    Chump change.

A computer hibernating uses almost no power. Running your central A/C for 15 minutes a day uses more energy than a computer sleeping for 18 hours and in use for 6 hours a day.

A/C, heating, and clothes dryers by far make up most residential energy usage. There's lots of places you can see wattage usage and see how much it costs in your state, like http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/howmuch.html

And how much of this 2.8 billion is caused by businesses leaving their massive datacenters powered on 24/7?

most comps these day are using good system setups that uses less energy....idle or hibernating overnight even the programs they used dont suck up alot of cpu power

What kind of Power supplies do you use? I use Antec on my systems, and I've never had a problem with one going bad even though I leave my system on overnight every night, often doing heavy-duty jobs like video compression. If you're having a lot of problems with yours', it might be worth checking into buying one of these next time you build a system or your power supply dies.

Generic ty ones, but I also routinely charge a lot of USB type . I'm guessing it's a combination of those two factors. And really, it doesn't matter, they're cheap. But all things equal, why not take two seconds to turn it off?

And I shouldn't have made it out like I go through a ton of them. I've had two break between two computers since 2002.

I don't turn mine off because I often have my computer working when I sleep. That's the best time to have it doing heavy-duty tasks like video compression. I also don't like having to search for and re-open all the files I was working on / reading, lose the state of the programs I have running (for instance, a LISP interpreter I may have had on), the do entation windows and sex sites I might have open in firefox, etc. Plus, waiting for the computer to finish bootstraping sucks ass.

I'm guilty of adding money to that figure. Since my computer is the ICS host for other computers in my house to connect to the internet, I leave my computer on 24/7. I tried putting my computer in hibernation mode, but it shuts off internet access for the other computers.

Been doing that for a few years and never had a problem with my powersupply.

You can leave your PC on for 1000 years and not even use up 5% of the energy to put someone to death.

Has anyone mentioned any of these?

I wonder how many tree huggers would like us not to celebrate Xmas.
