Rove: Obama Will Make Political Veep Pick
Suggests Choice Of Virginian Tim Kaine Would Be An "Intensely Political Choice" That Ignores Responsibilities Of Presidency

(CBS) Republican strategist Karl Rove said on Face The Nation Sunday that he expects presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama to choose a running mate based on political calculations, not the person's readiness for the job.

"I think he's going to make an intensely political choice, not a governing choice," Rove said. "He's going to view this through the prism of a candidate, not through the prism of president; that is to say, he's going to pick somebody that he thinks will on the margin help him in a state like Indiana or Missouri or Virginia. He's not going to be thinking big and broad about the responsibilities of president."

Rove singled out Virginia governor Tim Kaine, also a Face The Nation guest, as an example of such a pick.

"With all due respect again to Governor Kaine, he's been a governor for three years, he's been able but undistinguished," Rove said. "I don't think people could really name a big, important thing that he's done. He was mayor of the 105th largest city in America."

Rove continued: "So if he were to pick Governor Kaine, it would be an intensely political choice where he said, `You know what? I'm really not, first and foremost, concerned with, is this person capable of being president of the United States? What I'm concerned about is, can he bring me the electoral votes of the state of Virginia, the 13 electoral votes in Virginia?'"
    How do you spin this?

It's a terrible pick. VPs cant help you, they can only hurt. She undercuts his arguing against Obama being inexperienced. They're going to carry Alaska anyway. They're delusional if they think they're going to win this election on the backs of bitter Hillary dead-enders.

What do I want in a VP? Someone who can run the country if, God forbid, something happens to the president.

I'd rather not have someone whose primary qualifications include mayor of a town with 9000 people and governor of a state totally like any other in the union (not to mention with fewer people than Austin) with their hands on the football should McCain go down. And the man IS 72, and the office DOES age its occupants prematurely. At least he didn't choose Carly Fiorina. Kay Bailey would have been a far better choice.

Biden may not be the sharpest tool in the drawer but I'd take him over this rookie any day.

Oh, now I have to call you Mr. Pea Brain!

You are comparing apples and oranges!

Look more closely at the quote:

"he's been able but undistinguished," Rove said. "I don't think people could really name a big, important thing that he's done."

Palin has definitely distinguished herself. She has accomplished things. To take what Rove says about Kaine, and apply it to Palin is asinine.

This is ridiculous...how many left wing talking heads blasted McCain for being the same old crap we've had in Washington the past 30 years right before Obama picked an old white dude who has been in Washington for the past 30 years?

Do we need a thread for each one?

Ehhhhhhhh...he was Bush's cheif strategist years ago.

Im not even sure if "Cheif Strategist for the Republican Party" is an actual position.

Right now he's just a pundit for Fox News and he's writing a book.

Are Obamanites REALLY in here arguing experience is really, really, important.

At least Palin IS governor; Obama's experience post STATE legislator is "running for president", isn't it?

Also, you cats are being AWFUL sexist assuming her ONLY qualification is "being a woman". Have you not seen how giddy the Right Wingers are with this pick of a (something that should be taboo with them) Working Mother of Five? Her politics and commitment to conservatism were necessary.

    Hypocrites.

And there is how you spin!

    Winner winner!

She distinguished herself, how? No one even paid attention or knew who this woman was 24 hours ago. How is it if she's soooo distinguished did she remain so unknown? More so than Kaine.

What was her big accomplishment that netted her distinguish?

Stopping the bridge to nowhere from happening?

Because there was nothing the man did with distinction, so pointing this out continues to show he just doesn't have what it take. The size of the city doesn't matter hardly at all when you take action with distinction.

He had three years and accomplished nothing important. She accomplished plenty in less time. That's the key.

Think about those facts. If it was one year and did nothing, you could say nothing came up.

I wouldn't call Rove an "Obamanite." He slammed McCain's pick two weeks before McCain made it.

Look in the goddamn mirror, all I've heard all throughout the campaign season is Republicans harping on Obama's lack of experience...now they're all just fine and dandy with a newbie from Alaska.

    Hypocrites.

Rove is tremendously important to the GOP still and is only unofficial to the McCain campaign. Not sure if they'll make it official, but he's there.

When McCain started focusing his neg. messages? The celebrity stuff? That was Rove coming in.

    Who gives a about Kaine?

Palin has done many great things for Alaska. Look it up. Not only did she cut taxes and build up some state capital, she re-invested it! Holy ! I thought that made politicians melt.

Argue actual good work by a politician when Obama's greatest Senate achievement is preventing lobbyist from feeding politicians when they are sitting? Awesome..

How do you guys do this with a straight face?
