    Sources: Olympiacos eyes Marbury

    By Chris Sheridan
    ESPN.com

NEW YORK -- Stephon Marbury to Greece? It is being considered on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Representatives of the Greek club Olympiacos contacted the New York Knicks earlier in the day in an effort to begin a dialogue on what it would take to get Marbury released from his contract, sources told ESPN.

Olympiacos recently lost Josh Childress for six to eight weeks after he returned to the United States for surgery to repair a sports hernia, and the club is seeking to acquire a replacement player in time for the start of the Top 16 phase of the Euroleague season, which begins Jan. 29 and runs through March 12.

Marbury has been exiled since early in the season by the Knicks, who have been unable to make any substantial progress in buyout talks with the former All-Star. Marbury is in the final season of his contract and is making $20.8 million to sit on the sidelines. He has offered to give back $1 million to secure his release, but the Knicks have asked for more. Also, Knicks president Donnie Walsh remains convinced that a viable trade opportunity involving Marbury could arise between now and the Feb. 19 trade deadline.

Marbury is aware of Olympiacos' interest but has had no contact with the club, according to a source close to the Knicks, who said he expected additional dialogue on the subject over the next few days.

It would be highly unusual, but not unprecedented, for a Greek club to broker a buyout between an NBA team and a player. In the summer of 2007 when the Houston Rockets acquired the rights to Luis Scola from San Antonio for Vassilis Spanoulis, the Greek guard had grown so disenchanted with the NBA that he was willing to forego the $4 million he was due to be paid. Olympiacos' rival, Panathinakos, ended up paying the Spurs an undisclosed sum to secure Spanoulis' release.

Chris Sheridan covers the NBA for ESPN Insider.

Uh!? What is Oly trying to do? Marbury is an extremely poor fit for European bball and it's not like they need to replace Childress to overcome the EL top-16. Are these guys trying to ruin European basketball, like the Russian ers?

I'm still not sure if this is really true though, I'll try to know tomorrow.

They are desperate. They gets players like Vujcic, Halperin, Childress, Pelekanos, Papaloukas, Erceg and all these expensive free agents and $70 millions in budget for the team and still they probably cannot beat PAO in Greek Cup and Greek Championship. So they will try anything to accomplish this.

I don't know if he's a liar, but this was published in some Greek newspapers yesterday. Greek press is usually very inventive when it comes to sports though.

Yes so if I mention something from Greek press they call me a liar. I am not a liar if I mention something from the press and it does not happen. Just like American would not be a liar if they mention something from US press and does not happen.

But in this forum NEVER are any Americans called liars for such thing but I am ALWAYS called one for it. Is very racist.

Meh... Papaloukas is old and tired, Bourousis is playing through injuries, Childress is just a role-player... I don't think they have enough quality to beat CSKA, Real or Barça, for example, in spite of all the names.

In the greek league, I saw their 1st match of the season, PAO completely abused them. I don't know, that's going to be close. PAO seems a more solid team though.

Anyway, the thing is that I highly doubt Marbury can fix the issues they have.

Tell this to all the other fans here that kept say he would dominate and destroy Greek League. I try to tell them a player in his level would not do much in Greece.

    Olympiakos

    In English Olympiacos

Olympics is Ολυμπιακοί or Olympiakoi is how would appear to English speaker.

Club is actually Olympiakos so actually would be Olympic not Olympics.

    No you is.

    Example:

You said all NBA fans said Childress would dominate when in fact, not all NBA fans said that, therefore you lied.

All the papers are reporting it now. Very interesting. I think Marbury could help them but I want the Knicks to take one up the rear for the way they treated Starbury. Plus I want Marbury to go to the Lakers or Celtics to blow them up.

    Make it so

Spanoulis gave back all his salary for two years and then PAO sent Spurs about $1.2 millions net money in cash (in NBA way would be like $2.4 millions). Spurs would not release him because they wanted him very much. So PAO had to pay to get him. Also was where Spanoulis made agreement if they let him leave he would give Spurs always first choice over any NBA teams if he came back to NBA.
