Suns Again Trying To Lure Barry To Phoenix

Sources have confirmed that Brent Barry has had discussions with Phoenix about possibly becoming a Sun, the East Valley Tribune is reporting.
The Suns, along with the Rockets, tried to sign Barry after his contract was bought out by the Sonics last season, but Barry decided to return to the Spurs.
The San Antonio Express-News said Barry is also being courted by the Lakers, and that the Houston Rockets are prepared to offer him their $1.9 million biannual exception, which the Suns have already used on Grant Hill.
Why have we not heard of the Spurs being interested in bringing him back?
It seems like a foregone conclusion hes leaving
It's a shame that he'll end up leaving and we'll get stuck with another year of Finley....
Intern discussions.
Fact is we heard a lot of teams being interested in Barry almost none in Finley.
So either teams don't want Finley or Spurs have made a strong commitment to Finley and his agent said to teams interested in Finley that he will likely re-sign with Spurs.
And if it's B then our front office is still asleep at the wheel.
Pop has always like more Finley than Barry. If Spurs have one roster spot available for a shooter, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Pop bringing back Finley and letting Barry goes.
Most of Spurstalk's posters (including myself) rather have Barry back but we aren't Pop.
ive never seen pop write or say........i like finley more then barry.......show me and ill believe....fact is both are old, yet both can still contribute..unfortunately they both are on our team,...... who goes, who comes, has yet tobe determined.......
good player, but not a Ginobili, Parker or Duncan. Not going to lose too much sleep over this one, plenty of prospects out there that are younger and can not only shoot the 3 but throw it down pretty nicely as well. Hmmmmmmm J.R. Smith comes to mind.
I know I would.
On the plus side for you guys, if Darius Miles does go to Phoenix, Steve Kerr did you guys a favor in punking Portland. lol
I'm sure the Spurs are interested in keeping Barry but I think it's telling that he opted out. I don't think it has anything to do with Pop "favoring" Finley or the Spurs are secretly committed to Finley or anything like that.
I don't expect either one to be back though it is strange that haven't heard anything on Finley. If nothing else he's a legit 3 point shooter and teams can always use one of those on the bench.
time for a change........................
.....egnahc a rof emit
he is an exellent fit for Suns. He would get more minutes also. He should go for his sake.
I wish we can resign barry and sign maggette
i prefer to sign Finley and not Barry, Barry is almost 40 and Finley just 35, Finley can be pleased with the Minimum and Barry not, and now that we have a back up PG we dont need the PG skills of Barry.
I still just don't understand how and why the Spurs would choose Finley over Barry. What possible justification? Other than possibly if they think Barry's injury will come back. At this point in their careers, neither player is starter material. You would be keeping them primarily to ensure veteran leadership on the bench and to have a scorer who can come off the bench. I think Barry is a much more consistent offensive player who's 3 point shooting is still right on and could help the Spurs spread the floor come playoff time and he has a lot better ball handling skills than Finley. So why Finley over Barry? Unless he's somehow cheaper, but honestly either should be relatively cheap to keep.
i think barrys value is much more important than finleys right now. even though hes older
spurs may think hill will ran backup point
so they do not need barry as much now
barry could ran point so barry to me was worth more finley
I think of Finley as being more of a mentor than barry. Although I like both I would choose barry over findog.
I can picture Barry helping a team like the Rockets immensely in the postseason. They've always been a team that has had trouble scoring, esp if one of McGrady or Yao is having an offnight. Playing Brent Barry in that system would open up a lot of room for McGrady and Yao to operate.
I would like to see the Spurs keep only one of the two...hopefully, Hairston or Gist will replace the other. Hill, Hairston, and Mahinmi is a start in getting some youth injected into this team.
Salary Cap question time.
Barry was traded to and then cut by the Sonics (becoming an FA). He re-signed with us for the pro-rated Vet Min (Therefore his bird rights therefore went away.), and then has opted-out. As he has been signed for less than 2 years, he qualifies as a non-bird FA. From Larry Coon's salary cap faq, question # 19, http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#19
Does this mean, since Barry was signed for the pro-rated min, can we resign him using this exception for the Vet Min + 20%, without eating any of our other exceptions? Consider, the vet min for a player with Barry's years in 08/09 is $1,262,275. 120% of that is $1,514,730. The LLE is $1.91 Million.NON-BIRD EXCEPTION -- This is also a component of the Veteran Free Agent exception. Players who qualify for this exception are called "Non-Qualifying Veteran Free Agents" in the CBA. They are veteran free agents who are neither Qualifying Veteran Free Agents nor Early Qualifying Veteran Free Agents, either because they haven't met the criteria, or because they are Early Bird free agents following the second season of their rookie scale contract and whose team renounced the Early-Bird exception. This exception allows a team to re-sign its own free agent to a salary starting at 120% of the player's salary in the previous season, 120% of the minimum salary, or the amount needed to tender a qualifying offer (if the player is a restricted free agent -- see question number 36), whichever is greater. Raises are limited to 8% of the salary in the first year of the contract, and contracts are limited to five seasons when this exception is used.
Starting January 10 of each season, this exception begins to reduce in value. See question number 20 for details.
Does anyone suspect that Barry still wants to be in SA, but in the discussions last year (when he left the Sonics), it was pointed out to him that he could get a nice 20% salary bump for this year by opting out, allowing us to use our non-bird exception? Is he playing the same "wink wink, nudge nudge" game that was played last season?
