Anyone see this? Another excellent work in the 30 for 30 series. Sheds some insight on who Laettner really was. I have some new found respect for him after watching.

that was funny. Like they said, it was perfect icing on the Laettner hate cake to see his face among those greats.

I was looking forward to watching this one. I was kinda disappointed. I thought this one was all over the place. Just a bunch of random stuff coming at you.

wow. I didn't really get that. But I didn't know much about him other than what he did on the court. So it filled in a lot of blanks for me. I was in to college ball during that time period so this was a good blast from the past so to say.
I guess it did seem a little disjointed in that they had 2 outlines. The 5 points of hate. But they they also tried to go in some sort of time order as well.

I had high hopes, but was also disappointed. It didn't really change my opinion of him at all. Never hated the guy, he's an admirable compe or but a pretty huge asshole. Still feel that way.

And the few attempts at making him seem hip (he was a huge Public Enemy fan, calling bull ) and the emphasis on him being a sex symbol (which I do not recall at all) seemed forced.

Damn, ya'll are making me rethink my original review. Don't know about the PE thing. But yeah...I don't remember him ever being a sex symbol.
I liked Brian Davis in this though. He reminded me of Charlie Murphy recalling playing ball at Prince's house in Chappelle's show.

How many quotes did the random YouTube blogger get? Who cares what a guy known for making a video thinks

That was another problem I had with it: the majority of the people on there critiquing Laettner were clowns like the blogger. Jalen Rose was just about the only voice who was actually there who seemed critical of Laettner, while on the other hand you have Davis, Coach K, Laettner's family etc, telling us how great he was. It would have been interesting to hear more from some of his opponents from the era.

Also, was anybody else really curious about the few members of the Dream Team that supposedly had a big problem with his being there? I would love to know which ones accepted him and which ones just wanted nothing to do with him.

yeah...yeah...I would have definitely liked to hear from some of the Dream Team or even some of the NBA stars that played with or against him. Pretty telling when you think about it. Seems like maybe he was such an asshole that no one wanted to even bother. May be why they had to settle for some dude who made a YouTube video.

Anyway, I'm glad I enjoyed it while I watched it because now it's not standing up so well.

Didn't like this one as much as OP, tbh..

For 30 for 30s on White college athletes, I thought the Bozworth special was much better IMO..

Laettner was a prideful stiff who clinged to the NCAA/Duke for dear life because he knew deep down that his game wouldn't translate to the NBA. Grant Hill was 500x the player he was.

I don't know about all that. He averaged about 16 pts, 3 assists, and 8 rebounds per game in his early years. Played 13 seasons. Seems solid enough. Under the right system, he could have been much better. Put him in Dirk's place and he'd have a pretty good impact.

I actually think it's awesome how much Laettner has embraced the hatred for him and trolled his haters in recent years. The round of commercials with him, Shaq, Drexler, and Dr. J running during the NCAA tournament this year have been interesting, but the one with him "resting on his laurels" is still another way that he's taken the hate and used it to his advantage.

You can say a lot of things about Laettner as an NBA player (though I think you do have to note that he was good enough later in his career, once he left some really crappy teams) to make an All-Star team and managed to hang around for more than a decade to make a solid career for himself.

But as a college player, he's on a very short list of the guys who had great college success because they were great college players. His shots against UConn and Kentucky in the regionals are absolutely iconic and he generally played well in big games -- for instance, he was great in the 1991 semifinal against Vegas and he played a terrific regular season game at LSU against Shaq in 1991 (the year Duke beat Vegas in the National Semifinal).

No doubt. He got out of a crappy situation in Minnesota, went to Atlanta to play for Lenny Wilkens on a solid playoff team (with Mookie Blaylock, Dikembe Mutombo, Steve Smith, and Co.), and put up 18.1/8.8/2.7 on .562 TS%, and made the All-Star team.

if laettner was that good in college, where would he be drafted had he declared in freshmen, 2nd, or 3rd year?

    3rd year, I'd say a top 10. 2nd year...second round. Freshman...doubt he gets picked.
My guesses anyway based on my limited memory of how he was each year.

Before I grew to hate Duke as an Arizona fan (I see you 2001 NCAA National le Game), I loved Duke for trouncing the Runnin Rebels of UNLV as Tark and Lute had intense rivalries, and Arizona beat Laettner's Duke and struggled with those Rebel teams.

I always liked the way Laettner played. He was dominant, sure, and always willing to bury you and let us know about it.

As for the Doc, it was OK. I hate Rob Lowe, so his annoying narration sort of annoyed me, and the whole five items of hatred was dumb.
