Nice.
Fans of this team have been blessed for the last 19 years. It's been awesome.
If someone had said a couple of weeks ago that the Spurs would be the first team in the West to win 50 games he/she would have been laughed out the door.
Obviously not the first to 50 in the league, but in an uber-compe ive conference and despite some huge struggles along the way, the Spurs are the first West team to reach 50 wins this season.
Reaching the 50-win plateau has become ho-hum around here, but I still remember a day when getting to 50 wins was a major accomplishment for most teams. Like some other clubs that were the best in the association during long eras, the Spurs have made the exceptional seem routine. This is their 9th consecutive 50 win season; it's their 11th straight season of winning 50 games or the equivalent. It's also their 16th season with 50 or more wins in the last 19 seasons. Say what you will, but those aren't just routine accomplishments.
As best I can tell, the Celtics best run of seasons like that was 12 years long (1956-57 through 1967-68). The Lakers had a 12-year run of 50+ win seasons during the Showtime era (1979-80 through 1990-91).
9 straight (11 if you base it on winning percentages) is nothing to scoff at, and it's not the normal way things go.
Nice.

They went over it last night on the Spurs broadcast. The Lakers have the record of 12, and the Celtics have like 2 runs of 10 years. The Spurs should totally own this by the time Timmy hangs them up, barring any catastrophic injuries. He's got 4 more seasons under contract, which would make 13. I don't even think it's a stretch if everyone is reasonably healthy. Spurs have averaged a .709 win % over his career which works out to 58 wins in a full season.
Not only have the Spurs won the equivalent of 50 for 11 straight years, they have had 10 of those 11 with 56 wins or more, if they hit 56 this year. Only in 2000 did they drop to "only" 53 wins.
I was at the game last night, so I didn't see that.
I don't see that the Celtics had 2 runs of 10+ years; by my count, they had 2 runs of 9+ years -- but I'll admit that I'm just eyeballing numbers.
I'm also basing my count on winning percentages and not just getting to 50 wins. A 50 win season equates to a .610 winning percentage, so my count is based on the number of consecutive times that a team's winning percentage reached that number. I think someone manipulates the numbers by sticking hard and fast to a 50 win season, when 49 wins in an 80-game season is the same accomplishment.
I agree with you about win %s, but the NBA would never grant us that boon. If the Spurs are going to get this, it will have to be with 50 win seasons over the next four years.
As for the Celtics, I may have gotten that wrong. It was a pretty quick graphic and discussion. If anyone taped the game last night, can you get us the facts and figures?
The Spurs have had less than 30 losses for 11 straight years.
What's amazing is that they were still the 1st Western Conference team to reach 50 this season, despite the uber-compe ive nature of the conference this year. Last week they were in 6th place and despite having dropped 4 straight games in the regular season for the first time in a while, they still got to the magic # of 50.
How can it be the 11th straight equivalent season? Other than the 99 season, every other year was a complete schedule. Which other season are you counting?
EDIT: never mind, duh.
... I thought I was in the Finley thread...how'd I end up here???
Where'd I park my car?!!
I watched the game on the tube and I saw the stat that they put up as well. They said that the Lakers had 12 consecutive seasons of 50+ wins ('79-'80 to '90-'91), the Celtics did it for 10 consecutive seasons ('58-'59 to '67-'68), and the Celtics did it again for 9 consecutive seasons ('79-'80 to '87-'88). The Spurs have just surpassed the 50 win plateau for the 9th consecutive season.
Are we spoiled or what?
This has been a nice run and until Timmy retires it will continue. I agree with ChuckD - barring injury we should have 13 straight when his contract runs out.![]()
Are Chuck and Solid D related? Sons of Sandra D perhaps?
That sure is one incredible streak. For as long as I can remember 50 wins was the gold standard for a team having a "good regular season", and this season there could be a 50 win team in the lottery. Insane.
And we Spurs fans are armed with yet another handy stat to bash the critics over the head with when they try to play the "not a dynasty" card.

Spurs Hit 50 Again
By Lisa Brooks
ESPN Research
The Spurs now have 50 wins on the season, good for their ninth consecutive 50-win season. Since the NBA went to an 82-game season in 1967-68, there have been only two teams to accomplish the feat of winning 50-or-more games in more than eight consecutive seasons. The Los Angeles Lakers had 12 straight 50+ win seasons from 1979-80 through 1990-91, winning five NBA Championships during that streak. Also the Boston Celtics had a stretch of nine straight 50+ win seasons from 1979-80 through 1987-88, winning three NBA Championships.
Of note, the Spurs will play 18 games throughout the month of March, including six sets of back-to-backs. That is the highest game total and most back-to-backs played in any one month by a Spurs team in franchise history.
Here is a look at the active streaks.
Most Consecutive 50-Win Seasons ( Active)
Team Seasons
Spurs 8
Pistons 7 (including current season)
Mavs 7
Suns 3
^^^Mavs are going to have to win 5 of their last 10 to keep that from going down the drain.
Solid is my bro.![]()

I saw that ESPN article as well and wondered why they had left off the Celtics' 10 consecutive season stretch of 50+ wins, but then I noticed the "Since the NBA went to an 82-game season in 1967-68". That makes the Celtics' run even more impressive, that they won 50+ games in 10 consecutive seasons without playing 82 games in 9 of those seasons.
