Dems Used Katrina to Raise Funds

    Friday, September 09, 2005

WASHINGTON — A new Democratic effort to whip up indignation about the Bush administration's handling of Hurricane Katrina also tried to raise money for Democratic candidates.

Sen. Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat and the head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, issued an appeal Thursday urging people to sign an online pe ion to fire the Federal Emergency Management Agency's director over his handling of the Katrina response.

After an inquiry from the Associated Press, the DSCC quickly pulled down the page and said they would give the Red Cross any money raised by the anti-FEMA pe ion.

When recipients clicked on a link to the pe ion, the top center of the screen — above the call to "Fire the FEMA director" — had asked for a donation to the DSCC.

Since Katrina, Democrats have contended the GOP administration badly botched the response, and some have called for the firing of FEMA chief Michael Brown.

Republicans hit back by accusing Democrats of trying to use the human tragedy for political gain. The DSCC letter, the GOP said Thursday, was proof.

"It's a disgrace to exploit Hurricane Katrina to raise political funds," said Brian Nick, spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

DSCC spokesman Phil Singer said: "While the content of the letter is totally valid, it should never have been linked to a Web site that asks people to contribute to political campaigns."

shrub/ head/Repugs betrayed the USA by politicizing 9/11 to justify every ing Repug agenda item, including "starving the beast" and the bogus Iraq war, both of which had been long-term Repug agenda items well before 9/11.

The USA "came together" after 9/11, gave shrub the benefit of the doubt, wanted to believe the lies, and got kicked in the balls.

And now the Repugs/conservatives about the Dems politicizing the disastrous Repug ups in handling Katrina?

"The president's reaction is that the party committees have made three photos of him, doing his job for the American people, available," Fleischer said. "The party committees made the decision, the White House did not object."

The Bush spokesman said all three pictures were provided by the media to a commercial photo vendor, Corbis.com, and the GOP committees purchased the photos from the commercial vendor.
Not exactly the same as tricking people into a solicitation by linking a poll (seeking to get an administration official fired) to a plea for donations to a political group.

Besides, the picture in question was of the President talking on the phone to the Vice President from Air Force One. It only happened to have been taken on September 11th. I didn't read of there being any 9-11 imagery in the photo.

    Stttteeeeeerrrrrrriiiiiiiike 1.

For $150, donors will receive a framed set of three photos of President Bush in action: One, taking the oath of office. Two, addressing a joint session of Congress. Three, aboard Air Force One, talking on the phone to Cheney on the morning of Sept. 11 (and probably asking Cheney's permission to return to Washington).
Same incident -- repeated in an opinion column. Still no mention of any 9-11 imagery so, now, I'm wondering how they know it was taken on September 11th -- unless they were told.

    Stttteeeeeerrrrrrriiiiiiiike 2.

The event, which raised $10,000 for Murray's campaign against George Nethercutt, was denounced by Republicans as tawdry. Even some Democrats privately questioned the wisdom of holding a fund-raiser on what is still a mournful day.

"I think this says a great deal about Senator Murray's judgment and priorities," Washington state Republican Party Chairman Chris Vance said.

A senior Republican strategist in Washington, D.C., expressed disbelief that anyone would hold a fund-raiser that day. He said he knew of no Republicans who held events.
That was a Democrat, you idiot!

    Stttteeeeeerrrrrrriiiiiiiike 3. You're Out!

Hey genius, I'm very glad you took the time to read all three articles. I'm always awed when people of a superior intellect, such as yourself, respond to the petty little posts that us common folk put up for your amusement. Once you get off your high horse you can note that I didn't write the le to the PI article, or to the CNN ones. All three talked about Bush selling 9-11 photos, and here's some specifics from Seattle.

Republicans also have been involved in controversy over raising money and the terrorist attacks. In May 2002, Democrats bitterly complained about a plan by the Republican National Committee to sell pictures of President Bush making a phone call during in the hours after the Sept. 11 attacks. Democrats said the idea was "grotesque."

The photo of Bush calling Vice President Cheney from Air Force One just hours after the terror attacks is part of a three-picture set the National Republican Senatorial Committee and its House counterpart promised to anyone who donated $150 or more.

The controversy over Murray's fund-raiser also spilled into the state's Republican apparatus. Murray supporters condemned Vance for making telephone calls on Thursday to sell tickets to an awards dinner that doubles as a fund-raiser.
Your precious GOP sold out over the 9-11 photo set, whether pictures of the disaster were shown or not. It's OK, put your NBADan hat on right now and defend me, so your TRO personality can rip your other posts and start the cycle. I know the truth. You have nothing to be afraid of. Go ahead.
