My mouse dies on my laptop. It happened now and then, at first I could switch ports and it would be fine. Then that didn't work but if I shut down and restarted it would work.

At first it seemed to happen after my scan ran, I had the scan ignore the mouse. That helped for a little while.

Now I'm getting a message that says 'Power surge on hub port: A USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port.' It has me unplug it and reset. I stopped using one port but it's happening on the other one now.

Today I can't use it at all. The mouse works for a few minutes and dies.

I have a guy to call but I'd like some idea of what I'm looking at.

Any ideas on what could be causing it and what it will take to fix it?

    Thanks guys.

Oh, I did get a new mouse, didn't matter. And, I have the touch pad disabled, I don't use it.

Are USB Ports dying a sign that the motherboard, or parts of it, is going?

I've tried 3 mice, one brand new. None work.

Ports look fine as far as I can see with a flashlight.

    I'm miserable.

In case I am away for awhile if you can get back online find the brand and model number of your notebook go to the site go to downloads and download a chip set or bios driver maybe a USB driver if you see one install, reboot, and then put your mouse back into the usb.

remember if your USB ports are disabled you have to go into setup and enable them.

Move him off your laptop and put him in the garbage can.

He shouldn't have been on your laptop even if he wasn't dying because he might break it.

Check the bottom post in this thread

    http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt...-hub-port.html

Basically a usb port is shorting out for whatever reason. Being a laptop, this is bad as it is all integrated together and individual parts usually can't be replaced. The good news is chances are not all the usb ports are broken. The guy has you disable them all and enable them one at a time so you can still use whatever works.

    Good luck

    Good luck
Thanks. It acts like a short. There are two ports, I'll be thrilled if one is okay.

Is your laptop still under warranty?
    No.

I'm hoping to save it, it's only a couple of years old and it fits my needs perfectly.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the help. I'm going to try it all today. Send good Geek Zone vibes my way,

The other way to go about this is to try a powered external USB hub. If what's failing is the power circuitry, that will still allow the port to work just for signaling, while the HUB will power the device.

Thanks. I'm hoping to be able to try everything you all have recommended this afternoon.

Again, I really appreciate the help. I talked to the guy that's helped me with other issues and he can't even look at it this week. He wasn't even swayed when I pleaded 'It's the Playoffs!'. I need a laptop guy that's a basketball fan.

    It's an HP Compaq nx6110.

It was given to me last summer, it was pretty much perfect when I got it. I'm not sure exactly how old it is. The only problem I've had is having to re-solder the DC jack for the power cable.

It's been great for me, it's fast and does what I need it to do. I really can't replace it, I hope I can get the mouse working.

Not looking good. Got the touch pad activated, the second I touched the pad everything froze.

It wouldn't boot up the first couple of times I tried.

Can't do anything without a mouse to do it with. Plus, the 'usb power limit' message came up immediatly.

    Temp fix............
Go to Algen's or call radio shack tell them you need an adapter to change the standard mouse 6 pin connect type mouse to serial mouse. then just use the serial port that you see in this picture.

And did you ever have problems with the mouse on the touch pad before?

Did you try the external powered USB hub? You should be able to get one, try it and if it doesn't work, return it. Make sure it's external powered (ie:the hub comes with a little power supply and you need to plug it to AC)

Someone needs to get duncan228 back into commission. I don't even remember where to go anymore to find Spurs articles. I'm used to the Spurs forum having everything.

    Update:

Can't get it to boot up to try anything.

My guy will replace the motherboard for $235. complete.

I'm debating buying a new one. I'd hate to sink more $ into it and have something else go.

I'll try to boot it up again, in case I can test it, or try the external powered hub, or temp fix it.

Thanks for staying on it guys. I appreciate all the ideas. I really can't afford to buy another one, but I have to have one.

I need to do something fast, I'm not doing well without it.

    I'll keep you posted.
