The Mavs are Anton Newcombe and the Brian Jonestown Massacre. The Suns are Courtney Taylor and the Dandy Warhols.
Think about it. Both teams had promising collections of talent and ultimately fell short of the prize. The Suns/Dandy Warhols got all the love from the press for their unique style, while the Mavs/Brian Jonestown Massacre were ignored, even though they were better and accomplished more. Although the Suns/Dandy Warhols managed to continue to work and put up a respectable output in their later years, the Mavs/Brian Jonestown Massacre, for all their one-time brilliance, melted down memorably and fell off the face of the earth.
