Kobe(again) scores effortless 31pts tonite. I'm still trying to figure out why we haven't gone out to do a trade for a younger SF. Bruce's age has really shown this season. I thought the reason why he is starting was specifically for defensive reasons(defending the other team's best scoring g/f), but Bowen hasn't done the job this year.

I know Finley's defense is not anywhere near, but at the same time Finley does demand a defender to guard him. I would be very interested in seeing Finley and Barry on the floor together starting if Manu is really coming off the bench for a couple reasons: 1. Barry and Finley are better offensively
    2. Spreading the floor when Duncan gets double-teamed.

Teams are able to double on Duncan and leave Bowen open. With both Barry & Finley on the floor with Duncan, teams would not double on Duncan as much in fear of leaving either barry or finley open. I really like Bowen, but I hope Popovich hasn't forgotten that Bowen's almost 36 years old and he is not able to guard Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady, Lebron James, and other teams' best scorers. It's like they say: when you have to make your defender work, it affects their offense & energy. I think offense is going to be very important especially when we are not getting the production out of our centers that we need come playoff time. Any thoughts on possibly replacing Bowen with Finley/Barry?

Bowen made Kobe work tonight. He did a decent job on him ... not awesome but decent. The times when Kobe really got going were actually when Manu was guarding him.

Anyway, I wouldn't even consider starting Finley or Barry over Bowen. The next person who starts over Bowen should be a young, defensive-minded SF. And that probably won't be for a while.

Bowen guarded Kobe about as well as he can be guarded. A lot of Kobe's points were off of double picks where he'd just catch and shoot fadaways. How is Bowen supposed to stop that?

And after starting 10-for-15, Kobe hit only three of his last ten shots. And all three of those were highly contested.

Did Kobe even miss when Manu was guarding him?

So that next time Kobe can drop 40, maybe 50 points on us.

There's definitely reason to be concerned about how the Spurs look at the 3 moving forward. Hopefully they can pick up a prospect with either their 1st or Milwaukee's 2nd in this year's draft. But that's a crapshoot. Maybe they can find a vet under the age of 50 this summer. Of course, that player would have to be willing to sign a 1 year deal. Sanikidze is out there, but I've seen nothing to indicate that he's close to being NBA ready. If the Spurs hadn't ed around, they could've had Maggette.

I'm sorry, but enough of the Bowen love. Dude is getting his ass used almost every game.

Also, why is he getting 20+ touches a game? WTF?

That was Manu helping, not being the primary defender.

It was weird because Manu, in the past, has pretty decent on Kobe when he's had to guard him. But today, he was horrible when he had to be his primary defender.

That block was sweet redemption though.

The Spurs got banged around a lot today. I hope Manu's face, Tony's hand and everything else heals up quickly.

I thought Bowen's defense was ok, not as good as I've seen him play but certainly not as bad as other players in the league. I honestly think the reason why Kobe didn't score as much in the 4th was because Kobe had to guard Manu for quite a while and that took alot of energy out of Kobe during that period. That's just my observation. I am kinda shocked people haven't seen Bowen's defense decline over the last year or so. i'm a loyal fan and that's why I do raise concerns, but i gotta hand it to you guys. you guys are incredibly loyal.

I think most spur fans want to get a younger player to groom to take bowen's place eventually

????? He cant play d for and shoots too much, I dont think he is what we really need. Bowen played pretty damn good d on Kobe, and hit a huge 3 towards the end of the game. Im getting a little tired of these threads everytime the Spurs play a superstar. Do you really expect Kobe, T Mac or Dirk to get held to 10 points? The only thing that will prevent that is the players themselves. It would be one thing if Cuttino Mobley or someone like that dropped 31, but were talking about KOBE BRYANT. Dude scored 81 points. Bowen might be getting old, b ut all these idiots talking about benching him because he cant hold MVP caliber players to 10 points is idiotic

Well, I'd be happy with anything below their averages for starters.

31 points on 25 shots isn't exactly a scorching. It's all about how hard you make him work for his points. Kobe's going to get his. You just don't want him scoring his normal pts/FGA of like 1.4

Now, TMac DID spank the ass the other night, going for 37 on 24 shots. That's outstanding.

Dumbass. You know nothing about the NBA. You don't shut down a premier scorer, ever. Bowen never has. He just makes them work their asses off, and tries not to send them to the line in the process.

Did anyone watch some of those shots Kobe was hitting, or just read about it on the internets? The shots Kobe was hitting on Bowen were extremely high degree of difficulty, fading away, fading sideways, with a hand in his face.

The shots he hit on Manu were much easier.
