Cheney, Alberto Gonzales indicted by south Texas grand jury
    7:28 PM Tue, Nov 18, 2008

    http://crimeblog.dallasnews.com/arch...onzales-i.html

A grand jury in Willacy County, Texas, has indicted Vice President Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on charges related to alleged abuses of prisoners at federal detention centers, CNN and the Associated Press reported.

According to the Associated Press, the indictment is connected to Mr. Cheney's investment in the Vanguard Group. The company reportedly holds interests in the prison companies in charge of the federal detention centers.

Mr. Gonzales is accused of blocking an investigation into abuse at the detention centers while he was attorney general.

A spokesman for the vice president said he has not received an indictment.

Willacy County is on the US-Mexico border in the southern tip of Texas.
Will there be jail time for this?

I think someone put something in the water to make them go mad. Maybe they all have Mad Cow Disease? From wiki:

The elected officials of the tiny county, recently, have been entangled in a series of political controversies. Amongst other things, the District Attorney has sought the removal of the local sheriff, county clerk, and district clerk. Meanwhile, the Sheriff and the two clerks have pe ioned the district court for the removal of the District Attorney. In recent weeks, the District Attorney has gained even more attention for his actions concerning the dismissal of a Capital Murder charge against a confessed assailant because of, he claimed, an appropriate time to prepare. However, he found time to file, the very next day, a pe ion for the removal of the County Judge.

On November 18, 2008 a Willacy County grand jury indicted a number of political figures, including Vice President Cheney.

Indictments have not yet been made public and a district judge still has to sign the indictments. Two state district judges were also indicted along with State Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr.

In order for this not to be waived off by presidential pardon, it has to be presented as impeachment proceedings. And no one's going to do that. These guys are going to get away with torture, murder, and who knows what else.

dubya's admin getting away with everything, slipping uneventfully into wealthy retirement while the mismanaged country craters, while Paulsen and the financial sector rob taxpayers in broad daylight corrodes democracy and civility and voluntary compliance more than anything the close-minded, vicious "Christian" supremacists claim same-sex marriages will do.

Clinton didn't pursue the illegal Poppy Bush's crew did, and got rewarded by 8 years of smash-mouth witch-hunting. Now Obama is showing the same at ude, and will be punished by the Repugs and hate-media.

Did you guys even read my last post here? These people are just on some type of a fad of playiong with the law. None of this will pan out.

This is a grand jury that is obviously a joke. A county with a 2000 census population of 20,082. What peower do they have to indict over federal powers?

    Please explain.

If a federal official committed a crime in a county for which the official did not have immunity, the grand jury in a county with even a population of 20 could indict that official. The propriety of the indictment has nothing to do with the size of Willacy County -- but I'd be quite surprised if any of the charges alleged in the indictment occurred in Willacy County, which would make me wonder about the grand jury's jurisdiction.

That's a cute angle for an indictment, but nothing is going to happen to Cheney while he's in office. It will be interesting to see just what kind of pardons may be produced by the torture and DA firing shenanigans though.

So let me get this straight...

This "grand jury" expects Cheney to actually defend himself from this indictment?

Is this the same Cheney who didnt show up for a Congressional Indictment?

Seems as though the DA has vanished. Anyone see any black helicopters down
around Raymondville? I think Cheney hunts down in that country and lawyers
are one of his favorite birds, right?

I think there might be some for the DA firings. The torture ones would have to be spectacularly broad -- I don't think they could get away with the sheer number of names that would have to be named.

Nothing but a fine may ultimately come of this, but a conviction is a conviction and Cheney will join a very dubious crowd of ex-Bush officials that will have been convicted of a felony count..

Unfortunately I doubt that Cheney will be around long enough to see his conviction for torture, and even if he was I doubt that his health will allow him to spend much time in prison....he will ultimately will have to face jury in a much higher court than one here on earth...

they're not really getting away with it. Their names and legacies have been destroyed and they will always be associated with corruption, scandal and inhumanity.

Well understand the DA might have "made" the judge just a tad
unhappy today. Started screaming, throwing a hissey fit, pounding
on the table about how unfair the judge was.

This cool weather sure bring the squirrels out. Especially in Raymondville.

Given the seemingly-apparent want of jurisdiction in Willacy County, I'm not sure that even a fine is a reasonable expectation from this indictment.

Abuses of prosecutorial power like this one -- prosecutorial grandstanding like this -- just piss me off.

Yep. It's a circus, and DA Guerra is the new ringleader. Gregorio de La Rosa and the defendants both deserve better.

But I wouldn't call his case threadbare or his persecution complex unfounded. His office has already convicted three county commissioners on prison related bribery. Mr. De LaRosa's family has collected $47 million from the indicted prison company for wrongful death. An appeals court has ruled the special prosecutor appointed to investigate Willacy DA Guerra was improperly appointed, and all charges against him were dropped after he lost the election this month.

Just guessing here, but I think the charges against Cheney and Gonzales will be dismissed.

The prison has already paid a wrongful death judgment, so it may have something to answer for here.
