Microsoft has managed to get one platform running on desktops, laptops, tablets and phones, the idea being that apps can be more easily ported from one to the next...
If this works like they are saying (and I am at least a little hopeful since win7 was great), I could consider switching.

The intel based ones will be priced like Ultrabooks. As usual, MS too late to the party.

First, we don't know the price, they didn't say. Second, IT departments everywhere are likely salivating. They have to support ONE platform across all access devices. Budgets = slashed while keeping the same level of service, this can increase efficiency by a large factor.

As for pricing and availability, Microsoft is only going as far to say that it will be "on par with Ultrabook-class PCs" and available about three months after the Windows 8 launch (when the RT model will be available).

I'm kind of wondering why they only put the kickstand at one angle. Otherwise, this looks like a promising solid device.

i wonder if it will have external optical drive compatability. Apple is going to have to impress more than ever with the next tablet to maintain its current success.

Nice. A Windows tablet sounds far far far far more appealing to me than an IOS tablet or an Android tablet.

I was reading the low-end version with an ARM processor that's supposed to compete with the iPad price-wise only runs Windows 8 RT (Metro-only apps, no Win apps). The souped up version with an Intel processor is supposed to come out later on and include full blown Win8, but they're saying the prices for those are going to be in the Ultrabook range (not even sure what that is today).

I thought Win7 was a really good release for MSFT. Haven't played enough with Metro yet though.

yep, it happens at these types of presentations. It is always funny when it does and gives people something to talk about (like when it happens at apple, et al), but isn't really indicative of anything.

128gb ultrabooks are ~1000. I bought my Asus for $950. If that's what the price range is going to be for the 128gb Surface, Ultrabooks are going to take a massive hit. I think the 128gb Surface will start off closer to $1500, while the 64gb will be closer to $1000.

I expect them to be more expensive than your average taiwanese manufacturer. I agree they're probably going to be in the $1000-$1500 camp... basically what an MacBook Air sells for.

Maybe but Microsoft has tried both pricing the same (Xbox) and lower(Zune) depending when entering new markets.

At least with the XBox, Microsoft was making up money with the licensing for the games (they get a percentage of every sell), so they could sell the console at a loss.

They certainly can't afford another dud like the Zune, especially on a device that should cost quite a but more to make.

i don't disagree whatsoever. I am just saying they have been all over the place in release prices relative to the market. The Xbox360 didn't try to undercut the market. The Zune did. The Zune came out as portable mp3 players were on the decline which was a major problem.

It will be interesting to see what MS does.

I think it's either going to be a hit or it's the end of Ballmer... there's been plenty of shareholders asking for his head as it is...
