There is no doubt that whenever Allen Iverson decides to retire, he will be remembered as not only one of the greatest prolific scorers in league history, but a true warrior on the court. Yet, over the past few seasons, and in particular this one, the man that was known as simply “The Answer” has been the wrong one. When Iverson was teamed up with Carmelo Anthony in Denver, it was a marketing department’s dream, yet the results on the court did not amount to expectations. The Nuggets shipped out Iverson to Detroit for Chauncey Billups, and at least so far, they have looked to be the winners of that trade.

Since joining the Pistons, Iverson started 50 games this season, and Detroit is 6 games under .500(22-28). Detroit, who has returned to their core lineup of Richard Hamilton and Rodney Stuckey starting, have seemed to turned things around with Iverson sidelined with a back injury. The Pistons have broken an 8 game losing streaks with impressive wins at Orlando and at Boston over the past few days. With the Pistons sitting at 29-29, the season is at a crossroads. Clearly, the Pistons should make the playoffs in the East, and if they do, they will give the Celtics, Magic, or Cavs quite a run in the first round.

However, after this season, where will Iverson land? Detroit will not be re-signing him, and any team that winds up bringing him in will not pay him the money he may be looking for. The bigger factor is will Iverson be willing to go to a situation in which he is not one of the primary go-to guys again? This experience in Detroit has been a reality check for Iverson, showing that he may not be the top flight franchise player he was just a few seasons ago. There is certainly a market for Iverson, however it should be very interesting to see who makes a play for him.

Iverson needs to be the biggest player on his team to make the team good, i.e. 76ers.

He's the answer to my d-league 2 Fantasy team... every last one of you that doesn't think he deserves more minutes and to have the Pistons offense run entirely through him.

Just put Iverson, T-Mac, Franchise, Marbury, and Bonzi Wells on one team and give them a servicable center and tell them to run and gun. Either that team works or they break up because they would all argue who should bring the ball up and shoot.

Whereever he will be the 6th man is the best place for him. Needs to dominate the ball to be effective. Doesn't create for others, no defense. Perfect spark off the bench. Deal with it AI. Your glory days are thankfully over you bas .

Jerome James and Eddie Curry would both fit in perfectly.

Allen Iverson is a player that I respect AS a player because he seems to be able to play through any number of injuries, willing himself to compete on the court in hopes of winning.

The problem here is that AI doesn't realize his limits. He's been strictly a volume shooter in his NBA career, needing an absurd amount of touches and shots to be truly effective. The problem is that he does not score at a high enough clip to really justify the amount of time with the ball he has. He's a career 42% shooter, and that actually goes DOWN if you add in the playoffs, where he just ekes in at over 40% career. For a #1 option on ANY team, that's horrendous. My friend and I have a running dialogue where we examine 3rd and 4th tier players in the NBA, betting that if they had the touches AI did, they would put up similar point totals.

This isn't meant to say that Iverson is a horrible player. He's obviously got obscene ball handling skills (but turns the ball over 3+ times per game) and he's tenacious on D with 2+ steals per. But even then, he's an undersized defender and can be a liability on the court. He's also a career 77% free throw shooter, which is pretty low for a primary guard who's been an MVP and considered in the past one of the best at his position.

Iverson is a tenacious player. But there's a price to pay with that, and for AI, it's that he never knows when to back off. Volume shooters like him need the rock to be effective -- and sadly, he just isn't effective enough to justify giving him a loooooot of looks.

He might be good as a 6th man, if he could be forced into that role. But as much as I like Iverson's will to win, I cannot say that I've ever really been consistently impressed with his abilities. Sure, he can make some amazing plays, but what good does that do a team if he makes two amazing plays and follows it up with three misses? I don't care about highlights. I care about the ball going into the tin. And he just doesn't do it as well as he should.
