Iran says Neda may have been target of terrorists

TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- Iran said the gunman who killed Neda Agha-Soltan may have mistaken her for the sister of an Iranian "terrorist," the Islamic Republic News Agency reported Wednesday.

In death, Neda Agha-Soltan has emerged as a powerful symbol of opposition to the Iranian government.

Iran blamed the death of the woman known to the world simply as Neda squarely on "those groups who want to create division in the nation," saying they planned the woman's killing "to accuse the Islamic republic of ruthlessly dealing with the opposition," according to IRNA, Iran's state-run news agency.
The report said the investigation into her death is ongoing, "but according to the evidence so far, it could be said that she was killed by mistake. The marksmen had mistaken her for the sister of one of the Monafeghin who had been executed in the province of Mazandaran some time ago."

Yeah, sure, Iran. I'm sure this woman was targetted by a 'terrorist group' that made a mistake, and was in no way a mindless death caused by overreactive Basji military.

Nice try, trying to take the blame off yourselves, but I don't think many will buy it.

What's next? "Neda may have been a terrorist herself, so we should cheer her death!" Honestly, I half-expect it. Iran's government is pretty stupid, IMHO, if they think the people will believe this.

you know. something kinda "bothered" me about this. and i haven't seen the video since the day i saw it. probably the day that she got killed. it was a phonecam video, i'm assuming by the quality, that seemed to be zeroing in on neda for a bit of time. it was shot from behind her. it was a mass of people and it seem to keep her in the shot on purpose. i can't comment if it was taken from the same phonecam vid that showed her dying. i need to look it up. i believe i saw it on cnn.

Yes... this ranks up there with all those "protestors" on Iranian TV saying that it was watching the BBC that made them revolt.
