Economy wins again
linkAs teams cut costs, the advanced scout for future opponents appears to be a casualty. The Spurs and Nets plan to go without full-time advance scouts next season. …
Advanced scouts are overrated anyway. Just watch the team you are about to play on TV like the rest of us.
and the domestic scout. Not to mention that it's lame that you can't even get a Spurs license plate in Texas.
anyone with DirecTV and a Tivo and a basketball IQ and a real hard on for wanting to work for an NBA team just to say they work for one can be an advance scout.
Why not save money and just read Spurstalk?
I think the advanced scout is there less to watch the game (video is readily available as stated above)
It's much more the chance to watch the bench, keep track of what signals are used to call which plays, and get a feel for the interactions between teammates. There are a few things you can pick up live that the tv broadcast doesn't show.
That being said, I can understand why this is one of the first positions to go. It's hard to prep for a new opponent every other night in the regular season anyways. Prep work pays off much more in the playoffs.
The film sessions will be replaced by Tim telling the team what their opponents do when he plays against them in NBA Live.
I am a scout for football and it is very important to scout in person you pick much more than you do in video. signals, play calling, even some slight injuries,etc.....
Has The Onion picked this up yet?!
I am sure Tim knows what games to avoid.
As Basketball becomes an ever more popular sport, more and more young people will play basketball, The talent pool will increase as every year goes by. There will be plenty of talent to go around in a few more years...
Let the college people do all the scouting work
The Spurs can spend millions of dollars on freezing some ice so a team no one cares about can practice but they can't spend a few hundred grand to *gasp* try to win basketball games?
Lame![]()
Maybe they should get one of these:

They had to do it; there's no Scola to give away this summer.
