    Spurs among NBA leaders in merchandise sales
    San Antonio Business Journal - by W. Scott Bailey

    The NBA says the San Antonio Spurs currently rank 10th in the league in team merchandise sales.

    But the NBA’s top 15 list of most popular player jerseys does not include a single member of the Black & Silver.

    NBA merchandising officials say Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant’s jersey ranks No. 1 in terms of popularity.

    Rounding out the top 5 most popular NBA jerseys:

    2. Kevin Garnett, Celtics;
    3. LeBron James, Cavaliers;
    4. Chris Paul, New Orleans;
    5. Allen Iverson, Pistons.

    The Lakers top the list of the NBA’s most popular teams in terms of merchandise sales.

    Boston, New York, Cleveland, Chicago, Phoenix, Detroit and New Orleans are ranked 2 through 9 on the top teams list, respectively.

    NBA officials say December 2008 was the most popular sales month for the NBA Store and NBA.com in league history, with combined sales up 10 percent over the same time in 2007.

    Since the start of the season, NBA officials say jersey sales are up 40 percent.

    This is merely an effect of the biased mass media and a plot by David Stern to promote other teams. But despite the Spurs small market, they are doing well.

    hmm, 10th is pretty low for the best or maybe 2nd best team in the NBA over the last decade, and It's not like SA is that small of a market, plus we have the argies and some French fans, yes 10th is pretty disappointing.

    No market in France. In France it's soccer and rugby for the jerseys the rest well.

    I'm not sure Duncan has ever been that high, I'm looking.

    Top 10 most (and least) popular jerseys from the past 10 years
    By J.E. Skeets

    The NBA Store on Fifth Avenue in New York tipped off their 10th anniversary celebrations yesterday by unveiling the store's Most Popular Jerseys sold from the past decade. Here's a look at the list:

    1. Michael Jordan
    2. Kobe Bryant
    3. Allen Iverson
    4. LeBron James
    5. Shaquille O'Neal
    6. Tracy McGrady
    7. Dwyane Wade
    8. Jason Kidd
    9. Vince Carter
    10. Tim Duncan

    Nothing too surprising, really. I'm pretty sure most of you would've slotted Jordan, Kobe and Iverson somewhere in the top three spots. With that said, I'm just as perplexed as the Sports Biz's Darren Rovell about Tim Duncan cracking the top ten. I mean, who in the world is buying a No. 21 Spurs' jersey in downtown Midtwon Manhattan? Seriously. Damn, tourists.

    But enough about the most popular jerseys; you're more interested in the least popular jerseys, right? Of course you are! So, after the jump, a look at the NBA Store's worst selling jerseys from the past ten years.

    10. Clay Bennett, Sonics
    9. David Stern, Sonics
    8. Rod Strickland, Bullets (half-smoked lettering)
    7. Jerome James, Knicks
    6. Any 2008 All-Star Game jersey
    5. Michael Jordan's #12, Bulls (story)
    4. Rudy Gay, Grizzlies
    3. Vince Carter, Team Canada
    2. Chris Andersen, Hornets (special edition)
    1. Chris Quinn, Heat

    Iverson??????????????? WTF
    Any time a popular player switches teams (or numbers), it makes sense that their jersey sales would take a huge jump. I'm guessing Iverson wouldn't be as high (still on the list, for sure) had he not been traded to Detroit.

    Exactly. As evidenced by Garnett's absence from even the top 15 in 2007, vs. his current #2 standing.

    Do the sheeple here not understand that sales are driven by the mass media?

    Consumers are sheeple, they buy what the media talks about and tells them to buy. The mass media doesn't want you to buy a Tim Duncan T-shirt, is this not simple? If the media wanted you to buy Tim Duncan T-shirts, he would be promoted to all the high schools, boys and girls, as a role model for sportsmanship, fundamentals, and family values, along with his unparalleled skills.

    The fact that is not happening explains why Duncan is not # 1.

    Learn the mass media tricks, before you become duped!

    Buy Tim Duncan T-shirts!

    I did.

    ^ So then why is Kobe #1?
    IMHO, Kobe would probably be #2 or #3 on this list if he wouldn't have changed his jersey number. He is by far the world's most popular basketball star who plays for one of the biggest markets, so it makes sense that he is at the top of the list. Add that to the Lakers' return to prominence and you get the top spot.
