Funeral for Malone's mother set for Tuesday

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) _ Funeral services are set for Tuesday for the mother of former Utah Jazz forward Karl Malone, who died Wednesday of an apparent heart attack.

Shirley Jackson Malone had not been ill.

The Andrews Funeral Home in El Dorado, Ark., said the funeral service would be Tuesday at Douglas Chapel Baptist Church. Burial will be at New Home Cemetery in Junction City, La.

The family asked that instead of flowers, donations be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Karl Malone, who recently left the Utah Jazz left the U.S. Olympic team Wednesday after learning of the death. Malone left the team hotel before practice and was flying home to Arkansas. It was not immediately known how long he would be away from the U.S. men's basketball team, which is in New York training for a qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico beginning Aug. 20.
