We're now hearing that the Mavericks have indeed made an offer to Marcin Gortat and the only hangup will be if the Magic decides to match the offer.

Barring that, the next center of the Mavericks appears headed this way.

This would represent the first domino in the Mavericks' summer makeover and probably would be a good move in helping sway Jason Kidd's return.

    http://mavsblog.dallasnews.com/archi...or-gortat.html

In free agency, you never know for sure where you stand until you get an agreement in principle and, eventually, signatures on the dotted line.

But indications are that the Mavericks have bolted to the lead in the Marcin Gortat derby, if there ever was such a thing.

Gortat is the 6-11, unrestricted free-agent center who played for Orlando the last two seasons. He averaged 3.3 points and 3.2 rebounds in the playoffs while playing behind Dwight Howard.

But in the one game he started against Philadelphia when Howard was suspended, Gortat had 11 points and 15 rebounds in 40 minutes.

The native of Poland has become one of the hottest free agents in the league with Houston and San Antonio also hot for him.

The Mavericks aren't saying anything about whether they are on the brink of an agreement with Gortat. He likely would cost the entire mid-level exception (about $5.5 million for the first year). If that were stretched out five years, the deal would be worth more than $30 million.

Sounds like a lot, until you realize Gortat is only 24 and that the total money would be less than half of what they paid Erick Dampier, who is in the last year of his deal.

The interesting aspect, if the Mavericks do corral Gortat, is that it would mean they could trade Dampier as part of a package, perhaps with Jerry Stackhouse, and they still would have the center position accounted for.

If the Mavs offer Gortat the full MLE, shoot me.....This would be another Diop signing.....not as bad but Gortat is worth nothing near the MLE. If Mavs give him the full MLE the NBA should never allow the Mavs to have access to the mid-level ever again

Gortat is going to be the next Jerome James....at least James put up big #'s against the Spurs back in the 2005 playoffs. Gortat is a nice backup big and nothing more.

The Mavs Brain Trust are @$#$@# Morons!!!!

looks like the mavs were the ones who offered full mle and it looks like the rockets won't be getting gortat if this is true.

Hey, paying Gortat the MLE is much, much better than paying Damp 11M. So you get the same production for less, then you can trade for a nice player with Stack and Damps contracts and be much better off.

damps is still a serviceable big whether starter or backup is nice at the correct price of 3m-MLE imo....

I don't mind Gortat for the MLE so much I guess. The onus is still on Dallas to turn Stack/Damp into something much better.

If we don't make a real move, we might not even make the playoffs. I'm talking about we need to bring in some real players and a real center, not give the whole MLE to a decent backup. The previous Davis/Kaman trade would have been much better than signing Gortat and turning Dampier/Stack into a borderline nba starter. I'm preparing for the worst

think of it this way, the Donnie and Mark are pretty much forced to move Damp and Stack now.

Ya I agree. If the Mavs turn Damp/Stack into a good trade, then they will be better.

He looked good for Orlando in the playoffs. It may be a case of him being buried behind Howard, or he's a contract year ho. It's very hard to gauge. He's only 25 and he's never really had a lot of PT.

I wonder if the Jazz would do Boozer/salary filler for Damp/Stack. They can buy Stack out immediately and save $7 million. I'm sure for one year they would rather pay Boozer $10 million than Dampier, even with all of Boozer's issues and effect on team chemistry. But they're going to be in lux tax territory should they decide to match offer sheets to Millsap. I'd rather have Boozer for next year than Dampier, but they can buy Stack out for $7 million and that eases the luxury tax sting a little bit.

And from Dallas' perspective, I'll take one year of Boozer, especially if he's playing for another contract.

Not sure, but they have big expirings and can probably wait until the trade deadline to see which teams are desperate to dump players unless a no brainer comes along. I could see them dealing for Bosh, but they would have to give up Howard imo.

a player who plays like 6 minutes a game in his nba career is worth 5.5 million a year.

Gortat isn't worth the full MLE. We need to work miracles and get BARGAINS not get screwed over if were going to turn this ship around. We're alot of talent away from being contenders again and Gortat barely puts a dent in that.

In fact, is Gortat even worth half the MLE?

He looked pretty good at times, but we're talking about a guy that put up 3ppg, 3rpg, and +6 efficiency rating for the FULL MLE that's crazy talk.

I would approach giving him the full MLE with caution, but I bet his #s look pretty good extrapolated out to 25-30 minutes per game. How much burn are you going to get behind Superman?
