NBC: Saddam to be hanged by Sunday
Ex-dictator’s execution expected to be carried out by start of Eid holiday
Former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, sentenced to death for his role in 148 killings in 1982, will have his sentence carried out by Sunday, NBC News reported Thursday. According to a U.S. military officer who spoke on condition of anonymity, Saddam will be hanged before the start of the Eid religious holiday, which begins that Sunday.
Earlier Thursday, Saddam’s chief lawyer implored world leaders to prevent the United States from handing over the ousted leader to Iraqi authorities for execution, saying the former dictator should enjoy protection from his enemies as a "prisoner of war."
This breaking news story will be updated.

Saddam needs to be put back in power. He is the only one that can handle those ing savages.
My thoughts exactly.
If only this could be a pay-per-view event.
It might help to offset expenses.
I'm going to write a country song about the hangin' of sadam
Give it a little Johnny Horton touch, perhaps.
This is a damned, bloody mistake.
More death will spring from his...is it worth it to make a point? To get revenge?
Nah, Saddam is the Cheney of the Middle East.
Ignore the indignant idiots.
Ignore their bombs and killings too, I guess...
That's what a real patriotic American would do.
"Their" = ??????
Are you implying that "insurgents" support Saddam's cause?
This is sure to be the most watched YouTube vid starting next week.
I'd like to see him lit on fire rather than hang.
You have to be a complete to think that the hanging of Sadaam is a bad thing.
I'm a little surprised. I thought there would be a couple more trials, but seeing what a fiasco the actual trial was, it makes sense.
Saddam was a brutal dictator, but not anymore so than our 'allies' in the war on terra presently calling the shots in places like Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. How many people did the Saudi royalty kill in their rise to power? Fact is, the Iraqi courts set up exclusively to try and convict Saddam had a difficult time proving that he had committed any mass atrocities. He ordered 129 Shiia killed after a failed coup attempt, including some young boys, but that's almost par for course in terms of M.E, justice.
Yes, Saddam deserves to face justice for using mus gas and other nerve agents against the Kurds and the Iranians, wiping out whole villages, casualties of war if you will, but not unlike those casualties of war killed by phospurous bombs dropped by American planes that melted the skin of any Iraqi man, woman or child unfortunate enough to be in the wrong place at the right time.
There are many type of evil, and Saddam was truely evil, but he didn't develop the mus gas spores he sprayed on Kurd villages, he didn't provide the logistics to field commanders that fired WMDs on Iranian military positions, and he wasn't alone in thumbing his nose at the international community during the Iran-Iraq conflict over the use of weapons that have been banned since WW1.
Saddam should live for now, and be tried in the Hague for crimes against humanity.
Give me a break. I'm not going to sit here and try to quantify Sadaam's evil. Any other evil done by anyone else in the world is irrelevent to determining whether I give a flying if this dude lives one more day. He's done, and good riddance.
I'm quantifying the fact that Saddam was essentially rail-roaded in his trial, not that he committed any less evil than any other brutal dictator. If he ls guilty, then the Iraqi people should have no qualm letting Saddam stand trial in International Court for crimes against humanity. Besides, you kill Saddam now and you enrage the Sunni, who are just getting rearmed by the Saudis.

Great, just what we need.Saddam Hussein has vowed to go the gallows as a "martyr" ready and willing to sacrifice himself, after Iraq's highest court rejected an appeal against his death sentence.
In a defiant letter released today but said to be written from his prison cell in November when he was first sentenced to death, the ex-dictator addresses Iraq’s citizens directly, urging them to unite against "the enemies".
"I sacrifice myself. If God wills it, he will place me among the true men and martyrs," he wrote. "O faithful people, I bid you farewell as my soul goes to God the compassionate…Long live Iraq. Long Live Iraq. Long live Palestine. Long live jihad and the Mujahidin. God is great."
The message came as Saddam’s Baath Party - disbanded after his ousting in 2003 - threatened retaliation if the execution went ahead, warning in an internet posting that it would target US interests anywhere...
I see UTube in Saddam's future....
CBS NewsCBS/AP) Saddam Hussein's final moments will be videotaped by the Iraqi government, reports CBS News correspondent Randall Pinkston. National Security adviser Mouffak al Rubaie says the date of the deposed dictator's execution will not be made public, to avoid possible unrest from Saddam's supporters, but everything from the signing of the final orders by the judge, to the hanging itself will be recorded.
Iraqis, members of the coalition, and international representatives will witness the execution. It's not clear whether the videotape will be broadcast on Iraqi television.
An Iraqi government official says efforts are under way to carry out the death sentence by the end of this month, indicating that they want to do the execution before the Muslim celebration of Eid, which coincides with the New Year.
No word yet on who gets to stroke Saddam's hand gun at the magic moment.
