Spurs tipoff not too far off

    Jeff McDonald - Express-News
The NBA released its 2008-09 schedule Wednesday, and Shaquille O'Neal and Steve Nash will be at the AT&T Center to help the Spurs open the season Oct.29. Spurs beat writer Jeff McDonald breaks down the team's schedule.

    Glamour games

    • vs. Suns, Oct. 29: Nash, Shaq and the Suns are in town for the first time since the Spurs de-pantsed them — again — in the playoffs.

    • at Suns, Dec. 25: No white Christmas for the Spurs. Even Santa Claus will be wearing short pants.

    • vs. Lakers, Jan. 14: Kobe heads to the AT&T Center for the first time as an MVP.

    • at Celtics, Feb. 8: The Spurs meet Paul Pierce, self-proclaimed “best player on the planet.”

    • vs. Cavaliers, Feb. 27: Spurs welcome the guy who might actually be the best in the world (or at least in the Eastern time zone), LeBron James.

    Grudge matches

    • vs. Mavericks, Nov. 4: Dallas slipped in West pecking order last season, but they remain a team Spurs fans love to beat.

    • vs. Rockets, Nov. 14: Welcome back, Brent Barry. Now say something funny for Sports Illustrated.

    • vs. Pistons, Dec. 2: Detroit dealt Spurs a humiliating defeat at the AT&T Center last season, then nearly lost at home.

    • at Hornets, Dec. 17: The Spurs return to the Big Easy for the first time since Game 7 victory in the Western Conference semifinals.

    • at Jazz, Jan. 27: Utah was a league-best 37-4 at home last season, and crowd seems predisposed to hating everything in silver and black.

    Better than you think

    • at Trail Blazers, Oct. 31: Halloween against Greg Oden, the league's first 47-year-old rookie of the year candidate.

    • vs. Miami, Nov. 7: Michael Beasley will be Oden's top compe ion for rookie honors.

    • vs. 76ers, Jan. 3: The Spurs get their first crack at the newly Elton Brand(ed) 76ers, everyone's dark horse in the East.

    • at Magic, Dec. 18: Orlando proved last season it can play with anybody in the league, including the Spurs.

    • at Warriors, Feb. 2: Don Nelson no longer has Baron Davis, but he does have a new toy in Corey Maggette, who shunned the Spurs.
