Tata has pulled the wraps off its long-discussed and highly-anticipated 1-lakh (around $2,500) car. The orb-like Tata Nano was unveiled at the New Delhi Auto Expo today, boasting a 30-horsepower 624-cc engine; a four-speed manual transmission; a disc/drum brake setup; room for five (based on the above photo); and claimed fuel economy of 54 US miles per gallon. There's no power steering, and you'll find more instrumentation on many wris ches -- the Nano has only a fuel gauge, speedometer, and oil light. Suspension? Well, it has one. Tata claims that the car meets safety and environmental standards, and we're sure it won't be long before tests show whether the car is up to snuff in those areas. Say o to the new "people's car," brought to you by the same folks who hope to sell you Jaguars in the not-so-distant future. We'd say that if all goes as planned, Tata's got just about every possible demographic covered.

It just had to be ugly.

I doubt it'll pass but if it only takes a few more grande to get it function this could work. Even a piece of for 6k is worth it. Look at Kia and how many cars they sold for 8,995 they were only good for about 75k but well worth it.

I put "30 horsepower" into google and it spit back listings for outboard boat motors and lawn mowers. How on earth are you supposed to be able to move a car with five human beings on that kind of power?

The original Volkswagen Beetle with the 1300cc engine had 32 HP. But a consumption that rivals most of today's SUVs

According to another article the top speed is 60mph.

Maybe if you can wait half an hour, have a good tail wind, and are going downhill.

Reminds me of the movie the Odd Couple II when they hitch a ride in that old car and people start walking by them.

Well the aforementioned Beetle with 32HP was capable of 75-80 MPH, with a 0 to 60 in roughly 17 secs.

    And it was much heavier.

Hahahahaha - "fits 5"!? Wouldn't fit one of me!

However, with my human ecologist hat on, we should all be driving sewing-machines like that around our cities. It is absurdly wasteful in energy and non-renewable resource terms to sit in traffic jams getting 15 mpg in huge, inefficient vehicles. In fact, if I was dictator, big cars would only be allowed outside cities, and inside cities the roads would be dominated by public transport, tiny cars and bikes of all kinds.
