If the Spurs were able to turn Scola's rights into a 1st round pick (say Chicago's at #16) then they could package that with Udrih to move up even higher.

I doubt that any team would give us that good of a draft pick for Scola...his value is pretty low right now because teams have no idea if he will ever play in the NBA..not sure if any team would give up a near lottery pick for a chance at him...IMO our best bet, if we are indeed going to trade him, would be to package him with Barry to get a better package in return, or to include him in a s&t with Nazr to sweeten the deal, if there is somebody we really want.
I wouldn't be so sure about that. Chicago seems to have a very astute international scouting department. They might bite on it. After all, they can't stock a roster full of all young, inexperienced players. They've got tons of money to spend and may see the value in an experienced, player like Scola.
He has value to teams that don't have a post scoring forward. We have that covered, so with us, not so much.
My guess is that if the Spurs want to move up to around the 15 range, it'd take a future first round pick and Scola. The only way Scola is worth more than that is if teams are allowed to discuss contract/buyout with Scola and Tau prior to a trade.
Remember that Giricek was considered a top Euro prospect and all the Spurs could get for him was a second round pick. And that was when Giricek had no buyout and was 100% a free agent.

Presti made sure that it was known that the Spurs were thinking about moving into the first round if the right player falls. Ludden has also mentioned that.
I'm guessing if there's someone they want, the Spurs will use a combination of picks, Scola and Beno to move up into the first round.
I believe that times have changed. Chicago may project Scola to be a 15/8 guy in their system. There's a comfort level in the league with international players that wasn't there in '99. The buyout will be a hindrance with Scola but the Bulls have plenty of cap room to address that.
They traded Giricek in summer 2002.
If the Suns/Seattle trade goes through and Barbosa is not included, I wonder if the Suns would bite on a Williams for Jones/Tskitishvili deal? Jones gets lost in the shuffle behind Lewis and T.Thomas (I assume Phoenix resigns him).
Giricek was never "the best power forward in Europe" which does mean something. He was a jump shooter with no other skills with some height.
If Chicago knows they can buy out Scola's contract, I don't see why they need a sweetener on the deal. As others have said, they don't need more perimeter players, they need valuable post players post haste.
It may not happen, but it doesn't sound unreasonable to suggest. A 16 isn't even a lottery pick.
We were over a barrel with Giricek, and we aren't with Scola. Giricek would have signed a long-term deal to stay in Europe if he hadn't come over that year, so it was trade him or lose him.
Scola's stated intention is to be a FA next year, so if we don't trade him, we can do anything we want with his rights next year.
With this being what the "experts" are calling a very weak draft, why would we want to trade away a future 1st rd pick?
Teams are going to wonder why the Spurs don't want him at all. But some teams will do scouting of their own and maybe get a different opinion on him, all it takes is one team to be high on him. But I doubt mid first round as of right now, but like I said just one team...
