Dallas has overvalued Stackhouse's trade value
Dallas Mavericks want to keep Stackhouse for playoff stretch
By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News
PHOENIX – There are lots of people who believe Jerry Stackhouse has played his last game for the Mavericks, but the team continues to harbor hope that he can be a useful player in the second half of the season.
President of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said the Mavericks continue to receive calls about Stackhouse, but that trade talks have not produced anything substantive. Stackhouse played eight of the first nine games this season, but has been inactive since Nov. 16 with a right foot injury.
Team officials said he is about a month away from being healthy enough to play.
That doesn't mean the 6-6 swingman isn't healthy enough to be traded. But that's not the direction the Mavericks are headed in at the moment.
"Our plan is to have him ready for a playoff push," Nelson said. "Our focus is to get him healthy for the playoffs."
Nelson added that the team is listening to anybody who calls. "That's our job," he said. And the Mavericks are open to a deal as long as it makes sense for all concerned.
What the deal almost certainly won't include is any player coming back to the Mavericks who has a contract extending beyond the 2010 season. Owner Mark Cuban, Nelson and coach Rick Carlisle have worked diligently to ensure the Mavericks will have money under the salary cap for the fertile free-agent class of 2010.
"I wouldn't say it couldn't happen," Nelson said, "but it would really have to be a significant no-brainer."
Those sorts of deals don't come along very often.
The Mavericks, who went into Friday night's game against the Suns with a 22-13 record, have played well enough that they don't feel compelled to be active trade seekers. But as Cuban always says, they will be opportunistic if a deal makes sense.
The players understand that the next five-plus weeks before the trading deadline will include rumors on a daily basis.
"When you sign up for this deal, that's just part of the gig," Jason Kidd said. "You could be traded, for good or bad. The thing is to be professional, if you are one of those candidates. You just have to roll with it.
"We got a lot of talented guys. I'm not going to say Cuban or Coach or Donnie would ever close the door on trying to make us better. That's just the nature of the business. But I like the group of guys we got. We haven't even played our best basketball, and we've found ways to win games ugly."
Don't sweat it: Brandon Bass has always had trouble getting to the free throw line. But he's never had much of a problem once he got there.
Until Thursday. He missed four of 12 free throw attempts against the Knicks.
Considering he was shooting 87.5 percent from the stripe going into the game, his lack of success could have been a concern.
"He's the kind of guy that if he misses four free throws out of 12, he'll go to the gym and shoot 2,000 the next day," Carlisle said, adding that getting to the line was "a byproduct of aggression and persistence. He's got to continue with that."

what the ? Does the FO even have a plan right now?
It seems to me like they don't know exactly what to do next. They don't know if they want to trade Stack for draft pick, cash, just wait for his contract to expire, and then start to rebuild. Or do they want to trade him for another piece who can help the Mavs contend. But they are unsure whether this team can contend.
I say the windows has been locked down, time to rebuild.
Jerry house... There I said it, everyone's been wanting to say that for years...
Um, What? Why?
No one team is untradable on mavs team, except Dirk and Stackhouse. We need Dirk to keep Mavs staying in playoffs range and we need jerry to make Jasons look a little bit valuable.
Keep in mind that last year Markie Mark swore up and down that "we love our team" and anybody who thought there might be something in the works for Kidd needed to "step away from the crackpipe." Who knows what they really think and what they're really doing.
