I wouldn't be too distraught if we take him at 33. But frankly, hes not my ideal choice.
He's a rawer Josh Smith, a legit 6'8" or 6'9" shot blocker and rebounder.
Problem is that Josh Smith was 18 when he came into the league and this kid is 22.
But if the Spurs are looking for that extremely athletic long 3/small ball 4 that can rebound and defend...I don't think you look any further than this kid. One thing he does well that Josh Smith does not though....he's a very underrated ball handler and passer.
Truth be told, there's alot of untapped talent here, but I just don't know if the Spurs are hot on him...
I'd find it questionable if the Spurs don't get a SF this offseason to either groom, or atleast get a sg/sf to divide some minutes with Bruce and Finley until they find the 3 they're looking for.
Spurs managed to win this year without the reliable small ball 4, often using Finley, which was a pathetic excuse for a 4. Having said that, I doubt this kid would be able to come in and give minutes at the 3 and especially small-ball 4 position next year.
It's likely that the Spurs address the combo forward who can play the small-ball 4 via free agency or trade....but I think it'll be a priority, which is why lots of posters are hyping the Barry-for-Nocioni trade.
I'm watching the Detroit-Washington Summer League game, where the Wizards have several players who appeared on the Spurs' radar in some manner or another: Kyle Visser, Aaron Miles, and Dominic McGuire, a guy who was talked about a great deal on Spurstalk.
The announcers are creaming themselves over McGuire, and for once the player deserves it. For a guy picked at #47, he looks like the real deal and a steal. Perhaps he doesn't make it as a full-time starter, but he's playing efficiently and tough, hitting shots, collecting rebounds, getting steals and assists.
I'll remind you the Spurs selected their Wunderkind, Marcus Williams, at #33, a guy who looks like a sop re in high school in Summer League.
I think the spurs would have drafted byars before mcguire and he is doing about as well as williams. I do not think Mcguire was ever very high on their list, but then again nobody seems to know who was even on the list other than splitter and williams. It is not the first possible draft goof nor will it be the last..Get over it..

Anyway, it's taken a while to determine where the Spurs' draft mistakes have been -- Mahinmi over David Lee, etc., but barely two weeks have gone by and it's clear they have fouled up again. Regardless, it stands close to not mattering who they drafted, since they might not be able to keep him, anyway.
